IATA 2nd RFID & Paperless Technical Operations Conference RFID for Logistics Track & Swiss International Air Lines Stefan Richard, Manager Technical Division Development November 17 th 2015
SWISS is one of Europe s leading premium airlines, a Star Alliance member and serving 100+ destinations proud member 16 million passengers 29 long-haul and 53 short-haul 106 destinations in 49 countries served from Zurich and Geneva 8245 motivated colleagues 2 RFID for Logistics Trak & Trace@ SWISS
SWISS Technical Division manages the whole fleet and is getting ready for two additional aircraft types in employees of which ca. 10% abroad Home base in ZRH & GVA with hangar space; 16 outstations worldwide with own personnel Engineering, Planning, Line Maintenance & Logistical Services in-house Base & Engine Maintenance as well as Components contracted Entry into service of two new aircraft types for SWISS in 2016 (B777 & CSeries) 3 RFID for Logistics Trak & Trace@ SWISS
SWISS ongoing RFID development Implementation of life vest and safety seal Maintenance A-Check Interval 1.5 Mt. Security seals C-Check interval 21 Mt. Condition and expiry date ISS Cleaning Cabin Search USA / UK Check safety seal Remove life vest Visual check of pocket for foreign objects Install life vests Implementation other emergency equipment's RFID for Logistics Trak & Trace@ SWISS
SWISS ongoing RFID development Implementation of RFID technology is a time and cost saving factor. Highest cost benefit can be achieved by coordinating all task by a single RFID scan. Short Range Aircraft cabin asset will be scanned during 850FH Long Range Aircraft cabin asset will be scanned during Cabin Search on US Routes 60% Short Range 40% Long Range MX cost inspection today Inspection with RFID Saving 75% RFID for Logistics Trak & Trace@ SWISS
RFID for Logistics Track & Zurich Airport SWISS Warehouse SWISS Line Maintenance Office Terminal E Terminal A Terminal B P3 P2 Distance: 3.1 km P1 Minimum Driving Time: 6:05 min OPC P6 W Hangar S E N
RFID for Logistics Track & Trace SWISS identified a significant benefit to increase the visibility of all serviceable and unserviceable material flow. An issue is the separate data flow for aircraft parts and the administration documentation flow. When a part is physically picked from the warehouse or removed from the aircraft its location is unknown in the system.
RFID for Logistics Track & Trace Delivered Parts from the warehouse to the requested hangar/gate location does not trigger a delivery confirmation in the system. Frequent mistake in the physical delivery position can cause a re-order from the purchaser. Such a sequence of activities can lead to a stock out information or an AOG situation. New prop points Existing drop points
RFID for Logistics Track & Trace To improve the current situation SWISS is looking into adding new drop point shelves at the terminal and in the hangars. All drop points including the warehouse entry shall be equipped with an RFID gate. P6 To replace the common part label with an RFID enable tag shall close the loop in the airport RFID infrastructure as location is part of the code. New RFID Gates Existing RFID Gates
SWISS goals and future development on RFID The benefit of a RFID infrastructure investment is a great cost improvement and expandable to other functions in the company. Wheels stock for the night shift to support the engineers with the logistic between store and hangar Seat covers, belts, nets and cabin curtains have a high potential to improve the washing process Smart Toolboxes for aircraft engineers Ground Support Equipment engine stand cradle & base and or QEC of leased engines. Passenger service improvement for check-in and baggage drop. Catering for special meals and other items 10 RFID for Logistics Trak & Trace@ SWISS
