EPRI Mission and Membership 450+ participants in more than 30 countries with international members comprising 25% of research funding EPRI members generate approximately 90% of the electricity in the US 2
What is an Advanced Energy Community Advanced Energy Communities (AEC)...customer centric demonstrations that integrate multiple customer resources such as Energy Efficiency, Demand Response, Customer storage, PV (or other local generation), electrification and electric vehicles in an electrically contiguous area to achieve larger utility and societal goals such as decarbonization, grid hardening and grid support while enabling customer comfort, convenience and cost benefits 3
Ongoing examples of Advanced Energy Communities ZNE new home community Minnesota: ZNE Farm Distribution impacts Morris UMN Towerside Ford Site Rice Creek Commons Destination Medical Center Medical Campus Microgrid Upper Harbor Terminal University Campus Microgrid IDSM low income multifamily retrofit Buildings Grid ZNE neighborhood ZNE multifamily distribution integration Targeted DERs for distribution balancing Smart Energy Microgrid Neighborhood 4
The concept of Network Efficiency Traditional EE has been asked to do two related functions: Avoid generation capacity (ratepayer benefit) Reduce customer cost The future is based on network efficiency Eat your Energy Efficiency vegetables before your DER desserts 5
Why focus on network efficiency? Hourly Energy Use Net Demand for Zero Net Energy home Supply Demand imbalance happens through the network ISO Demand Curve 6
Decarbonization will continue to drive energy efficiency 2012 Science Paper: The Technology Path to Deep Greenhouse Gas Emissions Cuts by 2050 (From E3, San Francisco) 7
Energy related emissions (44% zero GHG generation) Energy use GHG emissions for a new home Mixed Fuel All Electric Analysis based on hourly energy use of home and hourly emissions using genration source data from CAISO 8
Intelligent efficiency is no longer static but dynamic Smart Thermostat Solar & Storage Controllable Loads Smart Heat Pump Water Heater Combining Intelligent efficiency with electrification, controllable loads, local generation and storage 9
Alabama Power Smart Energy Neighborhood A 62 home Smart Home Community - With Smart appliances, HEMS, 2x6 walls A full scale microgrid with 300 kw solar and storage (size TBD) Dedicated distribution line to neighborhood 10
Example: Grid Integration of ZNE neighborhoods Production builder ZNE neighborhood First time buyers Net cost w/o PV less than $1,000 per home EE measures reduced PV size from 6.4 to 4 kw 9 Homes w/ monitoring & control of solar, loads and storage 11 Homes w/ monitoring & control of solar and loads (w/o storage) 11
How efficiency impacts electric service planning Single home load shape Transformer load shape Transformer 1 Transformer 2 Lateral Load Block Feeder # Homes ,000 Typical Rating (KVA) ,500 10,000 Scenario #1 % Nameplate 147% 228% 194% 188% 137% Scenario #2 % Nameplate 117% 127% 104% 101% 77% Difference Between #1 & #2 30% 101% 90% 87% 60% 12
Example use cases for AEC results IDSM Use Cases Modeled vs. measured building energy use performance Customer acceptance of utility energy management services Electrification of building energy systems and impact on emissions Control systems for aggregation of customer owned resources Energy management for energy cost and rate optimization Usage patterns for electric vehicles and other customer systems Measurement of building capacitance for grid services Grid Management Use Cases Community scale distribution impacts Demand management technologies for distribution Microgrid technology and benefits Load aggregation for ISO benefits Recommendations for distribution planning practices Utility Services Use Cases Smart Home services and Advanced User Experience Understanding customer preferences for DERs Enabling utility IDSM programs through services and targeting 13
