1 Zebra Food Labels and Ribbons Catalog For Zebra Desktop Label ers from As of 12/3/2012 This catalog is for food package labels and shipping labels and ribbons for Zebra desktop label printers (4 print width with 5 label rolls), including Zebra models TLP 2844 and GX430t that are available from How to Choose Labels and Ribbons 1. Choose the label size: Labels are listed by increasing width and length in the Label Catalog table below. If you don t see a width and length combination that you need, try swapping width with length since labels can usually be printed sideways. Create sample labels beforehand to ensure correct size. 2. Choose the right material and print method for your food package or shipping label: a. Fresh Foods and Baked Goods Stored Dry at Room Temperatures: Most fresh foods and baked goods use direct thermal paper labels which are the least expensive since they are thermal paper and no ribbon is needed. They look good, are durable enough for typical use, but are not meant for hot, frozen, wet, direct sunlight or long life (more than a few weeks). b. Hot or Long Shelf Life Food: Foods that are packaged or kept hot and dry or have long shelf lives need thermal transfer paper. Heat, light and time don t bother the labels and they stay white over time. Paper is inexpensive but ribbons are required so it costs more per label. c. Hot, Cold, Frozen, Wet, Long Term or Premium: Packages that need to look their best for the long run and may get hot, cold, wet, frozen or rough handling use thermal transfer poly (plastic) labels. d. Plastic Wrap: All label types here may be used on packaging that is not directly touching food. Most types are approved for plastic food wraps where the label is applied to one side of the wrap and food is touching the other side of the wrap, but note that some types are not (Z-Ultimate). None of the label types here may be applied directly to food (like the labels on apple skins). 3. If using thermal transfer, choose ribbons for the labels: (Direct thermal does not use ribbons.) a. Choose a ribbon type from the Ribbon Catalog table below: i. Wax for lowest cost, good resolution, decent durability and printing on rougher surfaces. (Use with paper labels where image quality and durability are not critical.) ii. Wax/Resin for better image quality (important for bar codes) and durability. (Use on better thermal transfer papers and poly plastics.) iii. Resin for best image quality and durability. (Use on best poly plastics.) b. Choose a ribbon width as wide or wider than the label being printed. c. one ribbon roll per label roll. How to Call during Pacific business hours to order. 5 Ribbon Catalog All ribbons below are for Zebra desktop printers Ribbons are sold by the case with the case prices quoted in the table below. Refer to the How to Choose Labels and Ribbons section above for instructions and general information. Ribbons are only required for thermal transfer labels and not direct thermal labels. Width and Length are in inches. Select ribbons at least as wide as the labels to be printed. (Ribbons can be wider than the labels but will not be as cost efficient.) one ribbon per label roll. Zebra label printers use both methods. methods are more smear-resistant than ink. transfer works by applying heat to a ribbon which transfers pigment from the ribbon to the label. transfer makes the best labels with the darkest, highest resolution and most durable labels that work in the greatest temperature and moisture ranges. Direct thermal labels have a heat-sensitive surface that turns dark when heat is applied. Most food labels are this type because it is the most economical since no ribbons are needed. However, they are only good for food with short shelf lives and kept at room temperature because the labels slowly turn gray. Label s Food labels are either paper or plastic. Most are paper because it is less expensive than plastic but paper does not handle moisture or frost well. This thermal transfer method provides all-around better quality than direct thermal printing. Ribbons use different combinations of wax and resin to print: wax only; wax and resin; resin only. Their qualities are: Wax ribbons are lowest in cost and prints on rougher surfaces such as paper but does not provide as high quality image resolution and smear and scratch resistance as resin. Resin ribbons are highest in cost and provide maximum image resolution and smear and scratch resistance but require plastic labels for optimum results. Wax/Resin ribbons are a mixture of the above.
