1 MNR Summer Job opportunities for youth Ken McWatters with Pembroke MNR has brought a number of exciting summer opportunities for students here in Pembroke. If you know of any youth who may be interested, please advise them that they must apply online by going to this website. ( and following the instructions listed. The MNR office cannot accept any applications in hard copy. Please also advise them of the applicable deadlines listed below. - Pembroke MNR is advertising to fill 6 positions: 2 Projects Assistants, 1 Natural Heritage Technician, 1- Aquatic Wildlife Biologist, 1- Assistant Fisheries Technician and 1-Office Clerk. The Aquatic Biologist and the Natural Heritage Information Technician positions were posted February 15 th -March 1 st : I wasn t aware of these until now. The Fisheries Technician will be posted March 8 th - March 22 nd. The Clerical and the 2 Projects Assistant positions will be posted March 29 th - April 12 th. 4 Objective 1: Level 1 & weeks Job Type-07 MNR Student Aquatic /Wildlife Biologist Fish and aquatic ecosystem assessment and research, including creel surveys, index netting, biological sampling, data entry and basic analyses. Projects may be related to community analyses and structure of aquatic ecosystems, habitat assessment, growth and diet analyses, for wetlands, stream, and lake systems. Wildlife population and wildlife habitat assessment including both aerial and ground surveys; species identification and mapping; as well as sampling and assessment for a variety of wildlife including game and non-game species, waterfowl and species at risk. The operation of boats, outdoor motors, ATVs and other specialized equipment may be required. The assistant may work outdoors and in diverse weather conditions. Section 2 - QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Communications and Interpersonal Skills You apply your written communication skills to prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports, document findings, record data). You apply your interpersonal skills to work in a team environment and have a strong work ethic to work independently. Technical Skills and Knowledge You apply your experience using Microsoft Office product suite, such as word processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), databases (Access), presentations (PowerPoint); and internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents. Analytical and Organizational Skills You apply your planning and organizational skills to collect, organize, review and verify information/data through review of files, reports, and other means. You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize and prioritize your work to meet competing deadlines. Requirements You can work in an outdoor environment with some physical activity involved, including lifting and carrying weighted items in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations You are willing to accompany staff on multi-day outdoor field trips. You must possess an Ontario G2 (or higher) Driver s Licence? You have a valid Pleasure Craft Operators Card, Standard First Aid and CPR certification, or are you willing and able to acquire these certifications as a condition of your employment.

6 MNR Job Type #19 Student Natural Heritage Information Technician Work to help make Ontario s natural heritage information accessible to those involved in conservation. Assist Natural Heritage Information Conservation staff with life science fieldwork Compile and enter natural heritage data into MNR databases Assist with documentation and preparation of plant and insect specimens Assist staff with data collection, trend analysis and map preparation using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software Create queries using SQL, database tasks using Microsoft Access, Programming using VBScript, JAVA, HTML. 8 Objective 2: Level 1 & weeks Job Type-05 MNR Student Assistant Fisheries Technician Field work could include assisting staff with conducting surveys, data collection, mapping, inspections, interviews and day to day assigned activities. Duties includes operating equipment (e.g. pumps, nets, limn logical sampling, YSI/Hydro lab, ponars) related to fish stocking; egg collection; fish culture; fisheries population and habitat assessment; creel surveys; lake and stream surveys; index sampling; habitat and substrate assessment; and classification of streams, rivers and lakes. Perform research, conduct analysis and evaluate environmental information and data to produce reports. Some positions will require operation of boats, motors, trucks, all-terrain vehicle (ATVs) and other specialized equipment is required. Position will work outdoors and in diverse weather conditions.
