1 arc Social Impact report 2016: summary How it works Business in the Community arc programme supports social enterprises to grow and create jobs helping to change lives. Launched in September 2011, the arc programme is a needs-led skills based volunteering programme, which supports social enterprises in becoming more sustainable, grow and create jobs. It offers a bespoke support package to social enterprises, including access to business expertise from our corporate partners, subsidised training, social impact consultancy and discounted premises, supply chain introductions and profiling opportunities. Since the start of the programme 153 social enterprises have been supported. The support provided by the business volunteers is based on the individual needs of each arc social enterprise. This varies from advice to delivery of specific project work. The two support areas most valued by the arc social The support we receive from arc has been instrumental in building awareness, promoting our mission, making community connections, and most importantly, providing a strong support infrastructure with people and more that encourages and contributes in a challenging start up environment. Leslie Alfin, PRACTivate LTD. enterprises over the past year was the business advice/project support provided by the business volunteers and the networking opportunities created with other social enterprises. 82% rated the business advice/project support as creating some/very positive effects and 67% indicated some or very positive effects through the networking activities. We are supporting over 2,000 children now, a number which will continue to grow. We very much enjoy being part of the programme, thanks again to all the team. Cecilia Crossley, From Babies With Love 86% of respondents believed arc had some or very positive effects on improving the self-confidence of the social enterprises business leader, and 77% stated that arc had some or very positive effects on the creation of their medium and long-term business strategy. Percentage of social enterprises reporting some or very positive effects due to their participation on the arc programme over the past year 100% 90% 70% 50% 40% 30% 20% 0% 86% 77% 46% 49% arc supports economic value 20.7 million Savings to the State 221 million in GVA to the UK economy The contributions of people employed directly or indirectly through arc social enterprises is conservatively estimated to have added 221 million in GVA to the UK economy from the beginning of the programme. The savings to the State as a result of arc social enterprises supporting the unemployed into work is estimated at 20.7 million. This saving includes the fiscal benefit to the State of jobseekers allowance claimants entering work, increased income taxations and increased national insurance contributions to HMRC of individuals employed directly by arc social enterprises. This does not include savings due to reduced take up of housing benefits, council tax support or other benefits. The Prince s Responsible Business Network I 3
