A Call to Serve Sig Berg World Nuclear University - Summer Institute 2009
Importance of Service
What is the essence of life? To serve others and do good -Aristotle
For what will it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? - Jesus
The purpose of life is to serve and to show compassion and the will to help others -Albert Schweitzer
I awoke and saw a life that was service. I acted and behold, service was joy -Rabindranath Tagore
The Servant Leader The servant leader is servant first... It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions. - Robert Greenleaf
Tests Do those served grow as persons? Do they become healthier, wiser, freer, more likely to become servants themselves? What is the effect on the least privileged in society?
The servant leader is a leader focused on serving others
Power Model vs. Servant Model
Grabbing vs. Giving
Practices of Servant Leaders Protects the Core (PTC) Self-awareness Listening Developing colleagues Coaching, not controlling Unleashing the energy and intelligence of others Foresight/Vision Art of persuasion Pursuit of excellence
Why a Servant Leader? Is healthy for us Gives personal meaning to life Brings personal freedom Is transforming
Where to Begin... What needs attention in your personal life? Where are there opportunities for reconciliation Find a place in your organization where you can serve to improve something that needs attention. Where can you serve in your community? How can you serve here at the Summer Institute?

Optional Discussions ( in the Break Room) What is the difference between a successful and a significant life? (7/14) Why is conflict resolution an important part of leadership? (7/15) What are the potential dangers of leadership? Work/ life balance... (7/16) What are some practical applications for the nuclear workplace (7/17)

The real corrupters of society may be, not the corrupt, but those who have held back the righteous leaven, the salt that has Lost its savor, the innocent who have not the moral courage to show what they think of the effrontery of impurity... - John Thom (19th Century)
