2 Fife s Developing the Young Workforce is focused on three themes: Growing a Culture of Enterprise in all schools, to enable young people to be skilled and confident Creating structured opportunities for secondary schools to engage directly with employers Delivering increased support to those at greatest risk of not going onto education, employment or training This brochure contains information on a range of programmes that businesses can become involved in to grow Fife s future talent. DYW Fife is a business-led partnership that represents a wide range of employers - from small enterprises to multi-nationals. The DYW Fife board is shaping plans to develop young people to meet current and future business needs. This involves implementing the national strategy locally to strengthen links between business and education. DYW Fife is keen to support your business, and is asking all employers to take part in at least one of the programmes featured. The Developing the Young Workforce Board for Fife, supported by key partners including Fife College, is now providing a range of programmes for Fife businesses. We are pleased to provide information about these, and urge you to get involved. Your future workforce is currently being educated in Fife s schools. 3 Programmes for Businesses The programmes on offer to businesses are wide-ranging and enable employers to: Inspire young people to work for your company, or sector Give young people work experience Market your business to a future workforce and develop young talent Develop employees through supporting young people Get a fresh perspective on business challenges Build community profile and manage your Corporate Social Responsibility Growing a Culture of Enterprise in schools The following programmes are designed to expand enterprise skills and promote an enterprise culture throughout Fife. Enterprise Game Now in digital format, the Enterprise Game is a fun and interactive educational game based on the Fife economy and business community. Young people simulate the development and running of their own business to create a successful and sustainable enterprise. 4toFortune The 4toFortune programme provides a month-long challenge where teams convert 4 seed money into as much as they can. Young people engage in this process with support from businesses. They focus their creative, communication, influencing and teamwork skills to sell products and services to establish a successful social enterprise. Engineering in Fife Engineering in Fife supports primary teachers and pupils in the development of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. Topics taught in school are incorporated into a final enterprise challenge, that reinforces learning. The programme also involves design, problem solving, creative-thinking, communication and teamwork skills. Tycoon Teens, Inspiring Fife This is an enterprising challenge that supports young people to create a new service, or product. Entrepreneurial support can be provided to evolve innovative ideas and personal skills, to create a real prospect for the future. Career Fairs Careers Fairs are becoming a commonplace way for young people and their parents to engage with employers. There are fairs in all secondary schools, and many primary schools hold them. Businesses have the opportunity to explain their business and sector. Fife Future Car Challenge The IET Formula Goblin project inspires pupils to take an interest in engineering in a fun and innovative way. Schools involved have Goblin cars, and build their very own drivable electric car. Teams of pupils take part, and, once built, cars race in the Fife Future Car Challenge race meeting. Businesses can sponsor cars, or supply a STEM Ambassador. STEM Ambassadors STEM Ambassadors come from a broad range of sectors, businesses and organisations to inspire young people in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects, and open the doors to a world of opportunity. Through engaging with pupils and supporting teachers, STEM Ambassadors provide living, working examples of how young people can apply STEM subjects to carve out interesting and rewarding careers.

4 Employer opportunities to engage with secondary schools These programmes offer the chance to work with pupils in secondary schools. They provide opportunities to develop Fife s Future workforce. Energise Fife Work Experience Programme This programme enables young people to access work experience during the year before they leave school. It offers a flexible and adaptable approach. In a typical week of work experience there is an induction, work shadowing and a final debrief and interview. Industry Challenge We work with employers to build customised programmes and set challenges for young people. Typically, companies work to establish a challengebased activity that allows them to also market their company s brand and business. One example is the Raytheon Quadcopter Challenge, where Raytheon UK delivers engineering lessons. The Challenge culminates in teams building a drone that pupils then fly through an obstacle course. Foundation Apprenticeships Scheme Foundation Apprenticeships are twoyear programmes that offer pupils the opportunity to gain hands-on industry experience while at school. Employers can sponsor a young person and support work-based learning. This involves offering mentoring and work experience over several weeks. Foundation Apprenticeships have been developed with employers and are structured around industry frameworks. Champions Club A pool of experienced business people work with individual schools to make them more business-like, and with individual businesses to help them design and develop a talent pipeline. The Champions Club gives support, clear direction and focus to your engagement with local schools. Career Ready Mentoring Scheme Run by Career Ready, a UK wide charity, the mentoring scheme supports young people to increase their awareness of local job opportunities and how to access employment. Career Ready coordinates mentors, who meet with young people regularly, and arrange work experience. Many young people enter direct employment with their placement company at the end of the scheme. Callum has proven to be a great asset to our business. Although still only in his very early twenties, he progressed rapidly from a Saturday job whilst at Bell Baxter High School to full-time Catering Manager. He has learnt how our business works and brought a fresh young approach to our restaurant. Jayne Kirk The Scottish Deer Centre School and College Based Partnership Programmes A number of courses are running in schools and colleges that require employer support. These run across a range of Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) levels from 1-7 and enable businesses to support young people to become work-ready.

5 Supporting those at greatest risk of not going onto education, employment or training These programmes support young people to experience quality work-based learning tailored to their individual circumstances. Supported Learning Fife College delivers education and training that meets the needs of young people with additional support needs, and provides opportunities for them to progress onto more advanced study, or into work. We are asking employers to offer students work placements and to raise awareness of employment opportunities. This programme also offers tailored support to businesses. Rising Stars This programme targets looked after children for intensive academy-style programme activity, designed to ensure a positive destination from school. Employers can support this programme by offering mentoring support and potential recruitment opportunities. One-by-One This programme enables all young people who are disengaging from school, and attending less than 80% of the time, to benefit from mentoring support and to engage in life-changing work-based learning. Additional Support Needs (ASN) Employers can provide opportunities for young people who need additional support to access the workforce and develop new skills. Additional support needs can be both long- and short-term, or can refer to the help a young person needs in getting through a difficult period.
