1 Edmonton Catholic Schools is now accepting applications for the position of Assistant Supervisor, Maintenance Services (New position) Edmonton Catholic Schools is a large urban school District whose mission is to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another. The District is comprised of over 42,000 students and 5,000 employees in 96 schools and other sites. Edmonton Catholic Schools requires an Assistant Supervisor responsible for supporting the overall maintenance of District owned buildings, grounds and associated infrastructure, as part of a team including District staff, contractors and consultants. The primary responsibility is to provide a safe and efficient working environment for District students and staff. This is accomplished by overseeing and evaluating work to ensure the performance is within District standards and a variety of legislative bodies. The job provides leadership to a team of Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) staff and oversees the work of a variety of external contractors and consultants working on specific projects. This is a permanent, full time, Out of Scope, Level 5, position with a salary range of $67, $84, to commence as soon as possible. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Monitor staff performance, provide input into the evaluations and the disciplinary process; Utilize independent judgement and input from team members to develop plans and resources; implement and evaluate projects on completion; Participate in the preparation of estimates, coordination of plans and schedules, and in monitoring the completion of projects; Provide general construction and maintenance advice and information, within area of expertise, to department, District and school staff; Ensure work is performed within Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and regulations; Building Code legislation to reduce and eliminate risks; Participate in emergency responses related to fire, flood, break-in, mechanical failure and vandalism; Participate in department meetings, providing input into strategic and operational planning. Qualifications: Journeyman certification in a building trade, plus three years directly related experience, or five years directly related experience working in the construction industry; Knowledge of blue prints, plans, specifications, other technical material, construction methods and techniques, building codes; Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Legislation, and regulations, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Alberta Building Codes and Standards, and municipal emergency services; Knowledge of Microsoft programs including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and MS projects; Good leadership skills and the ability to coach, train and mentor staff; Good project management and time management skills and the ability to manage priorities and conflicting demands; Strong written and verbal communications skills; Must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident. The job is responsible for supporting the overall maintenance of District owned buildings, grounds and associated infrastructure, as part of a team including District staff and contractors and consultants. The primary responsibility is to provide a safe and efficient working environment for District students and staff. This is accomplished by overseeing and evaluating work to ensure the performance is within District standards and a variety of legislative bodies. Leadership Provide leadership to a team of AUPE staff including coaching, mentoring and training Monitor staff performance, provide input into the evaluations and the disciplinary process Assign and assess work to ensure it is completed correctly and within established standards and timelines Oversee the work of contractors and consultants 2. Project planning and management Participate as a team member in forecasting and scheduling long-term projects to aid in the sustainability of District facilities Participate as a member of the planning and design team Utilize independent judgement and input from team members to develop plans and resources; implement and evaluate projects on completion Collaborate with team in scheduling projects, acting as a liaison between the unit, schools and District staff, to support the delivery of long-term plans Participate in the preparation of estimates, coordination of plans and schedules, and in monitoring the completion of projects 3. Consultation and communication Respond to inquiries regarding issues within the area of responsibility Provide general construction and maintenance advice and information, within area of expertise, to department, District and school staff Liaise with District staff in delivering services whilst focusing on minimizing disruption to school activities Provide technical guidance to Custodial Services staff Provide guidance and expertise to District staff 4. Occupational Health and Safety Ensure quality, policy and standards compliance and safety in all work tasks Ensure that staff are aware of OHS requirements and other legislated code requirements Ensure work is performed within Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Regulations; Building Code legislation to reduce and eliminate risks Ensure outside contractors and the District are not exposed to any future liabilities October

Emergency management Participate in emergency responses related to fire, flood, break-in, mechanical failure and vandalism Contact the respective first responders to address break and enter, vandalism and fire alarms Take steps to minimize the impact of such events to the provision of educational services 6. Department activities Participate in department meetings, providing input into strategic and operational planning Work to continuously improve the unit s mandate to maintain and enhance the District s facilities Act as supervisor during absences Review and make recommendations to improve efficiency by identifying ineffectiveness in equipment Make recommendations with cost estimates to department managers and supervisors Assist with department projects and other duties as assigned 7. Maintain technical knowledge through a range of professional development activities. 4 ORGANIZATIONAL DATA: Identify any measurable areas upon which the job has either direct or indirect impact. The job works closely with department staff in the delivery of Maintenance Services throughout the District with direct impact on approximately 100 sites. The job provides leadership and guidance to a team of AUPE staff, contractors and consultants working on specific projects. The incumbent is required to provide technical leadership, with an understanding of current regulations and codes pertaining to the work, and an ability to read and understand plans, specifications and other information relevant to the project. Work is performed within: Alberta Fire Code Alberta Building Codes and Standards Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Regulations The incumbent is required to be available to respond emergency calls at all times including: Edmonton Police Services with respect to break in, vandalism Edmonton Fire Rescue Services with respect to calls related to fire alarms Security system service providers with respect to break-ins, flooding and mechanical problems response CONTACTS: Identify internal and/or external contacts such as co-workers, clients, stakeholders and partners.
