MN Department of Transportation Maintains approximately 4,800 bridges.
Bridge Demolition History 2002 Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) notified MnDOT bridges needed to be assessed for asbestos and other regulated materials prior to demolition. WisDOT was notified at approx. the same time.
MnDOT Approved Companies Assessment and Oversight Asbestos Abatement Regulated Waste Removal

What is asbestos? Asbestos is the name for a group of minerals that occur naturally in the ground. Three types of asbestos were commonly used to manufacture products Chrysotile CRY-so-tile Amosite AM-o-site Crocidolite crow-sid-o-lite
Chrysotile white asbestos wavy, flexible white fibers 90 to 95 percent of the asbestos used in the U.S. From MDH
Amosite brown asbestos straight, light gray or brown fibers. From MDH
Crocidolite blue asbestos straight blue fibers. From MDH
From MDH Where does asbestos come from? Open mine pit Mirny Diamond Mine, Russia
Leading producers of asbestos Russia, China, Brazil, and Kazakhstan.
Asbestos Containing Materials US production World production World trade
Asbestos Diseases Asbestosis scarring of the lung tissue This leads to inadequate oxygen intake to the blood latency period of 15 to 30 years Mesothelioma cancer of the pleural lining almost always fatal latency period of 30 to 40 years Lung Cancer tumor of the bronchi covering latency period of 20 to 30 years
Prior to demolition/rehabilitation Bridges must be assessed for asbestos and other regulated material/waste. For MnDOT, this is done a minimum of a year prior to letting
