2 Plant Operation and Maintenance (O&M) the primary objective of a power plant owner is to maximize his profit Minimize the investment costs for construction, Minimize the lifecycle costs Maximize performance The life cycle costs are directly influenced by the O&M cost

4 O&M Plants Management strive to : Reduce costs Increase Availability, Reliability Ensure sustainable performance for the life-time+ of the plant without compromising HSE which is, as always, a paramount consideration

5 O&M O&M programme have to cover, on time, all measures, both administrative and technical, necessary to: Predict, identify and mitigate degradation of a functioning system, structure or component Restore the design functions of a failed system, structure or component to the acceptable level

6 O&M The need for proven O&M optimization methods and techniques (organizational, Engineering) to perform the right tasks on the right asset at the right time, with the right procedure, parts, consumables & tools by the right high committed qualified resources

7 An O&M assessment provides a systematic look at all aspects of the current O&M activities (including organization, policies, contractual requirements, assets (tangible & intangible), documentation, parts, consumables, tools, archieves (hardware & software), vision, strategy, objectives and future opportunities)

8 The main Goal of an effective O&M assessment is : sustainable performance for all during the life (cycle +) of the plant

9 O&M assessment may include: Auditing the plant environment Interviews with O&M teams, managers, HR, Finance, QHSE, client, shareholders, contractors Review of systems designed conditions Spot tests Trends of O&M critical data Obsolescence Short, middle and long terms improvements, Upgrades & refurbishment needs

10 The analysis of those data will reveal the critical area where special focus will be made for improvements to be proposed, validated and implemented

12 Main Assessment steps O&M Assessment 1) Gain understandings of: Systems and equipment s designed performance, O&M and environment requirements How equipment s and systems are currently operated and maintained Required skills and competencies Actual skills and competencies

13 2) Identify issues contributing to premature asset failures

14 3) Identify aging mechanism that can act on plant systems, structures and components

15 4) Identify Obsolete assets (systems, Equipment s, Softwares..)

16 5) Develop a planning of recommended improvement ways to ensure the required sustainable performance

17 6) Determine the effective needs on trainings and qualifications (for a better management of the HR budget)

18 7)Help prioritize HR & financial needs (present a clear picture of where, when and what improvements may be most cost effective to implement.
