1 Network Rail engineering asset base 20,000 miles of track (and drainage) 24,000 switches and crossings 29,000 bridges and tunnels Largest bridge builder in the world 830 signal boxes 2,500 stations 8,200 commercial properties Largest private landowner Second largest electricity network Largest purchaser of electricity Third largest Telecoms network 7,000 level crossings One of the largest engineering employers

2 Network Rail scale of expenditure In CP4 ( ) we spent: 12billion on replacing old assets 13billion on expanding the railway 5billion on maintaining the railway More than all 22 water companies combined More than all electricity distribution companies, and National Grid (UK electricity and gas transmission) combined p3

3 Britain relies on Rail Rail network is busier than ever. Compared with 10 years ago 40% more passengers 60% more freight Our major stations are busier than our major airports Railway is nearly full Investment in rail is essential for Britain s economy New railways will be built to modern standards High Speed 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

4 20-May-15 ORBIS Programme Overview Historically, Network Rail s Asset Management policy was conservative, and consequently, costly. A 300m asset information programme was initiated. Since 2012, ORBIS has equipped maintenance with hand-held devices, is building a digital model of the railway and has delivered decision support tools to help determine when to renew key assets. The improvements in Asset Management enabled by the programme will drive the evolution of Network Rail s Asset Policy, helping it to manage risk differently. 5
