2 SFA Apprenticeship Project Aim 1. To analyse Apprenticeship take up by sector in the Black Country 2. To identify & survey a target group of strategic companies from sectors that are performing less well in terms of apprenticeship take up. Understand their barriers to apprenticeship take up. 3. BCLEP can make future plan to address the issues identified Timescale : Jan Mar 2018
3 SFA Apprenticeship Project Plan 1. ESFA Datacube to list all companies (EDRS Number) with Apprenticeship starts BCC 2. Blue Sheep Data to convert EDRS numbers to Company Names Blue Sheep 3. Analyse Sector Apprenticeships using Datacube data and Black Country EIU BCC 4. Identify Target list of companies from Strategic Company list & sector BCC 5. Create (Telephone Survey) for target companies BCC 6. Telephone Survey target companies (800) External telemarketing 7. Create report & potential recommendations BCC

Retail Sector underperforming (largest sector in BC)+ i) Low number of starts (both as % of companies and as % of employees) ii) Predominantly lower level apprenticeships 2. Digital & Creative Sector underperforming i) Low number of starts (both as % of companies and as % of employees) but ii) more upper level apprenticeships 3. Healthcare and Life Sciences is best performing sector 4. Engineering sector performing well in medium sized business Construction performing well in Micro sized business (but not medium & large) 5. Less than 50% of Business due to pay the Levy had Apprentice start in the previous year Target Survey at Strategic Companies in Retail & Construction

21 Apprenticeship Analysis Summary & Conclusions 1. Retail Sector has significantly less understanding of Apprenticeships and where to find information. 2. Construction Sector has better understanding of Apprenticeships but cannot find the programme content relevant to them and find the process too difficult. 3. All sectors and sizes of business find the biggest challenge is finding people and time for internal training & mentoring of apprentices. Develop Sector based approach to Apprenticeship Promotion when developing BCLEP s Sector Skills Plans
