European Maritime Day - Renewable marine energy and infrastructures Julien D Hollander Monday 21 May 2012 Gothenburg, Västra Götaland, Sweden 1

Agenda 1. Elia in a nutshell 2. European challenges 3. Elia cases 2

The Elia Group A solid and experienced partner The Elia Group has an extensive expertise in Grid Development, Production integration, asset management and Grid operation. But also in Market Mechanism, regulation, Unbundling, Risk Management The Elia Group has already provided its expertise to worldwide customers including Europe, Middle East and North Africa as well as the USA. 3

Elia+50Hertz creates a TOP 5 TSO in Europe 110 to 380 kv lines & cables 13,391km 30 to 70 kv lines & cables 4,768km Number of substations 872 Area covered (km 2 ) c.143,000 Direct customers c.130 Residents covered >29 million Employees (FTE) c.1,800 Regulated Asset Base (RAB) 5,300m Top 5 position gives Elia the critical mass to play a leading role in the reshaping of the electricity market 4

Agenda 1. Elia in a nutshell 2. European challenges 3. Elia cases 5

European Challenges Renewable Energy Sources From the objectives towards the 2050 Energy Roadmap The decarbonization proposals will lead to more than 50% share of RES; Onshore and Offshore RES will be required ; A RES energy mix will be necessary ; Europe could pave the way towards innovation and development of new RES offshore technology. Source : EC Energy Roadmap

RES are growing fast. leading to important changes total PV wind 1. Large flows all over Europe 2. Thousand From a few small large local generation units units 7

RES are growing fast. leading to important changes Entsoe 10 year Development Plan RES integration is the major challenge for the grid development in the coming decade 80% of the projects (total km) contribute to RES integration Transmission grid development at the European level is required for about 125 GW of new RES (half of the expected 220GW) Source : Entsoe 10 year Development Plan 8

Current & Upcoming challenges Necessity for long term vision adequacy Technological challenges Need for standardization to move forward (e.g. for HVDC); Need for network innovations (e.g. HVDC breaker technology, storage ); Supply chain adapted to the increasing demand; Regulatory challenges Regulatory framework and remuneration based on Business as Usual activity are evolving. Long term stable model required; National subsidies schemes need to be compatible with functioning of internal market; Grid challenges Time frame for permitting and authorisation is often too long/insecure; 9

Current & Upcoming challenges Necessity for long term vision adequacy Grid challenges Harmonisation of grid code requirements for wind power; Lack of storage facilities for variable renewable production/lack of incentives for cross-border investments; Ensure the security of supply for these variable energy resources; Financial challenges How will the generation mix really evolve? Need for stability as long term investments How to finance all the required network upgrades and new offshore networks? How will the cost be shared between the different stakeholders How to deal with anticipatory investments (onshore and offshore)? 10

Agenda 1. Elia in a nutshell 2. European challenges 3. Elia concrete cases 11

Atlantic Wind Connection So called Google Cable First HVDC offshore-grid in the world Offshore US East Coast up to 7000 MW wind production 2000 MW interconnector for 4 states Participation: Eurogrid International (10%) Engineering : act as principal counsel Partners: Google, Marubeni, Good Energies and Atlantic Grid Developers 12,59% ROE approved by US 12

Elia s off-shore in North Sea Project aiming at integrating 2.000MW from offshore wind farms, including a potential Plug@see for the future European supergrid 13

Elia s off-shore in Baltic Sea Off the Baltic Sea coast, a total generating capacity of more than 3.500MW is planned. 14
