UNIDO-ICHET ICHET United Nations Industrial Development Organization International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies by John W. Sheffield International Seminar on the Hydrogen Economy for Sustainable Development Session III Panel Discussion on Perspectives for a Hydrogen Economy 28 September 2006
Outline Energy Picture in Developing Countries UNIDO - Background UNIDO-ICHET - Background - Pilot Projects
Energy Picture in Developing Countries Countries like India, China and Brazil are now among the fastest growing economies in the world. Energy consumption in such countries is likely to increase much more rapidly as compared to the developed countries in the near future. India Real GDP Up 9.9% in 06 China Real GDP Up 9.9% in 06 Brazil Real GDP Up 3.5% in 06 China s increase in oil consumption equals 38% of the world s total growth in 2006
Rapid Increase in Consumption in India
Rapid Increase in Consumption in China
Rapid Increase in Production in Brazil
Energy Picture in Developing Countries Large scale use of indigenously produced hydrogen can play a major role in achieving energy security, reducing the import of fossil fuels, improving the quality of life in rural areas and also reducing the urban air pollution.
Major Challenges Hydrogen and fuel cells technologies demand a conscious effort to build domestic capabilities New wave technologies are characterized by their science base, patent intensity and embeddedness in other technologies. These factors pose relatively high entry barriers for most developing countries. Hydrogen Fuel Cells & Alternatives in the Transportation Sector: Issues for Developing Counties November 7-9, 2005 Maastricht, Netherlands
Benefits for Developing Countries Thorough expertise is required to evaluate alternatives and plan transport transitions Among other emerging technologies, what is the role of Fuel Cells & Hydrogen and what knowledge is needed in regard to technological research, education, industrial planning, and long term infrastructure investments? Hydrogen Fuel Cells & Alternatives in the Transportation Sector: Issues for Developing Counties November 7-9, 2005 Maastricht, Netherlands
Benefits for Developing Countries Eventually, impacts on health and environment can be lessened by the use of this technology Transportation is responsible for growing pollution in developing countries. On the middle or long term Fuel Cells and Hydrogen technologies might be a way to deal with air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen Fuel Cells & Alternatives in the Transportation Sector: Issues for Developing Counties November 7-9, 2005 Maastricht, Netherlands
Benefits for UNIDO's History Developing Countries Eventually, impacts on health and environment can be lessened UNIDO was by set the up use in of 1966 this and technology became a specialized agency of the United Nations Transportation in As is part responsible of the United for Nations growing common pollution in developing system, countries. UNIDO has On responsibility the middle or for long promoting term Fuel Cells and industrialization Hydrogen technologies throughout might the developing be a way to deal with air world, pollution in cooperation and greenhouse with its gas Member emissions. States. Hydrogen Fuel Cells & Alternatives in the Transportation Sector: Issues for Developing Counties November 7-9, 2005 Maastricht, Netherlands
UNIDO-ICHET - ITC UNIDO is the United Nation s agency implementing International Technology Centres. ITCs are a unique tool to promote international collaboration. They effectively transfer and diffuse technological knowledge and innovations and build up technology partnerships, thus encouraging industrial investments in the area of new technologies. The International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies is a UNIDO ITC located in Istanbul. Its mission is to help convert the World Economy to the Hydrogen Energy System. TURKEY
UNIDO-ICHET 1988 : Proposed establishment of the Centre 1992 : Turkey offers to host the Centre 1996 : UNIDO General Assembly approves 2003 : Trust Fund Agreement is signed 2004 : Commenced operation 2006 : Proposed UN Summit on hydrogen energy
PILOT PROJECTS UNIDO-ICHET's activities are focused on promoting the development, acceptance and use of hydrogen technologies by demonstrating the viability & applicability through pilot projects
PILOT PROJECTS South Korea Hydrogen fuel cell buses and cars UNIDO-ICHET's activities are focused on Portugal Hydrogen production via renewable energy Turkey Hydrogen bus project promoting the development, acceptance and use of hydrogen technologies by demonstrating the China Hydrogen production via small hydro power viability & applicability through pilot projects Libya Hydrogen production via solar energy Argentina Hydrogen production via wind energy India Hydrogen fueled tri-wheel transporters
Bozca Wind Hydrogen Project PILOT PROJECTS A large-scale wind-hydrogen energy system designed to meet all energy demands of 3000 residents living in Bozca Island, Turkey. TURKEY Bozca Island Hydrogen Economy for Sustainable Development
A Perfect Site for the Project Bozca Island already has a windfarm consisting of seventeen 600kW Enercon turbines. Yearly production is close to 40 GWh. TURKEY Bozca Island Bozca Island Wind Hydrogen Project
Conclusions Transition to hydrogen economy has already begun! Role of UNIDO-ICHET will include: serving as a bridge between the activities of industrialized and developing countries serving as a bridge between R&D and practical applications UNIDO-ICHET will focus on stimulating appropriate applications of the hydrogen energy technologies UNIDO-ICHET Pilot Projects will demonstrate the viability of the hydrogen energy system
