Faith and Charleigh demonstrating water testing to a group of future environmentalist PROJECT SPOTLIGHT We are proud to say that the Confederacy of Mainland Mi kmaq (CMM) has been helping us grow one summer at a time, for a new years now! This season particularly, CMM hosted a total of interns; whom have been given the opportunity to learn about everything from the diminishing population of Black Ash, to specifics of water quality monitoring, climate change and action, and even entering in to the whelm of community engagement and youth education. THE HOST The Confederacy of Mainland Mi kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing seven, Mi kmaq communities of mainland NS. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi kmaq communities initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community. The CMM is located in the Millbrook Mi kmaw Community in Nova Scotia and has over 50 Employees.

4 THE HOST Based in Tatamagouche, the North Colchester River Restoration Association (NCRAA) aims to work cooperatively to improve river water quality for human use and native flora and fauna by means of proven river enhancement techniques. The NCRAA recognizes water as one of our most important resources and understands the contribution of riparian areas in protecting this resource. Thus, the primary objective of the NCRAA is to enhance the quality of our water resources and fish habitat through the restoration of rivers and their tributaries while promoting riparian health in North Colchester. PROJECT SPOTLIGHT Working alongside the NCRRA, Justin has been mainly responsible for collaborating with a team of 3 other daily stream workers to implement structures and prioritize rehabilitation activities that promote fish habitat improvement, bank stabilization to counteract erosion, tree planting and maintenance, infrastructure maintenance, on top of education/demonstration. 5 THE HOST The Hope for Wildlife Society is an environmentally conscious organization whose mission is to connecting people to wildlife in a positive way through knowledge and understanding, The Hope for Wildlife Society believes that public education through the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured and orphaned wildlife is key to a sustainable future PROJECT SPOTLIGHT As Wildlife Rangers for the Hope for Wildlife Society, 9 week summer interns Amy Pascher and Victoria Hue have been exactly where they belong! Having volunteered at the society for a number of years preciously, the pair have an innate love and appreciation for animals and a persistent drive to help them in any way possible. Amy and Victoria are mainly responsible for the continuous care, handling, and maintenance of the society s wildlife education animals, and providing public talks and tours that emphasize wildlife conservancy and the importance of staying informed when it comes to dealing with any and every wild creature. One of the many fortunate inhabitants of the centre

6 PROJECT SPOTLIGHT While working with Glooscap First Nation this summer, Leadership intern Clay Gaudet and his 9 week partner Cole Liard have gained a spectrum of new skills and knowledge. The pair have principally been focusing on engaging and teaching community members about the importance of waste management and sustainable living. Clay and Cole have been tackling the task of making enough of an impression though research and delivery of information, in order to help others intergrate these things into everyday life. THE HOST Glooscap First Nation Band Council is a not for profit Band Council established under the Indian Act. The mandate is to provide programs and services to members of Glooscap First Nation including but not limited to: the administration of the Band, social assistance services, education, native employment, and health services and programming. Glooscap First Nation is a small but growing First Nation Community located outside of Hantsport Nova Scotia. We like to keep our community members involved in the betterment of the place they call home. One of the beautiful Clean branded gardens that Cole and Clay built

7 PROJECT SPOTLIGHT This summer, Frank Johnson has been tackling the task of finding the best way to teach youth about the natural environment, rehabilitation, and overall appreciation; while all the while making it fun to do so! Frank has helped to structure, plan, and then physically implement a four week, outdoor based day camp for youth in grades 6 9. Frank brainstormed the best games and activities that support learning and develops awareness of the world around us all, and emphasizes the teachings of how to work and live in harmony with the local environment. THE HOST The Resource Opportunities Centre is a volunteer community development organization serving the Prospect Communities. We are the operators of the Prospect Road Community Centre, and our mission is to build a welcoming, innovative, thriving community. We are dedicated to sustainability and providing recreational, educational, social, cultural and technology-related opportunities.

8 PROJECT SPOTLIGHT Heather Mills has been spending the past 4 months making an impact on changing the mentalities of the younger generation to emphasize the importance of reducing waste and overall carbon footprint. Heather has been leading a team of student interns, instructing and assisting them in delivering information sessions, workshops, & activities that encourages all residents to Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle household waste. THE HOST Pictou Landing First Nation is a small, Mi kmaq community located along the Northumberland Strait about 20 minutes outside the Town of Trenton in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Fishing is the main industry and also has an elementary school, church, gas bar, Health Center and the Band Administration Office which administers core programs and services in Health, Education, Capital, Infrastructure, Housing, Economic Development and Employment/Training. Pictou Landing First Nation has an onreserve population of over 500 members with Youth making up over 40%.

9 THE HOST Hants North Recreation and Development Association is a non-profit organization with the mandate to enhance and promote recreation and physical activity in the community by developing the grounds and property of the Hants North Baseball Association Property located at 55 Findley Road, Kennetcook, Hants County, Nova Scotia PROJECT SPOTLIGHT Chase Brown has been focusing his summer on conducting trail development and maintenance activities in the Hants North/ Noel region, as well as participating in planting trees, shrubs and other plants, and general grounds maintenance. During his time he successfully completed work on a 900 meter walking trail that will be enjoyed by many people from the community. It was a beautiful day for a visit to the Hants North Recreation Centre

10 David Okaley demonstrating the effects of adding chloride to the Fenton reaction PROJECT SPOTLIGHT In this position, David Oakley s summer has been jam packed with experimentation, evaluation, and a whole lot of motivation to achieve results. Oakley has been responsible for helping develop and evaluate, novel nanomaterials for the treatment of various types of contaminated waters. The successful candidate needs to have a background in the environmental sciences, biology or chemistry, a high level of enthusiasm, and a strong interest in developing green technologies for water treatment. Haley Armstrong (from newsletter #2) and her 9 week research assistant, James McNeil have been researching mine water redemption under the same roof! THE HOST The Verschuren Centre for Sustainability in Energy & the Environment is located within Cape Breton University, in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The center s mandate is to address

11 PROJECT SPOTLIGHT The past few months for Anastasia and Mackenzy have revolved around monitoring species at risk and their habitats, protecting them, researching more about them through field surveys, research reading, and speaking with community. Each in their home community (Anastasia in Bear River and Makenzie in Wildcat), both interns have been creating community and youth awareness events or programs, and reaching out the public for support and collaboration. Mackenzie and Anastasia have gained experience tracking, monitoring, and rehabilitating habitats for the Eastern Ribbonsnake; Blandings Turtle, Wood Turtle, rare plants, Chimney Swifts, bats, Monarch Butterflies, Common Nighthawks, and Black Ash; though each intern has had a unique focus within this broad group. Anastasia s work has enhanced butterfly gardens and other species nest boxes or habitat areas; and provided habitat information and protection signs for nature trails in order to advise the community of endangered, invasive, or sensitive species in the area. Mackenzie and her supervisor Sarah Jeremyontheotherhand,havehyperfocused on the Eastern Ribbon Snake, with impressive results! The pair have actually been highlighted by CBC news for their efforts in saing the snake and its habitat in Nova Scotia (click below for link!) THE HOST The host for these Youth Corps summer positions is Bear River First Nation and Acadia First Nation. The successful intern will be reporting to Shalan Joudry and Sarah Jermey.

12 Clean Foundation and the Government of Nova Scotia are thrilled to announce the official rebranding of the formerly Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps as the Clean Leadership Program. Clean is constantly striving to innovate our programming, ensuring its relevant to our partners and participants while meeting market needs. To continue this growth and success, the Clean Leadership Program is now offering Full time internships! This stream (6 to 12 months), proudly funded through Environment and Climate Change Canada s Science Horizons Program, is a wage subsidy initiative to help recent graduates (up to 3 years) acquire work experience in STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) positions with an environmental focus. The program provides up to a maximum of $15,000 in wage subsidies to help employers hire the talent they need and help increase the supply of highly qualified scientific and technical professionals in the environmental sector. The end goal of the program is for the intern to be hired on full time or decide to return to academia to further their studies in the STEM field.
