PIMSiS: Pipeline Integrity Management from Space Currently over 35% of all failures of gas transmission pipelines are discovered by the public and only 17% via inspection surveys by pipeline operators (source: EGIG 2010). PIMSiS intends to reverse these numbers Safe and cost-effective methodology to monitor changes in a m wide strip over the route of pipeline systems (change detection and ground movement) Early and effective detection of safety incidents, at lower overall inspection costs Our technology is based on images acquired with EO/SAR satellites like ESA s constellation Sentinel-1 (NB: free data!) and commercial satellites like TerraSAR-X and RadarSAT-2 IPR is secured in proprietary algorithms, packaged in dedicated software for tablets and laptop Oil and gas industry Operators of transmission pipelines Pipeline Integrity Management from Space reduces inspection costs significantly Monitoring assets from space identifies threats earlier than conventional condition monitoring methods and reduces the required resources for inspection More environmental friendly than traditional inspection methods, such as frequent helicopter flights Cost-effective compared to other surveying methods (e.g. helicopter flights) Orbital Eye BV
Structural Health Monitoring using InSAR Accurate deformation measurements on regional scale Data processing and data analysis are geared towards structural health monitoring for various civil and industrial engineering structures Deformation data can be easily integrated in management and planning cycle Methodology is cost-effective and sustainable SkyGeo (formerly Hansje Brinker) uses synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data acquired by low-orbiting satellites and applies InSAR to generate accurate deformation measurements In the coming years the cost of high resolution satellite data will decrease rapidly, making large-scale, high-density (space and time) deformation monitoring campaigns economically feasible Patents pending on our online data processing and analysis platform Railway deformation monitoring with InSAR (top) and deformation profile (bottom) SkyGeo, Structural health monitoring for civil and hydraulic infrastructures Urban infrastructures maintenance planning Energy transport networks maintenance planning Oil & Gas subsidence monitoring Satellite-based technologies, with their large footprints covering whole cities, provide a highly cost-effective way to generate precise quantitative data on the deformation of civil infrastructure By combining Space and Civil Engineering expertise, we are able to create applications specifically tailored to the civil engineering user base Users can explore the data and the derived (statistical) health information in an on-line environment In addition to this, the data is generated without health and safety issues or any other negative consequence of on-site presence (e.g. road closures) SkyGeo BV
Sensor-based Agribusiness Improved crop management advice by: Pro-actively acquiring all data that affect crop growth, using various sensors. The sensors are divided in imaging sensors (optical satellites and UAVs used to detect abnormal spatial patterns in the vegetation) and sampling sensors (soil and crop scanners, laboratory tests, field visits used to determine the cause of the variation) Integral pre-processing of all acquired data, knowledge and historical information. We apply specialised data processing protocols, which are based on state-of-the-art algorithms from histogram analysis, multi-dimensional regression and spatial correlation. Human interpretation of the pre-processed results by the advisor (and farmer) to formulate the final optimized advice Optical multi-spectral satellite imagery provides in a single image a moderate resolution large area overview, which cannot be constructed with acceptable costs using UAVs This moderate resolution is sufficient for the detection of spatial anomalies Thus satellite imagery is the ideal tool to quickly and costeffectively gather high-quality base information over large areas Not applicable Agriculture With Sensor-based Agribusiness improved crop management advice, we aspire for a sustainable improvement of product quality and increase of product yield in the arable farming sector. SmartFarming Consortium
Infrastructure monitoring with InSAR InSAR technology can reduce the cost of infrastructure maintenance and increase availability In combination with predictive modelling, InSAR offers possibilities to extend the safe useful life of existing infrastructure, such as rail, roads and other civil works We offer a complete analysis of InSAR data, from the initial stages of processing InSAR times series to the final product of an in-depth analysis InSAR accuracy for sensitive infrastructure can be improved by means of artificial reflectors Methodology is cost-effective and sustainable The InSAR technology requires space borne SAR data. Most often we make use of images from commercial satellites, such as TerraSAR-X Currently we are preparing to use data from ESA s Sentinel-1 satellites, which will provide free data Not applicable Left: Tower of the Oude Kerk in Delft (source: flickr.com) Right: Estimated horizontal (top) and vertical (bottom) displacements of the Oude Kerk TNO Subsidence monitoring Infrastructure monitoring Oil & Gas - Reservoir monitoring/modelling Extracting raw materials (e.g. salt) Groundwater management InSAR provides an efficient and cost-effective methodology for infrastructure monitoring At TNO, we have the knowledge and experience to develop tailored solutions to extract the maximum of InSAR observations, and provide the required analysis This will reduce inspection and maintenance cost and improve availability Timely warning to take preventive actions and to avoid further progressive damage In case of remote locations and/or offshore constructions, InSAR will be very useful to warn asset owners in time about unusual deformations

DDEM: A dynamic elevation model for the Netherlands The elevation of land and the level of the sea are not in a natural equilibrium In the Netherlands, over various scales the land is subsiding, while the sea level is rising due to a changing climate Still, all decisions are based on a single digital elevation model (DEM), which is considered to be constant To understand the behaviour of the land, to predict elevation in the future, and to make proper policy decisions, there is a dire need to make this DEM dynamic (DDEM) The technology to produce the DDEM is partially based on satellite services, such as GNSS, gravity, and SAR. The combination of all these products with conventional techniques will enable us to produce an optimal DDEM In the coming years the cost of high resolution satellite data will decrease rapidly, making large-scale, high-density (space and time) deformation monitoring campaigns economically feasible A patent has been investigated by TU Delft valorisation centre Land below the sea level: Subsiding lands and rising sea levels create a problem for the future The DDEM can be used by: Industry Governmental organizations Public transport sector Telecom companies Energy sector Water management Agro sector If successful, dynamic DEMs can be produced and continuously updated for all areas in the world Delft University of Technology
Rail monitoring from space Stability of railway tracks is a key safety and operational requirement Maintenance of thousands of kilometres of rail is laborious, expensive and reduces rail capacity Satellite radar interferometry provides an efficient and low-cost alternative for/addition to terrestrial surveys The technology can detect millimetres of displacement of the track, and report this on a weekly basis Additionally, the technology can provide thematic information on rail assets The technology relies on space assets such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites SAR satellites provide data with various resolutions, revisit intervals, and precisions, against marginal cost In the coming years the cost of high resolution satellite data will decrease rapidly, making large-scale, high-density (space and time) deformation monitoring campaigns economically feasible Patent is pending by the TU Delft valorisation centre Rail beds tend to deform due to unstable underground, higher speeds and increasing axle loads Rail transport: high-speed tracks international tracks When mature, the technology has the potential to be used operationally as a monitoring tool for rail infrastructure all over the world. It would make rail transport safer and cheaper In addition to this, the data is generated without health and safety issues or any other negative consequence of on-site presence (e.g. track closures) Delft University of Technology
