1 NS Inspectors Distance Learning Programme The provision of training in the content and application of the NS Standards is one part of our strategy of support to the Oil & Gas Industry to assist them in reducing the risk of equipment failure during drilling operations. There are three elements that are integral to this approach The NS- 1 & NS- 2 standards themselves Training in those standards A programme of independent assessment and accreditation of products and services that are provided to the requirements of the standards. Each on their own is an important contributor to the objective of equipment failure risk reduction. Together they can create a significant barrier to failures occurring due to inappropriate, unsuitable or poorly maintained equipment being used where it is not fit for purpose. Therefore, as you complete the online course you will come across information that although you may not use it on a day by day basis, is important as part of an integrated approach. Through your inspection team completing the NS Inspectors Distance Learning Programme and qualifying for their Certificates your company will be making its own contribution to the objective of equipment failure free drilling operations. NS Theory Inspection Training This Theory only course is designed to provide the technical knowledge required to manage and carry out the inspection process. The objective is to have a clear understanding and interpretation of NS- 2 (and other inspection standards used in the Industry today) and to cover the differences between the industry inspection standards used today and why they are required. The course includes details of the factual material to familiarize candidates with the terminology and methodology. Examinations and assessments use a multiple- choice format. The multiple- choice format allows candidates to show that they understand the course content and can apply it even at a trainee level. This also allows inspectors, for whom English is not their first language, an introduction to the terminology used before taking on the more detailed approach before advancing in their studies. 1

2 The Course is aimed at: Inspectors without experience in the NS- 2 TM Standards Trainee Inspectors Personnel in companies employing: Inspectors, sub- contracting individuals or companies, who are providing inspection or QA/QC services to the NS- 2 Standard Providers or purchasers of used or rented equipment inspected to the NS- 2 Standard Based on self- study the course is not just designed for Inspection personnel performing NDT, it can also be used or adapted to suit candidates who would benefit from a better understanding and knowledge of Inspection for either the management or supervision of used drilling equipment. The material for both courses will be presented in a number of sections, each section containing a number of modules. A team of mentors, with experience in the Industry, supports the study programme. Time period Candidates have up to 1 year to complete the course - though they can complete it as quickly as they wish within the confines of the final examination dates. A minimum of five modules completed per month is expected from candidates. Progress Assessments At the end of each section candidates will be asked to submit answers to multiple- choice questions, to the course programme mentors. Modules have a target mark of 70%. If the candidate doesn t reach 70% for a particular module then their paper will be sent back to them (with comments) for re- submission. Mentoring If a candidate loses marks on what is considered a key topic or they do not appear to have sufficiently understood a key topic, a mentoring session can be instigated, even if their overall mark exceeds the pass mark for the submitted module. Mentoring sessions offered for these courses include support via the Specification Help 2

3 Desk or telephone conversation, Skype TM conversation, video Skype TM or a face- to- face meeting. Examination At the end of the course candidates will be invited to attend an examination. The examination is a multiple- choice paper. The examinations are invigilated and marked by NS Accreditation & Standards representatives and can be held either at one of the offices of Fearnley Procter Group or at another agreed location. Certification On successful completion of all modules of the course, and the achievement of the required pass mark at the invigilated final examination, candidates will be awarded a Certificate of Examination. The certificate will show the details of the candidate, the modules studied, the date of certification and the final pass mark. Certificates are valid for two years at which time a refresher course will be presented to include any updates to the standards since the previous course. Certificates are not transferable and will remain the property of the sponsor. In the event that a candidate does not reach the required pass mark then they will be able to re- sit the examination within the following six months. 3

4 Course Content The course addresses the use of three main standards: API RP7G, T H Hill s DS- 1 Volume 3 & 4 as well as NS- 2. As NS- 2 supplements the API and T H Hill standards the course will cover why that is necessary and where it occurs. 6 A little background to NS- 2 TM The NS- 2 TM standard has been based on real life equipment failures. These failures have been investigated and recorded by Fearnley Procter and subjected to analysis over time. The underlying concept is to base our inspection on the prevention of failures and ultimately the reduction of Equipment Related Non- Productive Time (NPT). However, this is a complete system. Inspection being one link in the chain of events involved in drilling operations. Inspection may even be the most crucial stage, as the smallest error made during inspection can have the most detrimental effect downhole, costing millions in NPT. The NS range of standards and publications have been developed with this idea in mind and at the core of its content. Nevertheless, this is not enough. Having an inspection standard that could potentially save millions in NPT sitting in the inspection bay is one thing, but having an inspector with a competent working knowledge of the inspection standard along with the principles that govern it, is far better. At its inception NS- 2 TM was a Shell document and known as Shell Drillstring Inspection Standard. Shell had taken it over from Exxon in the US, since at the time little was available in the way of inspection standards for minimising drillstring failures. Shell assembled a quality team to work on the project of developing this document, which at the time, was still in its infancy. One of the members of the quality team happened to be Kevin Fearnley. Who, at the time, was the founder of OCTG Consultancy Limited, a successful and rapidly expanding consultancy company operating in Aberdeen. Shell assigned Kevin as their Principle Author, who sometime later, returned the document to Shell complete with enhanced Acceptance and Rejection Criteria and detailed Inspection Procedures. Shell released into the industry but soon wanted an organisation to take ownership of it along with SQAIR (Shell Quality and Inspection Requirements) for the manufacture and testing of New Drillstring and Well Completion Equipment. In 1998 OCTG Consultancy merged with Procter & Collins, another specialised Consultancy Company in Aberdeen, to form Fearnley Procter Group. Fearnley Procter, took over full ownership of the two standards; SQAIR, which became NS- 1 TM and , which became NS- 2 TM. Since those days at Shell, the standard has grown and developed, moving with the advances in technology and experiences of the sector. Drilling operations have become more intense, and 6

7 increasing stress is given to the reliability of the drilling equipment. NS- 2 has always prided itself on being at the forefront of the industry. Today it is in use with many Operators, Drilling and Service Companies worldwide, as is NS- 1 TM Other Material on the NS Information Hub Apart from the two critical standards NS- 1 TM and NS- 2 TM, which will cover all relevant study material for Quality, Inspection, Design, Testing of New, Refurbished and Used Drilling and Well Completion Equipment there are other NS Publications which are available for additional study as support material for the course programme, through our NS Information Hub. NS- 7 TM Drill String Failure Prevention This booklet concentrates on illustrating how to recognise drill string failure mechanisms, giving inspection personnel a better understanding on reporting back to their client when they have rejected equipment for a belled box, galled threads, crack and relating it to the 12 common failure mechanisms we see in the Industry today, i.e. Fatigue, Torsion, Tension, etc. NS- 19 TM The Rig Crew Tool Joint & Connection Handbook The recommendations in this handbook are based on over 30 years experience in all aspects of drill string operations from procurement to end of service life, including failure investigation. NS- 21 TM Drill String Knowledge Handbook This booklet is aimed at the Drilling Engineer involved in deciding on which drill pipe string should be used for a specific well. It is intended as a guide to fitness- for- purpose and a simple reference document, addressing in broad terms which drillstring is required for the job at hand. 7
