3 Three areas where Posti has successfully been using GIS Route optimization needs from delivery to transportation Routing needs from high density mail and early morning delivery to parcel and pickups up until linehaul routing. Several efficiency and service analysis needs also routing as part of decision making process. In future we need to be more dynamic in all different routing areas. Network modelling Modelling and optimizing networks as operative areas and locations in different scales, e.g. from grouping of mail boxes to sorting center network optimization, recent emphasis has been on delivery center network optimization. Enables strategic, tactical and operative decision making process. Segmentation and targeted marketing Modelling and recognizing different segments for targeted marketing and service offering purposes and also for understanding operational demand allocation and capacity needs.

4 Planning demand forecasting 1. Demand is having variation in geography, as service type, duration and frequency. 7 Planning improving route solution quality for parcel delivery In the past we focused on efficiency with our route planning, now when mail delivery time window changed from 16 to 18, we needed to improve route optimization quality to meet parcel delivery service levels 14 and 16 It is possible to see parcel delivery service quality based on our mail delivery route plan with parcel volume demand Analyzing route plan to discover weighted parcel delivery service level by comparing areas of LTA14 and LTA16 against parcel volume and route plan on delivery point level. If not meeting 99 % level, other actions are agreed to meet the service level. Parcel volume is delivered by mail delivery covering over 90 % of Finland. So mail delivery needs to meet parcel s service quality. Late zones are having approximately less than 10 parcels per day

9 Delivery operations execution PoMo as crucial GIS UI PoMo is enabling us to show route information as a list and as a route sequence on a map. Employees choose their daily route and are able to see information of the routes and delivery points. This enables dynamic route and schedule planning and also integration of other services. PoMo GPS tracking still needs improvements. Idea is to show status of delivery operations to managers real time and get information back to route planner to validate planning process and parameters.
