Litter Prevention Action Plan Quick start guide
Background 78 million Cost to Scotland of Litter and Flytipping each year THIS INCLUDES EDUCATION ENFORCEMENT CLEAN UP The Burden on the Taxpayer PLUS Indirect costs of Littering and Flytipping on areas like: HEALTH, CRIME WILDLIFE Zero Waste Scotland, on behalf of the Scottish Government has launched a new initiative to address this problem: LITTER PREVENTION ACTION PLANS The plan will provide a set of actions that will help your organisation prevent litter & flytipping The purpose is to get organisations thinking about what actions they can take to reduce litter
What will it involve? Developing an Action Plan is quick and simple You will be assigned a Litter Prevention Mentor to help you develop it You need to select at least six actions you could take to reduce the litter that your organisation, customers or staff may generate POSSIBLE ACTIONS INCLUDE: Sharing litter prevention messages on Twitter Presenting your waste for collection at the correct time Displaying litter prevention messages on your noticeboards and intranet Including litter prevention as part of employee training Providing sufficient litter and recycling bins at your premises Developing a litter cleaning schedule for your organisation frontage, car park, side alleys, delivery and storage areas on a regular basis
What will it involve? (continued) We can send through a list of possible litter prevention actions to start you thinking about what you can do... Once you have developed your litter prevention action plan, you can promote it to as many people as possible, including staff, suppliers and customers You will also have the opportunity to contribute to a Community Level Plan This is an overarching plan covering your local authority area, and will look at opportunities to coordinate activities and maximise the impact of the work being done by all partners
What are the benefits to me? IT IS FREE TO TAKE PART...and you will be supported every step of the way by your Litter Prevention Mentor You will gain a better understanding of how litter impacts on the environment and what you can do to reduce these impacts It provides a great PR opportunity to promote your organisation and it is possible that your organisation could be used as a case study in the national campaign It s an opportunity to work with other organisations and your local community It provides a good opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to the environment to your customers
Who else is taking part? Private Sector Tourism & leisure facilities Retailers Food, drink and hospitality businesses Housing associations & managers Manufacturing & construction Hospitals & healthcare facilities Schools, colleges & universities Who? Any organisation that considers itself to be part of the local community from a local primary school to a major supermarket Local authorities Transport operators Community groups & community councils Public Sector Landowners & managers TSOs NGOs Third Sector For more information:
