4 Introduction Vocational trainers play a pivotal role in reducing the skill gap that exists in vocational sectors by imparting training and development to new recruits. Therefore, it becomes imperative for them to be highly proficient in the requisite domain skills, along with possessing the adequate teaching acumen. In this report, we provide an in-depth analysis of the proficiency of vocational skill trainers in teaching skills and in their respective domain. The report evaluates skill levels of trainers in eight vocational skill sectors Apparel, Construction, Healthcare, Retail, Automobiles and components, Electronics/IT/ITeS/Hardware, Logistics and Tourism & Hospitality. This report is based on the evaluation of over 500 vocational trainers who participated in the Skill India Fellowship conducted by Aspiring Minds. These trainers were assessed by conducting an online test, followed by an interview with a highly qualified jury. The trainers were evaluated on three areas teaching aptitude and pedagogy, information gathering and synthesis skills and domain knowledge in their respective sector. 5 Executive Summary The key findings of the present study are as follows: The study unveils that only 27.73% trainers have the required professional skillset in their choice of industry. Construction sector has as low as 7.14% trainers with requisite professional skill level, while Tourism/Hospitality sector has the highest percentage of 71.43%. Lowest percent trainers with requisite skill proficiency observed in construction sector can be ascribed to their low performance in AMCAT modules Instructor Aptitude Test, Information Gathering & Synthesis and Domain module. Upon application of individual benchmarks on AMCAT modules, we find that only 48% trainers clear the cut-off for cognitive skill, 51% for instructor aptitude and 59% for domain knowledge. Gender demographic analysis uncovers that females have higher skill competence and AMCAT scores. Similar analysis for the type of current city shows that, as expected, metro cities are likely to produce more skilled trainers than the non-metro cities. City zones form pairs in terms of performance, where one pair is of North & South and the other is East & West having similar quality of trainers within the respective pair with the former being more prowess than the latter. Age and experience of trainers do not act as a strong differentiating criteria of performance. However, highest educational degree is a good predictor of industry readiness, hence higher the qualification, the better is the skill level. Aspiring Minds' National Trainers' Skills Report 3

6 Skill India Fellowship a. Vision Aspiring Minds Skill India Fellowship aims to recognize and award vocational skills trainers across India. The vision of this fellowship is to celebrate excellence in skills training to ensure increased aspirations, achievements, and pride. b. Methodology Online applications invited on: Screening of applications basis eligibility criteria Online test at 28 centres across India Interviews at 5 regional centres. Highly qualified Jury members from each sector interviewed candidates on domain skills and teaching Pedagogy. c. 9 1. Sector-wise Analysis a. On applying the minimum required threshold, we find that percentage of trainers who have the requisite skill level varies from 7.14% in Construction sector to 56.86% in Tourism/Hospitality sector. As low as 27 out of 100 trainers show professional competence in their choice of role. Mean scores Instructor Aptitude Test Information Gathering and Synthesis Domain 838 Construction Automobiles/Auto Components Healthcare Tourism/Hospitality Others Electronics/IT/ITES/Hardware Retail The reason for lowest proficiency of trainers in Construction sector can be attributed to their performance on all three AMCAT modules. For Instructor Aptitude Test and Domain module, Tourism/Hospitality sector scores highest while Construction sector scores lowest with a difference of 186 and 347 points respectively. Trainers from Tourism/Hospitality sector have scored highest, and followed by those from Retail and Healthcare. Aspiring Minds' National Trainers' Skills Report 8

11 2. Skill Gap Skill gap analysis was carried out as part of this study. The analysis was individually carried out for each module. A skill gap exists if the trainer does not meet the required threshold/cut-off in that particular module. Hence, a trainer can have a skill gap in one or more modules. IGS is followed by Instructor Aptitude test, where 51% can which is slightly more than that observed for IGS. Least gap is observed for Domain module. Gender Gender Throughput Male 25.30% Female 32.82% Instructor Aptitude Test Information Gathering and Synthesis Domain Male Female Females are observed to be more proficient than males. To further understand the gap, the study also investigates skills which are deficient in males when compared with those in females. The reason for higher proficiency in females than males can be accredited to their performance in cognitive and domain skills. Region Zone Zone Throughput North 36.36% South 34.12% West 17.69% East 20.78% Instructor Aptitude Test Information Gathering and Synthesis Domain North South West East Proficiency of trainers from Northern and Southern zone are at par with one another with north performing slightly better, which is supported by their AMCAT scores. Eastern zone has slightly higher proficiency than Western, while an opposite trend is observed for their AMCAT score where West has scored more in instructor aptitude and IGS modules. This can be attributed to better exposure and training facilities available in metro cities. It is observed that trainers from metro cities have higher scores across all modules. Widest gap of 90 points is observed in instructor aptitude, followed by cognitive (61 points) and domain knowledge (45 points). Aspiring Minds' National Trainers' Skills Report 12

Trainers with masters degree are 1.6 times more competent than those with bachelor s degrees. The gap increases to 3.7 times when they are compared with diploma holders. Similar trends are observed for AMCAT scores as well. It is observed that highest gap between trainers with master s degree and those with diploma is observed across IGS (162), while least is observed across domain modules (71). Similar unbiased mean score distribution is observed across AMCAT s Instructor Aptitude Test, Information Gathering & Synthesis and Domain modules. 18 4. Winners Analysis Winners are selected from each sector on the basis of their interview performance and scores. There are 30 winners in total. There were 30 winners in total. On comparing mean scores of winners with that of remaining trainers who were shortlisted for interview, it is observed that winners have performed significantly better than the remaining trainers.
