2 Certificate of Effective Management and Leadership This Certificate of Effective Management and Leadership program will help you learn how to build and work effectively with teams, communicate effectively with individuals inside and outside your organization, and learn to resolve various types of conflict in the workplace. You will gain practical skills in managing projects while making agile decisions on behalf of your team and organization. SUPERSTAR! PUT YOUR TEAM AND COMPANY FIRST: AN EMPLOYEE S GUIDE TO ADVANCEMENT AND SUCCESS by Dr. Raj Basu March 27, :00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This highly engaging and informative session, peppered with stories and anecdotes, underscores that success and advancement in organizations are largely a function of purposefully engaging in good citizenship behaviors, being good team players, understanding what is important to our bosses, and helping co-workers. While individual performance matters, real superstars focus on others, not just themselves. STORIES FROM THE PAST: MANAGING THE FUTURE by Dr. Lee Manzer April 19, :00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. There has never been a society that did not use the telling of stories to establish its culture. Within organizations, storytelling is also a valuable technique to create and maintain culture while motivating employees. Additionally stories are used to resolve conflict and to generate customer evangelists. How do corporate stories impact culture and therefore the employee? How do stories motivate the individual employee? Can corporate stories be captured and directed? Can managers improve their ability to relate ideas through stories? These and other interesting concepts of storytelling are the focus of this seminar. PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT by Dr. Bryan Edwards May 16, :00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The effective leader knows how to motivate followers with quantitative and qualitative rewards. Although when thinking of rewards we often only think of monetary compensation, recognition can be a very effective motivational tool. In this session, we will discuss rewards and several approaches to motivation including goal setting, reinforcement theory, and equity. We will examine the situations in which each of these approaches is most effective. Participants also will learn how to reward people efficiently and to help employees motivate themselves. ACHIEVING INCLUSION AMIDST UNCONSCIOUS BIAS (WEBINAR*) by Dr. Lex Smith-Washington Part 1: June 6, :00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Part 2: June 7, :00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The purpose of this talk is to give language to the underpinnings of these divisions. In this session, we will explore the ongoing challenge of constructing an inclusive workplace. We focus specifically on fundamental psychological processes of unconscious bias, as well as how they give rise to behavioral microaggressions (alienating acts of subtle bias) that further encourages dissension. The goal is to identify the tools that leaders, managers and individuals may use to overcome these many automatic processes to achieve greater inclusion and cooperation in their workplaces. GROUPTHINK AND OTHER DECISION PITFALLS by Dr. Matt Bowler June 13, :00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. One of the biggest myths about groups is that they make better decisions. Sometimes they do. But often groups make poor decisions because of the many potential pitfalls of group decision making. This seminar will help you understand and avoid those pitfalls in order to make better quality decisions in a team setting. We will introduce and discuss ways to overcome both individual and group biases to improve decisions processes and outcomes. Dr. Bowler uses discussion, videos, cases and individual and group assessments to cover topics including causes and strategies for Groupthink, The Abilene Paradox, Group Shift, The Asch Effect, Sunk Costs, and Escalation of Commitment.
3 Certificate of Effective Management and Leadership CREATING AND DEVELOPING HIGH PERFORMANCE TEAMS by Dr. Raj Basu July 18, :00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. High-performance teams don t just happen. They are carefully built and well managed, and this is not always a smooth process. A key to strong, performance-oriented teams is building strong interpersonal relationships prior to the formation of teams. This seminar covers issues across the life span of teams, from deciding when to use them, to understanding their stages of development, to moving them toward high performance. Special attention will be given to the various challenges teams face in moving toward high performance (conflict, turning individuals into team players, motivation problems, team decision-making problems, etc.) and ways that teams can successfully navigate these obstacles. FROM TRADITIONALS TO GENERATION Z: LEADING GENERATIONS AT WORK by Dean Ken Eastman August 29, :00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Ever wonder how new hires could be so impatient or how your boss could never have heard of Snapchat? The answer largely lies here: For the first time, five generations are converging in the workplace. Examine how the different life experiences of Traditionals, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z create challenges in communicating and collaborating. You will also consider ways to bridge the generational divide. THE POWER OF INFLUENCE by Professor Andrew Urich September 11, :00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This seminar will help participants develop the skills necessary to establish and maintain productive working relationships through lecture, discussion, and exercises for practical application of the concepts. This program focuses on the science and practice of persuasive communication skills as it applies to your need to get your point across or get things done while maintaining positive relationships. GROWTH MINDSET: THE KEY TO STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT by Abbey Davis, MBA October 17, :00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. It s time to challenge the status quo when it comes to development. Research over the past 10-plus years is confronting long-standing beliefs around learning, performance and development. In this session, we ll explore the research of Dr. Carol Dweck, Dr. K. Anders Ericsson, and Dr. Angela Duckworth to discuss new perspectives that will help you succeed in your own development efforts and support those that you lead. We ll take a deep dive to understand how a Growth Mindset can help us be better leaders and how a specific process called Deliberate Practice can take our abilities to the next level. You ll leave this session with tools, resources and an action plan to help you incorporate these lessons around mindset, practice and resilience into your daily leadership activities. LEADERSHIP SKILLS FOR THE EMERGING MANAGER by Dr. Matt Bowler November 14, :00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Transitioning to management can be super rewarding, but it is not without challenges. This session will introduce you to the intricacies of being a manager and a leader. Participants will explore the various sources of interpersonal power and how to properly use them. You will also learn about transitioning to a management role, how to manage workplace politics and effective leadership techniques. Attendees will participate in discussions, cases and self-discovery assessments in order to learn to be effective leaders rather than just managers. *This Webinar session consists of two webinars held on June 6 and 7. If selecting this session the attendee is registering for both webinars which is considered one program session. LOCATION Sessions are held at OSU-OKC, 900 N. Portland Ave., Oklahoma City, OK.
