1 Weekly Job Postings & Internship Opportunities Updated on December 4, 2013 Posting #1 Electrical & Instrumentation Technician - The Roanoke Valley Energy facility, located across the street from Halifax Community College, is currently looking for an experienced Electrical & Instrumentation Technician. The I & E Technician is responsible for technical activities in instrumentation and control, electrical, and computer systems. The I & E Technician provides the technical services needed to support the reliable and continued operation of both units. He or she serves as an active team member who is also an environmental and safety steward. Primary Functions Troubleshoot, repair and maintain plant electrical, instrumentation, and computer equipment. Maintain and operate air emissions monitoring systems and perform associated reporting requirements. Maintain various databases and effectively use standard software packages. Assist in maintaining and controlling spare parts inventory. Maintain a clean and safe shop and plant environment. Complete the I & E Qualification program within one year. Train and develop other employees in electrical and instrumentation skills. Actively participate and assume responsibility for budget planning and control. Assist in plant operations and mechanical maintenance as required. Complete and properly document problems, repairs, and downtime. Update drawings and prints as required. Provide leadership and job coordination of contract personnel performing repairs or projects.

2 Requisition, order, and track parts and materials needed to complete tasks. Design and install new equipment and/or system modifications. Scope of Responsibility The I & E Technician operates from established and well-known procedures under minimum supervision, performing duties independently with only general direction given. Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines. The I & E Technician encounters recurring work situations of high complexity, with occasional variations from the norm. The I & E Technician must perform work in a safe manner, in compliance with all environmental permits. The I & E Technician must effectively communicate information to supervision and fellow plant personnel, relative to the condition of plant equipment and performance, and provide suggestions for plant improvements. The I & E Technician must perform duties in such a way to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio. All employees have the responsibility to both the customer and their co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure the customers needs are being met. Working Relationships The I & E Technician reports to the Lead I & E Technician and the Maintenance Manager, works in cooperation with the operating utility on matters pertaining to the daily operation of the plant and responds to direction from the Lead I & E Technician in the absence of the Maintenance Manager. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Physical requirements include: working on feet for up to 12 hour periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting 75 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required. All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a postoffer physical examination and drug screening and post- employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility. Job Qualifications Individual must be a high school graduate or equivalent. All individuals must demonstrate a strong aptitude in the areas of math, electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, and production

3 control. Welding and machine shop experience a plus. The individual must have at least three years of experience with high pressure turbines and coal fired boilers or comparable power generating equipment. He or she will be required to furnish all basic hand tools according to a list provided by the company. Familiarity with air emissions federal regulations and other air permitting requirements is needed. The candidate should have the ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment. He or she must have excellent oral and written communication skills. The individual must successfully complete an I & E Skills Test. The candidate must have knowledge of his or her own assignments and eventually of others in the department, as well as, that of company structure and operations. The candidate should possess an understanding of the departmental goals and activities. Good judgment skills are necessary. The individual must be able to prioritize, be flexible and deal with unexpected situations. Attendance Regular attendance is essential for satisfactory performance in this position. Periods of unusual working hours will also be required during abnormal plant conditions. Interns will earn a stipend of $8.25 per hour and work 40 hours per week for 10 weeks in the summer.

4 To be eligible for the program, a student must be a permanent North Carolina resident with an overall grade point average of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale, and have graduated from high school and subsequently completed their sophomore year of college before beginning the internship. Community college students must complete their first year before beginning the internship. Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program. To qualify for a position designated for law interns, a student must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship. Students having previously held paid internships at the Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office are not eligible to apply. Interns are selected through a competitive process overseen by the NC Internship Council. Selection is based on a review of applications by the Council, student interviews with prospective supervisors, academic records, participation in extracurricular activities, and interest in state government.
