RCA Strategic Plan An LTAD Approach

Why Plan? Alice came to the fork in the road. "Which road do I take?" she asked. "Where do you want to go?" responded the Cheshire cat. "I don't know," Alice answered. "Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."- Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Why Do We Plan?

Building Efficient and Effective Systems What are we looking for? Structure Element compatibility System performance analysis (stand alone or part of the integrated system) Working synergistically Value added resourcing Return on Investment Probability of success

We need a System model! With all Challenges, there are opportunities

Example: To win gold medals at the Olympics, Paralympi cs and World Championships Aim: The focus is on the Training to Compete, Training to Win and Training to Win II stages of the LTAD, rec ognizing that the feeder system to the National Tea m is through the strong club, university and provin cial programs. Rowing Canada Aviron intends to est ablish partnerships and initiatives that will help dev elop the talent pool as a bridge between elite rowi ng and domestic rowing.

What have we seen? Increased dialogue with High Performance and Interprovincial Coaches Committee Better communication and use of Canadian Sport Centres. Increased contact with provincial coaches, RCA High Performance Director and National Coaches. Increased Interaction, Increased Capacity = Enhanced Excellence

Rower Coach, Coach Education & Development Competitions Infrastructure & Support Systems For All Stages of LTAD

For each stage: What does the athlete want and need? How many coaches with what skills? What type of competition? How many? What support systems and infrastructure is required? What do we have in the system now that we can use? What do we need to stop doing? What do we need to create?

Train to Win I & 2 Objective 1.2 To support and to develop a team of coac hes with the necessary knowledge, skills an d to work toward a ratio of 1 coach to 15 rowers in the National Team e nvironment. Support our National Team Coaches and p rovide development opportunities for the next generation

Strategic Initiatives Design and implement a relevant professional development system for high performance rowing coaches that is consist ent with the NCCP - High Performance parameters. Discuss and develop an RCA Model for rowing technique, recognizing the LTAD stages of development and skill acquisition.

LEARN TO TRAIN LEARN TO ROW To grow the membership to 20,000 To grow the sport of rowing by recruiting an d retaining rowers, coaches and volunteers in volunteers in the following LTAD stages - Learn to Row, Training to Train, Learning to Compete and Rowing for Life.

An Example: Training to Train stage Rower Coach Regattas Infrastructure Sculling & Small Boat Skills How to coach sculling How to rig correctly Do we have enough events for small boats? Do clubs have the right equipment? Coach Education (NSO) Competition Structure (NSO/PSO) Support Systems & Infrastructur e (Clubs)

STRATEGIC INITIATIVES Expand the base of support for and knowledge of LTAD Master Learning Facilitators for C-I are younger, successful coaches LTAD modules in NCCP

SYSTEM IMPACT Succession Increasing # s who understand LTAD Influence at the PSO and Club level Future leaders and mentors for new coaches.

OUR SYSTEMS WITHIN THE SYSTEM 1. System of athlete recruitment and retention by stage 2. System of coach recruitment, development, retention and recognition 3. System of competition (structure, planning, administration) by stage 4. Systems of support

Objective 2.3: Provide fair and meaningful competiti ons and other events for rowers in each of the LT AD stages.

LTAD HELPS CREATE PARNTERSHIPS Who is responsible for what? Responsible to deliver..? Integrated planning with PSOs and clubs?

LEVERAGING FOR MOMENTUM Federal/Provincial/Territorial Government Support Example: Row Ontario Example: Rowing BC

Crossing the Finish Line Increase in integrated planning Avoid duplication Increase interaction Increased coordination and collaboration Increase development of effective system
