After a strong 2014, we have started this year in a sprint, celebrating accomplishments and meeting with customers to continually gain a better understanding of their business needs. We ended 2014 with the always-exciting Intermodal Show in Rotterdam where we were pleased to announce new technology in the form of the MAGNUM PLUS Optima active controlled atmosphere solution, a passive refrigeration system concept, and new choices in refrigerants. All were received warmly and we re excited to continue discussing these options in I ve been spending quite a bit of time on the road in In between tradeshows (see page 8 for highlights), my travels included a trip to our marine parts distribution center in the Republic of Panama, which serves customers in Central and South America. Personally visiting our operations helps give me a greater picture of our processes and services. Here we are at a Dole banana plantation. In addition, I was privileged to visit a banana and pineapple plantation in Costa Rica in February as part of meetings with customer Dole, one of the largest producers of bananas worldwide. Gino Ansaldi, our resident fruit expert (aka sales and service manager), accompanied me. The entire trip was educational and impressive as I gained a better understanding of how our equipment is helping Dole maintain quality products and protect shelf life of sensitive products such as bananas. Look for more on this visit in the next 20/40. My next stop brings me to Intermodal Asia. I look forward to renewing my contacts with our valued Asian customers and dealers and hope our evening event in Shanghai will match last year s inaugural event! I will report more on that in the next edition. Putting the Freeze on the Ebola Outbreak One year ago, most of the world did not know what the Ebola disease was, nor how quickly or easily that it could spread.

4 Putting the Freeze on the Ebola Outbreak One year ago, most of the world did not know what the Ebola disease was, nor how quickly or easily that it could spread. That changed, nearly overnight, as an Ebola outbreak reached crisis proportions in West Africa with cases being reported around the world. As of January, World Health Organization (WHO) figures showed nearly 22,000 cases of Ebola in nine countries in the past year since the epidemic began in Guinea. This includes nearly 8,700 deaths. Pharmaceutical companies quickly jumped into the race to develop an Ebola vaccination, with several currently in clinical trials to prove safety and effectiveness. Thermo King is proud to be playing a small role in the fight against Ebola through the unique, deep-freezing capabilities of its SuperFreezer container unit. According to Patrick Tyrrell of Ireland-based CRS Pharma Solutions, While proper storage and transport temperatures have always been crucial in the pharmaceutical industry, it is vital in new products as the reaction of various components during temperature fluctuations are often unknown. For this reason, companies want to store the product as cold as possible. Thermo King s SuperFreezer was the answer as it holds temperatures as low as -60 C. In business since 1992, CRS Pharma Solutions understands the unique shipping and storage needs of pharmaceuticals, and the stakes involved. Naturally, product values are very high. Lost loads can cost millions of dollars, explained Patrick. More than that, especially with trial products, is the time investment. It often takes months to manufacture one active ingredient within a developmental vaccine or medicine, and often it s in a limited quantity. If that component is compromised due to inadequate storage temperatures, a delay in vaccine availability can occur. While that might hurt a company s bottom line, the delay could also mean loss of human life; especially in an epidemic such as Ebola. CRS, which has assisted with other world-wide epidemic scares including the Swine Flu and offers temperature validation services to all customers, takes that reality and the responsibility to service the Relationships are key in this industry, said Patrick. We recommended the SuperFreezer because of how low they can be set. The customer needed them by the end of February to coordinate with its trial vaccine production schedule, said Patrick. Working with Thermo King representatives, CRS was able to move quickly. Coordination of box builders in China, SuperFreezer component availability, and necessary ship times all came together to make the customers deadline. Patrick, along with a Thermo King service representative, was there to greet the shipment and make the inspections. This sometimes delves deeper into best practice loading procedures, refrigeration concepts, industry-specific needs such as fresh transport, pharmaceuticals or seafood, and the importance of an uninterrupted cold chain (farm to fork). Thermo King offers all types of customer education, from informal to formal. One recent example was coordinated for Kuehne + Nagel, a global major freight-forwarder and long-time customer based in Germany. The presentation was centered on the transportation of pharmaceuticals in containers. Topics covered included: Pharmaceutical transport via reefer containers Basic transport refrigeration concepts Best practice procedures to ensure success Importance of generator set use More than 50 customers from Kuehne + Nagel were in attendance at the Madrid, Spain presentation, along with several pharmaceutical customers. The purpose was to educate the end customer, the real user of our equipment, on what our reefer unit can and cannot do, as well as why Thermo King s technology is ideally suited for pharmaceutical transport, explained Gino Ansaldi, Thermo King sales and service manager. This pharmaceutical-focused collaboration with Kuehne + Nagel not only provided their customers with important facts to help them make fleet decisions but armed Kuehne + Nagel personnel with the knowledge and information they need to offer greater customer support in the region and attract new business. A recent training for WAN HAI vessel engineers in Guangzhou offered technical training for the customer and feedback for Thermo King. Spending time with the end users in training situations is very valuable for us, said Johnny Chi, Thermo King field service and parts manager in China. One, we make sure they are using our products correctly. Second, we get feedback on our design based on real-life usage. In this particular training, participants confirmed they like the MAGNUM PLUS user-friendly interface. Moreover, a chief engineer inquired about our low power consumption, wanting to understand why only two generator sets were needed to keep 100 Thermo King units running while the competitor required three gensets for the same number of units. 7 Reliable Refrigeration Unplugged New passive technology delivers continuous cold chain operations for fresh produce Thermo King s new passive refrigeration technology is an autonomous concept for intermodal applications that combines the best of intermodal transportation: the operational simplicity of a dry container with the cooling capacity and functional benefits of a reefer. With no energy supply needed during operation, the Thermo King-patented concept offers the utmost flexibility in global transport. How it Works Uniquely, this system uses a food-grade eutectic solution to store thermal energy for self-sufficient operation during transport. With no need for plugging and unplugging, like in the case of a conventional reefer, passive refrigeration ensures the cargo is transported at the right temperature and humidity conditions to preserve the quality of fresh harvested produce, regardless of the region, time or operator. This feature gives the cargo owners access to new markets with limited or inadequate conventional reefer services. This game-changing technology offers: Continuous cold chain operations. The autonomous operation for sea transport and post-harvest applications enables uninterrupted temperature control for reliable transport of fresh meat, fruit and vegetables, pharmaceuticals and flowers. Optimal quality and reduced weight-loss. Natural convection eliminates the need for forced ventilation, thereby maintaining the desired humidity levels and preserving the freshness and weight of perishables. Reduced cost of ownership. Flexibility for Access to New Markets The new Passive Refrigeration concept has been tested by several customers including EMS Seven Seas, a global marine and offshore supply and service provider, and Van Oers United, an internationally active supplier and producer of year-round fresh vegetables. We tested the new passive refrigeration technology from Thermo King delivering food and supplies to oil rigs in remote offshore areas, said Alex Trincado, commercial director at EMS Seven Seas. In an area of inadequate reefer facilities, this technology enabled us to simplify the transportation process and offer our customers an even more efficient, reliable and sustainable cold supply chain. Erwin Franken, the manager of Van Oers United s Logistics Department, said, Global exportation of perishable goods is complex and demanding. To be successful, we need innovative technologies that give us peace of mind and offer simplicity, reduced cost and the same performance levels we are accustomed to. We tested this new technology transporting fresh produce from Morocco to the Netherlands. Thermo King has delivered a new way to move goods all the way from harvesting in the fields to end consumers plates without the loss in quality, taste or weight. This unique technology concept has already been shown at various tradeshows including Intermodal 2014 in Rotterdam and FRUIT LOGISTICA in Berlin, attracting much interest.
