Logistics and Distribution in Kent Get your business moving in a highly connected county February 2018
Join Kent s network of business success within a vibrant transportation industry. Unlike any other county in the UK, Kent has access to a world class transportation network that plays a significant role in the movement of goods to Europe and beyond. The UK s transport industry has a value in excess of 60 billion and it is estimated that an average of 1,831 million tonnes of goods are lifted within the county every year. With High Speed 1, Eurostar, Eurotunnel, five sea ports including the Port of Dover and easy access to international airports Kent is highly connected by rail, road, sea and air and offers companies unrivalled access to domestic, European and international markets. The UK freight industry is one of the most liberated, deregulated and safest in the world and import/ export operations are well supported for any growing business. Logistics and Distribution 2

Fast paced and vibrant networks for moving goods With such a unique transportation proposition, Kent is home to some of the biggest players within the road transportation and logistics sector.
SUCCEEDING IN KENT Cost and accessibility to London and Europe are some of the major factors in why we chose to relocate to Kent. In less than 10 years, we ve seen the company grow from 3 to 42 people and a steady increase in profit and turnover. TPS Global Logistics Ltd As the UK s fixed link to Europe, the Channel Tunnel stretches 50km from Folkestone to Coquelle, near Boulogne, and its Shuttle services welcomed more than 2.6 million cars and 1.5 million trucks in The M25, M20 and M2 are also vital national links for the industry, with strong distribution, logistics and freight operations clustering around key motorway junctions, including the Dartford River Crossing. Investment in regional distribution centres, cold storage facilities, and general warehousing, makes Kent a strong, and cost-effective contender for the logistics and distribution sector, with distribution parks such as Aylesford (near Maidstone) and Crossways (next to the Dartford Crossing) an added form of support. Waitrose and Morrisons also have regional distribution centres in the county. Logistics and Distribution 9
SUCCEEDING IN KENT The 1Hub headquarters has enabled the business to expand its European network and Warehouse division due to central location and close proximity to London Gateway port and Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Europa Worldwide Group Europa The haulage company manages its Kent operation from a 30 million, 26,368sqm facility in Dartford and employs 600 people across 11 sites in the UK. In the last five years turnover has grown from 47 million to 100 million and the firm are proud to be a vital component in the supply chain of many businesses in the UK and abroad. Wincanton The largest British logistics firm provides supply chain consultancy and solutions to some of the world s most recognisable brands. They have over 17,500 employees with a 3,600-strong fleet of vehicles. They are based across more than 200 sites, three of which are located within Kent. Logistics and Distribution 10
Setting sail with Kent s strategically placed sea ports With Thamesport in Ramsgate, Peel Port London Medway and the Port of Dover terminal, Kent has specialist ports equipped for moving a range of commodities including automotive, forestry, dry and liquid bulks and energy products.
SUCCEEDING IN KENT The Port of Dover With 89 billion worth of trade each year, the Port of Dover handles 14% of all passengers to and from the UK (12.8 million passengers in 2013), along with 2.5 million tourist vehicles and 2.2 million road haulage vehicles. The Port contributes 320 million to the UK economy and supports over 22,000 jobs in the local economy. As one of the UK s strategic trading gateways, Dover Harbour Board are currently regenerating the Western Docks, creating a dedicated cargo terminal for fresh produce and other goods, and added-value distribution services. Logistics and Distribution 12
SUCCEEDING IN KENT Peel Ports Group The ports of Sheerness and Chatham form the core terminals of Peel Ports London Medway cluster, which stretch along 27.3 miles of the Rivers Medway and Swale. Peel Ports London Medway benefits from excellent connections to key markets and has a significant land footprint available for development. London Thamesport Owned and operated by Hutchison Ports, London Thamesport is a deep-water container port on the River Medway, serving the North Sea. Connected by rail and road, the port handles multi-purpose cargo, is one of only three UK deep-water capable of handling the largest container vessels and is perfectly placed to serve key markets. Logistics and Distribution 13
Access to a highly skilled and trained workforce Logistics is a significant employment sector in Kent & Medway accounting for 5% of the workforce. Employment in the sector is particularly concentrated in areas well served by motorways near London and the port towns.
SUCCEEDING IN KENT University of Kent With campuses in Canterbury, Medway and Tonbridge as well as internationally the university covers a wide range of logistics and supply chain management courses at both further and higher education level. The National Maritime Training Centre Part of North Kent College of Technology, this is one of the country s leading assessment centres for maritime qualifications in the transportation industry. 16 Why Kent?
WHY KENT? Kent makes business sense The business case for setting up or expanding in Kent has never been stronger. Positioned between London and Europe and experiencing impressive growth and regeneration, Kent offers unrivalled benefits that not only make good business sense but create the ideal place for your workforce and family to thrive in. Even better connected As the only UK county with the High Speed 1 rail network, Kent offers quick and convenient access to markets like no other. Businesses can access London in just 17 minutes and Paris and Brussels in under two hours. With the Port of Dover and five other seaports located within the county, import/export operations are well supported and International airports such as London Heathrow and Gatwick are easily accessible within an hour. Digital connectivity is also an asset in Kent, with 92% of homes and businesses having access to superfast broadband. Top quality, low costs In Kent, commercial property costs are up to 60% cheaper than London and 15% lower than the rest of the South East. Great value for money can also be seen across residential property with average house prices 33% cheaper than London. Kent also boasts two Enterprise Zones (Discovery Park and North Kent) offering business rate savings of up to 275,000 over five years and there are a number of funding support schemes available to support growing businesses. Discovery Park is the most successful Enterprise Zone in the UK. Logistics and Distribution 17
WHY KENT? The pick of the crop With a resident population of just over 1.8m, Kent and Medway is the largest of all of the English counties and provides access to a highly-skilled workforce. There are four top universities, including the University of Kent, ranked in the top 25 in the UK which provide a steady pipeline of graduates across key growth sectors each year. A further 25 universities are in an easily commutable 20 mile radius. The median salary in Kent is 4k lower than those in London, making the county extremely good value for money when it comes to finding the right staff for your business. For business, for work, for life Kent has just over 350 miles of coastline and with a third of the county designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty, it is perfect for people who value quality family time. Creative town Margate was recently voted one of the best places to live by the Sunday Times and the county as a whole has a rich heritage and its diversity offers an unrivalled lifestyle experience for everyone. With stunning sandy beaches, premium shopping experiences, a number of historic attractions, galleries, theatres, motor racing circuits and over 60 golf courses, it is the optimum destination to benefit from the perfect work/life balance.
