10 2 Introduction 2.1 Wind Power, Technology Definition Wind energy is the conversion of wind flow into a useful form of energy such as power production through turbines, water pumping and windmills for mechanical energy. Wind power is an alternative source of power, generated from the flow of the earth s air currents through a wind turbine. A wind turbine gathers kinetic energy and converts it into electricity for residential, commercial and industrial purposes. Wind power is a clean source of energy as it does not emit carbon. It is classified as either onshore or offshore. Onshore wind is the market segment for wind turbines erected on land, and offshore wind is the market segment for wind turbines erected in the sea or ocean. 2.2 Wind Turbine Components, Overview A wind turbine extracts kinetic energy from wind flow and converts it into electricity. The technology uses an aerodynamic rotor to generate electricity, which is connected by a transmission system to an electric generator. The turbine consists of a foundation, a tower, a nacelle and a rotor. The nacelle contains large primary components such as the main axle, gearbox, generator and transformer and control system as represented in figure five. The rotor is made of the blades and the hub, which holds them in position as they turn. Most wind turbines have three rotor blades. Tubular towers supporting the nacelle and rotor are usually made of steel and are tapered from the base to the top. The nacelle and rotor are designed to move round, or yaw, to face the prevailing wind. A wind turbine consists of the following basic components: Rotor: the rotor is one of the visible parts of the wind power system, consisting of blades and a shaft. The material used for the blades is usually fiberglass, metal, glass reinforced polypropylene, reinforced plastic, reinforced nylon or wood. The diameter of the rotor determines the amount of power that the turbine will produce, as it defines the quantity of wind that will be intercepted. Blades are pitched out of the wind to stop the rotor from rotating when the wind speed is too high or too low to produce electricity. Generator: the generator consists of rotated coils of wire, which produce a magnetic field and are used to convert the rotating motion of the turbine blades into electricity. The generator produces Direct Current (DC) or Alternate Current (AC), and is available for a large range of output ratings. The types of generators normally used are gearless/brushless permanent magnet generators. Permanent magnet generators are becoming increasingly popular, as they eliminate the need for field windings. Nacelle: a nacelle is a removable casing used to protect the gearbox, generator and other components. Yaw System (tail vane): a yaw system is used to align the wind turbine with the wind. Most small wind systems use a simple tail vane, which directs the rotor into the wind. Special release mechanisms can use the yaw system to turn off the turbine in the case of very high winds. Turbine tower: the turbine tower holds the turbine in the path of the wind. As wind speed increases and wind turbulence decreases with height, higher towers help to increase the capacity factor. The towers should be constructed so as to withstand lightning strikes, ice storms and extreme winds. There are two types of towers used for small wind; guyed and self-supporting. Guyed towers are the least expensive and most easy to install, and can be constructed from lattice sections, pipes and supporting wires. Although they are the most common systems used for home installations, sufficient space is required in which to accommodate them. Self-supporting towers are usually lattice or cylindrical in shape and are generally used for turbines in the XX kilowatt (kw) range. They are stronger than the guyed towers but are also expensive for single home turbines. Control and protection systems: the sophistication of the control system is dependent upon the application of the wind turbine. This can vary from simple switches and fuses to computerized mechanisms for the control of the yaw systems and brakes. The brake system used varies from the manual switching of electric breaks in the regulator to microprocessor-based smart internal regulators with peak power tracking. Page 11
