Workforce Development for Rhode Island Manufacturing August 8, 2017
Introduction Why We Are Here Manufacturers tell us daily about their need for a more qualified talent pool, and professional development services for their current employees It's a nationwide problem that hits home in Rhode Island There are many services to address the problem We ll help navigate some of those today
Real Jobs RI Julie O'Connell, Real Jobs RI RI Department of Labor and Training It is designed to ensure that Rhode Island employers have the talent they need to compete and grow while providing targeted education and skills training for Rhode Island workers. The goal of Real Jobs RI is to develop Real Jobs Partnerships that convene industry employers, key stakeholders and groups in partnerships that build alliances to address business workforce demands.
STEM Education William M. Davies, Jr Career and Technical High School
Center for Advanced Manufacturing William M. Davies, Jr Career and Technical High School offers training in manufacturing fields at the high school level in four areas: Machine Technology, Biomanufacturing, Pre-Engineering, and Electrical Serving between 800 to 850 students in the state of Rhode Island, more than 90% of Davies students graduate with credentials in their industry. Advisory Boards comprised of industry partners offer curriculum and program input and support. Program Target: Students
School-to-Career Office The School-to-Career Office provides work-based learning opportunities for students by matching them with positions in their industry of interest. Positions may be either unpaid (internships) or paid (commonly referred to as cooperative education, or a CO-OP ). As seniors, students alternate between a week of academics and a week of technical training. Accordingly, CO-OP positions are between twenty-five to thirty-five hours on alternating weeks. The School-to-Career Office also coordinates job shadowing and site visitation opportunities between businesses and the school. Program Target: Students

The Steel Yard s Weld to Work program is unique answer to a shortage of affordable and accessible vocational training and Rhode Island manufacturers hiring needs. It pays participants to learn to weld and fabricate by working on real contracts of artistic functional pieces, such as ornate fences, bike racks and trashcans. Participants either receive 30-hours or 150-hours of intensive training in which they learn to safely use all the tools common to a welding shop. Program Target: Employers, Unemployed, Under-Employed
