2 Leadership and Leader Definition Leadership: It is more than a style or a competency. It is a quality that involves a sum of all the parts: inner self, ability to communicate with others, and individual view of the world (Michael Fleming) Leader: It is a person who can visualize a better world in the future and is able to convince others to join him/her on the journey (Deborah Allen)
3 Competency/Characteristic Competency: It is a combination of attitude, knowledge, and skills Attitude: Learned through ethical and moral beliefs (biological) Knowledge: Learned through awareness by solving problems (culture) Skills: Learned through enhancing the individual ability by doing (environment)
4 Leadership School Levels Level 1: Highly Capable Individual Makes high quality contributions at work, possesses useful levels of knowledge, and has the talent and the skills needed to do a good job. Level 2: Contributing Team Member Uses knowledge and skills to help the team succeed, works effectively, productively, and successfully with other people in the group. Level 3: Competent Manager Able to organize a group effectively to achieve specific goals and objectives. Level 4: Effective Leader Able to galvanize a department or organization to meet performance objectives and achieve a vision. Level 5: Great Leader Has abilities needed for the other four levels and has unique blend of humility.
5 Glossary: Leadership Styles Democratic leadership: Leaders who invite the team to contribute to the decision-making process. People-oriented leadership: Leaders who are focused on organizing, supporting, and developing people in their teams. Task-Oriented leadership: Leaders who are focused on getting the job and the work duties and responsibilities done (autocratic). Transactional leadership: Leaders who expect total obedience by the employees when they join the job.
6 Glossary: Leadership Styles Autocratic leadership: Leaders with absolute power over the subordinates. Bureaucratic leadership: Leaders follow rules rigorously and ensure the staff follows procedures precisely. Charismatic leadership: Leaders who can inspire, move the team with enthusiasm, and energetic in driving others forward. Transformational leadership: True leaders who inspire their teams constantly with a shared vision of the future and look for initiatives which add new value.
