Chicago: Moody Press, Course Description This course is designed to help the student understand the biblical, historical, and contemporary principles of effective leadership, to provide insights for leading the church in the 21 st century, and to examine many of the pressing issues facing leaders today. Course Objectives To create a sense of vision and urgency in the student s lives concerning the immediate and pressing need for leaders, especially in the church. To develop more effective leaders in both knowledge and practice. To provide a deeper understanding of one s own leadership gift and how it impacts those being led. To introduce the student s to real leaders who have learned leadership lessons from life. To raise the student s level of creativity and confidence in presenting leadership concepts. Course grading scale A (95-100) A- (92-94) B+ (89-91) B (86-88) B- (83-85) C+ (80-82) C (77-79) C- (74-76) D+ (71-73) D (68-70) D- (65-67) F (0-64)

2 Course Requirements Class attendance and participation 10 points Attendance in class is critical to graduate level learning, therefore it is taken seriously. For every hour of class that a student misses the course grade will be deducted 1 point. A student who misses more than 20% of the class sessions will be assigned the grade FA (failure due to absences). Emergencies will be considered on a case by case basis and additional work may be assigned. Reading and Reading Reviews 30 points (10 points each) Due 10/23, 11/6, 11/20 Chose any three reading assignments on the syllabus and write a critical analysis of the reading from that day. The analysis may take various forms. For example you may Compare and contrast the various authors take on the subject from that day Propose a differing viewpoint from the reading on that day and substantiate your point of view from experience or other sources. Relate a current or past leadership issue that you ve faced that relates to the reading that day. Guidelines 2 pages, typed double-spaced Clearly written and devoid of grammatical and typographical errors Use of 1 st person is acceptable where appropriate (for example if you are writing about personal experience) Oral Presentation 20 points Perform a team building or leadership development initiative/activity with an approved group (youth group, staff, other); make a follow-up application. Teach the approved group about some aspect of leadership using creativity, handouts, visuals; whatever are the best means to communicate your point. Guidelines Be creative Make a clear leadership application Keep your activity or presentation to 30 minutes Research paper 40 points Due December 18 Topic Topic Choose one of the following: Relate the principles and pressures of leadership, taught in class and mentioned in the required reading, to the experiences of a biblical leader.

Research and write about a leadership characteristic or principle in the life of a biblical leader (s). Guidelines The student must demonstrate a considerable grasp on the concepts and processes involved in leadership as well as the practical application of those processes typed pages, double-spaced Appropriate citations (30-50) and bibliography (12-15 sources) Clearly written and devoid of grammatical and typographical errors Note: Any reading review or research paper that is overdue will lose 1 point per day late. 7 Sample Style Sheet for Classes under Dr. North This style sheet is intended to be only a brief statement of some elementary rules for writing papers. All papers must be typed, double-spaced. Paragraphs should be indented at least five spaces. Number all pages; the first page is usually numbered at the center bottom, the others may be numbered at the top of the page, either centered or at the right hand margin. All papers for my classes are considered formal writing and therefore should be free from contractions, abbreviations, and the use of first or second person. Careful attention to sentence structure will avoid the use of sentence fragments. Such as this one. Any quotation that runs more than four lines of text should be set off, indented, and usually single-spaced, as is done with this particular paragraph. Such a quotation uses no quotation marks. All quotations need to be documented. Any omission within a quotation is called an ellipsis and is indicated by three spaced periods... ; four if at the end of a sentence because one period is needed to end the sentence. In regular prose, When quotation marks are used, they should be double ones, not single. Single ones are used for a quotation within a quotation, such as this one. Notice also that quotation marks always follow the period or comma. In a book review it is alright to use parenthetical references such as this one (North, 15). Notice that the period follows the parenthesis. Graduate research papers, however, should use footnotes (undergrads do not need to worry about this). Many students are needlessly afraid of footnotes. Most software programs will do them automatically. The Chicago Style must be used since in the discipline of history APA and MLA style are not considered scholarly forms. Document references in the Chicago style to books 1 and articles 2 in journals are given below. 1 James B.
