Bio Reactors as a Cost Effective Solution to Reclaim Water Elutriate Systems Glenn Wensloff Sustainable AG EXPO 2014

Various types of Treatment Systems Leach Fields/Septic Systems Ponds Ponds with floating aerators Ponds with fine bubble diffuser Bio Reactors

My professional goal to the wine industry I feel that winery process water can be utilized as an valuable asset versus an industrial liability I strive for a perspective shift where winery wastewater can be viewed as a useful byproduct, an asset to return to the land compost tea.

Objective - to review the strengths and weaknesses of various wastewater systems. Septic systems/fields: cheap, but fail easily due to overloading. Almost outdated, little BOD digestion, good distribution. Ponds: Fail easily due to overloading, odors, acres in size Ponds with aeration: (Facultative) Fail with overloading, odors acres in size Bio Reactors: Modular, small footprint efficient

Background what are the issues BOD: Biological oxygen demand TSS: Total suspended Solids TDS: Total dissolved Solids DO: Dissolved Oxygen ph Wineries during crush: ph = 4.5» Water ph 7.0» Sanitizers, caustic cleaners: ph 10

BOD Winery Wastewater, Digestion High BOD from Dissolved Sugars, Alcohol, Carbohydrates Anaerobic, without oxygen, leech fields, under aerated ponds, odors. Aerobic with Oxygen, rapid BOD reduction, no odors

Wineries Wastewater System Requirements Quality Winery Wastewater System Expandable A cost effective means to reduce the high BOD effluent. Small in size, footprint Expandable with increased production Maintenance Cost & Time Durable

Soda Rock Winery, Healdsburg

Winery Wastewater Systems Sump Pump(s) Screening System; Rotary Drum, Parabolic, Bar Screen Flow meter, magnetic ph Control, proportional Feed BOD reduction, leach field, pond or Bio Reactor Water disposal, irrigation vineyards, reuse on lawns, landscaping, leach fields

Screening Systems Parabolic, simple, cheap, needs cleaning Rotary Drum, cost more, self cleaning Bar Screen, Cost more, reduces a pumping operation

Bar Screen

Parabolic Screen

Rotary Screen Hahns Estate

ph Control System Proportional Feed, closer to set point pumps slow down, automatically. Wineries require both acid and caustic addition Caustic, NaOH, KOH, CaOH Acid, Phosphoric, Citrus, Sulfuric

ph control System Delicato Winery, King City

Hahns Estate Pond 1

Facultative Ponding System BOD Reduction occurs mainly in the Aerobic Zone Sludge Digestion occurs mainly in the Anaerobic Zone

Pros and Cons about Ponding Systems Pro; Simple & Passive Cons; Large Inefficient Aeration Odors, smelly Large Volume to aerate Beneficial microbes fill the bottom

How to get more from your Pond Add Screening Add ph control Add dissolved oxygen control Add rotary Blowers and Fine Bubble diffusers Minimize the Anaerobic Zone on the first pond Add a Bio Reactor upstream of the pond Add Bio Bugs, B560 from Bio Systems (800) (ask for the winery special)

Pond Modification; converting a facultative pond into an aerobic digester

Aerobic Digester Hahns Estate

Bio Reactors Well established technology, utilized by most sewer plants Rapid BOD digestion Small in size, systems measured in square feet versus acres with ponds Adjustable to meet changing loading rates, crush, bottling, racking and sanitizing Expandable in size to meet increase production.

Bio Reactor Components Retention, tanks or pond Pumping system Screening system Aeration System ph control Clarifier, return activated sludge Dissolved oxygen control Variable frequency drive Distribution, reuse of treated effluent

Bio Reactor P&ID ph CONTROLLER (ph ) CAUSTIC 50%/PHOSPHORIC ACID ANTI FOAM BIO REACTOR TANK 1 W/ AERATION BLOWER (VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE DISSOLVED OXYGEN SENSOR OPTION) BIO REACTOR TANK 2 W/ AERATION TO IRRIGATION WINERY EFFLUENT PARABOLIC SCREEN RETURN ACTIVATED SLUDGE CLARIFIER SOLIDS WINERY EFFLUENT BAR SCREEN (OPTION) TO BIO REACTOR ELUTRIATE SYSTEMS 1398 DEER CANYON RD ARROYO GRANDE, CA 93420

Bio Reactor By Products BOD reduced effluent Compost tea, aerobic bacteria Aerobic bacteria overwhelms the bad bacteria Bad bacteria and nematodes prefer anaerobic conditions Consume bad guys, crowd out, produce antibodies, consume nutrients

Cost Analysis What is the cost of an acre ponding system versus a 100 x 30 Bio Reactor What is the impact of expanding a ponding system versus adding a Bio Reactor upstream to quickly degrade the BOD levels before they enter the pond.

Elutriate Systems Provides a Complete Solution Operation & Training Complete Satisfaction Installation Design Design, Established and Proven Bio Reactor Systems Installation by an Engineering Contractor Operation and Training to optimize the systems performance Complete Satisfaction

Key Benefits of a Bio Reactor Small Foot Print, good for industrial areas Operational flexibility A low cost solution where vineyard acres are costly 5 times better utilization of electricity to provide aeration for BOD digestion Easily expanded for increased production

Automatic ph & VFD Dissolved Oxygen Control

Rotary Screen

Compost Tea Converting a liability high BOD effluent to compost tea The high BOD effluent is utilized as a food source for beneficial bacteria and fungi to grow and propagate. Beneficial as both a soil drench and a foliar spray. Replace beneficial organism killed by pesticides and fungicides. Restore the natural nutrient cycle of the soil. Refer to the experts at

$$$ustainability comes in many Forms and Flavors It is financially sustainable to optimize water usage. Reducing waste water production/usage reduces treatment costs. Just because it has always been done that way, does not mean it is sustainable, smart or even financially feasible.
