Table activity 1. Take the COLOR inventory at your table, and tally the results*. *Note: If you took the inventory last year, you may take it again, or read through the 4 color descriptors handout at your table.
The Clipboard, the Puppy, the Microscope, and the Beach Ball A Presentation for the PTO President s Forum May 14, 2014 Julie McDonnell Coordinator of Professional Learning
Where we ve been. Identifying with a COLOR helps us to: Understand people better Process information differently Communicate more effectively Form successful partnerships/relationships
In the real world.it s the relationships the formal and informal networks of people that really govern how the organization runs and how value is created. Michael Schrage, Wall Street Journal, March 1990
The Goals. To recognize your strengths To celebrate the strengths of others To facilitate cooperation To improve your relationships To value others for who they are
True Colors at Work: BLUE Concentrate on people and relationships. Focus on service, and health and welfare of people. Prefer warm, supportive, harmonious environments Are imaginative, and enthusiastic. Dislike competition, conflict, and strong authority. Promote creativity, flexibility, and individuality.
True Colors at Work: GOLD Prefer jobs that allow them to be thorough, accurate, and systematic Prefer to see a job through to the end and feel the results Are practical, efficient, and cooperative; respect authority, discipline, and punctuality Work best in structured and hard-working environments Follow procedures and do things the right way Honest and dependable workers who put needs of organization above their own
True Colors at Work: GREEN Driven towards work that involves analytical and creative focus Visionary and independent workers Most productive when they can perfect an idea and move on Work well with complex strategies and abstract concepts Prefer a work environment with minimum structure Enjoy taking risks to test their innovative ideas Biggest asset is drive to be competent, logical, and accurate
True Colors at Work: ORANGE Tackle work with enthusiasm so they can quickly move on Great at working under pressure and prefer jobs that are lively, risky, and unpredictable Grow restless with jobs that tie them down and limit freedom Straightforward, realistic, and practical workers who bring a flair, energy, and excitement to the workplace Talented, resourceful, skillful, and adaptable Upbeat and social; present a positive self-image Action-oriented; know how to get results
Another perspective. Which symbol best represents you?
What Does a Puppy need? RELATIONSHIPS! They are optimistic, passionate, romantic, and spiritual. They are harmonious, sensitive, encouraging, and kind. They are mediators, peacemakers, cause-oriented, and symbol-driven.
What does a Clipboard need? DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITY! They are conservative, organized, useful, and responsible. They are secure, loyal, analytical, and trustworthy. They are policy-makers, detail-hounds, service-oriented, and law-abiding.
What does a GREEN need? INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE! They are intellectual, complex, philosophical, and logical. They are independent, visionary, perfectionistic, and global. They are idea people, standard-setters, futuristic, and question-askers.
What does a Beach Ball need? FREEDOM! They are playful, creative, expressive, and competitive. They are impulsive, spontaneous, quick-witted, and kinesthetic. They are entertainers, risk-takers, non-conformists, and boundary-pushers.
What does this mean for a PTO/PSO? Know thyself and cut everybody else a break. Try not to filter through your own color/symbol. Try hard to understand your colleagues and family. Pay attention to how you are being perceived. Use the skills of each color/symbol to synergize (create more by using everyone s gifts.) Celebrate everyone s contribution. Everything you do is for the kids!
Scenarios Who would be best at... ROLES: President Secretary Treasurer Assistant School Volunteer Coordinating events Copier, etc. COMMITTEE WORK: Trivia Night DARE Graduation 8 th Grade Dance Senior Celebration Fall Festival Variety Show Etc.
Working as a Team: Where do we go from here? Reflect on the following Why is understanding your personality type important in terms of working within a PTO/PSO? How does understanding your personality type help you and help others? What implications does this have for our work in the future?
