I m excited to connect with you to hear about your business successes and challenges, and to share Thermo King s continued commitment to delivering exceptional products and services. No matter the market, Thermo King s goal is to provide customer-focused solutions that protect your assets over time. This includes continual enhancements, driven by quality and reliability, which improve equipment performance and efficiency in the field throughout the entire lifecycle of the fleet. 02 This edition of 20/40 offers several examples of how we are doing just that. Our selection of R-452A as the next-generation refrigerant for our reefers was all about protecting customer investments and giving them choices. R-452A has been working in the field as both a drop-in and in new reefers and has proven its ability to meet environmental needs without compromising reefer performance. Hear from two customers who are making the switch on page 4. You ll also read about our new energy logging software, which will help fleets quantify energy consumption and sustainability performance of MAGNUM PLUS reefers. In addition, we share some of the great work our team is doing in the field with training and service to ensure customers and dealer partners around the world are armed for success. Our partnership and commitment to your needs is ongoing, and our Thermo King team works hard to maintain and build those relationships. The Connecting with Customers story highlights some of the larger tradeshows that we attended this year. In closing, I have to share that I m very proud of our entire team. Their passion and dedication to providing the best solutions and service to you is unrivaled, as is their collective experience in this industry. In fact, two major milestones in 2017 illustrate this Arlo Eslinger, our global service manager is celebrating 45 years, and Mike Roche, service manager in North America, has been with us for 25 years. 3 MARINE REFRIGERANT CHOICES WHAT S RIGHT FOR YOUR FLEET? O pinions on refrigerant continue to be a prevalent discussion topic throughout our industry, especially as the predictions of limited availability and subsequent pricing increases are coming to fruition in many areas around Europe. This is exactly why Thermo King did the refrigerant research and testing three years ago said Peter Robertson, Portfolio leader for Thermo King Marine, Rail, Air and Bus. We wanted our customers to have refrigerant options when they were ready for their existing and new fleets. And that s what we ve given them with R-452A. LEADING THE WAY Giving customers the choice meant identifying the next-generation refrigerant replacement for Marine reefers. In 2014, R-452A proved to it could meet the high standards Thermo King required for its customers. Namely, it had to be a no-hassle, drop-in solution that would offer environmental compliance and identical reefer performance. In other words, it had to protect customer investments and minimize the effects on current reefer fleets. Thermo King chose R-452A so that we could help customers carefully plan and prepare for the very dynamic refrigerant situation that we are now in. We chose R-452A to demonstrate that we are here to support customers through the current refrigerant transition, and that we are here for future developments as well explained Robertson. THE REALITY As anticipated, the commercial playing field in Europe is changing quickly for the industry due to refrigerant supply. As with R-134a (see sidebar), R-404A hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant availability is dwindling and expected to be downright scarce beginning January Hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) blend refrigerant R-452A has already proven its performance and short atmospheric life as the replacement for Thermo King s current MAGNUM PLUS reefers. And according to current European and United States Environmental Protection Agency rulings, R-452A will offer the marine industry compliance for the foreseeable future. The good news for Thermo King customers is that R-452A s performance is confirmed in real-world applications; it has been running flawlessly in many fleets who did not want to wait for their hand to be forced to make a refrigerant switch. Indeed, our straight drop-in refrigerant for existing units has already been verified and today, new reefer orders specified with R-452A are being placed by customers like TITAN and DFDS. We wanted our customers to have refrigerant options when they were ready for their existing and new fleets. And that s what we ve given them with R-452A. 03

4 L ong-time Copenhagen-based Thermo King customer TITAN Containers runs a worldwide reefer fleet and for now, is making its refrigerant choices on new orders based on where each reefer is running. We ve placed a couple of recent MAGNUM PLUS orders, said Layland Barker, managing director, TITAN Containers. In one group of reefers that is being used in Europe, we specified R-452A as we know the refrigerant is readily available. In the other group that will be used worldwide, we specified R-404A as availability of R-452A is still unclear in some of the countries we service. TITAN CONTAINERS For now, it s a matter of ensuring availability. Whenever possible, TITAN will order new units with R-452A. We believe that protecting our planet s environment is the responsibility of all of us. If the resources are available and it is economically viable, then we should all do our utmost to limit continued and/or future damage to the atmosphere. 04 Aside from doing the right thing, Barker points out that there will be economical benefits to TITAN stating that sooner rather than later, R-452A refrigerant will have to be dropped into existing fleets that operate in countries that apply F-Gas legislation, as in the EU. As a major owner of MAGNUM PLUS refrigeration reefers, I expect TITAN to commence a retro-fit program with R-452A on our entire MAGNUM PLUS fleet operating in Europe beginning in 2018 as units become available between deployments, said Barker. We know the MAGNUM PLUS well, and we believe in Thermo King; we have no concerns about the efficiency and reliability of operations with this alternative refrigerant.

5 DFDS A European shipping and logistics solutions provider since 1866, DFDS successfully combines short sea shipping and logistics in Northern Europe and is committed to their customers success. Staying on top of the changing refrigerant requirements is part of that. We have been a Thermo King customer for more than a decade, with some of our units dating back to 2003, said Claus Thamdrup, general manager Intermodal Equipment for DFDS. Approximately 85 percent of our reefer container fleet is Thermo King and we trust that their recommended refrigerant is the best solution for our reefers. On top of that, price and availability all play into our decisions. DFDS recently purchased 70 new Thermo King MAGNUM PLUS reefers with R-452A. The refrigerant is not entirely new to the company, however, as they already run a fleet of Thermo King truck and trailer units with the refrigerant. The replacement of choice is R-513A, another HFO CHOICES 05 A s refrigerant availability, pricing and legislation mandates fluctuate throughout Europe, Thermo King will continue to offer a refrigerant choice to customers. We ve had manufacturing readiness on R-452A for several years, and we run both R-404A and R-452A refrigerants at the factory to provide our customers the kind of selection they need to best fit their fleet and location, said Robertson. As indicated from customers like Titan and DFDS, requirements vary. While refrigerant pricing and a growing number of environmental pledges are beginning to drive decision making for some customers, legislation remains stable. Customers just have to decide what s right for them. WHAT ABOUT R-134A REEFERS? Competitive units currently utilizing R-134a refrigerant are facing a similar situation. Refrigerant availability is becoming scarce due to the EU MAC Directive, which has forced an 80 percent phase-down of R-134a in refrigerant that Thermo King has previously researched and introduced in other sectors of transportation, primarily in North America. Again, current European and United States Environmental Protection Agency rulings indicate compliance of R-513A for the foreseeable future but this refrigerant is not yet as widely available as R-452A in EMEA for use in Marine.

6 KNOWLEDGE IS POWER New MAGNUM PLUS Feature Puts Energy Consumption Data at Your Fingertips 06 T hermo King is pleased to offer enhanced energy logging software capabilities for MAGNUM PLUS reefers with the leading MP-4000 controller. This latest, value-added feature will be standard on all new units beginning in 2018 and will help fleets quantify energy consumption and sustainability performance while effectively tailoring their services to meet customer needs. From the beginning, our technology was built to deliver the highest efficiency, maximum cooling capacity and lowest total cost of ownership. The ability to add a power logging feature through software enhancements in our controller puts valuable data directly into the user s fingertips, providing energy consumption details for trips and total reefer life and giving fleets the ability to optimize operations and offerings accordingly, said Brian O Donoghue, product manager, Thermo King Marine. The power logging feature in the MAGNUM PLUS helps fleets better understand how various commodities, routes and operating profiles affect the amount of energy consumed by the reefer, and ultimately the cost associated with that energy. Fleets can then use that knowledge to adjust shipping practices and customer offerings in order to meet efficiency and operational goals. The feature gives customers the ability to see the total power usage of a reefer, measured in kw per hour. The power draw is logged and viewable from both our leading MP-4000 controller and the standard download file, explained O Donoghue. Via Controller The current power draw is tracked continually through the controller and users can easily view total trip power draw data including the total hours/days of operation and average kw per hour consumed by selecting the trip start date. The total power draw of the reefer over its lifetime can also be viewed at any time with data going back to the reefer in-service date or the date of the power logging software retrofit. Via Download Through the LogVIEW tool, users are able to view the power draw of the reefer every hour or other specified measurement period, through the standard download file. Data points included in each data log file are standardized and include instant power draw and cumulative data from trip and the lifetime of the unit. The new power logging feature will be built into all new MAGNUM PLUS reefers beginning in 2018 and are retrofittable for all existing MAGNUM PLUS reefers through an easy software update. 7 CONNECTING WITH CUSTOMERS Industry Tradeshows are Important Stops for Thermo King Marine Team W hile industry tradeshows are always a valuable opportunity to build relationships with customers and suppliers, they are even more important when going through challenging times. Especially in close-knit industries like Marine. No doubt that our industry has weathered some tough times the past couple of years, said Michel Gadron, commercial leader, Thermo King Global Marine. These tradeshows are a great way to connect, share concerns and support, and listen to customers to learn more about their needs and what issues keep them awake during the night. It s our opportunity to discuss important issues like the reliability of the cold chain and the service network, as well as refrigerant and technologies of the future. These events are the perfect place to demonstrate our commitment to the industry and highlight our solutions. To that end, the Thermo King team took full advantage of major tradeshows throughout From Shanghai, China to Sao Paulo, Brazil, and to Hong Kong, Spain, Long Beach, California, and of course, the culminating year-end Intermodal show in Amsterdam, our team has been out in full force, and ready to serve. MARCH Intermodal Asia 2017 In its fourth year, Intermodal Asia brought together the global intermodal industry in Shanghai and welcomed a record number of more than 8,500 visitors, 160 global exhibitors and 85 guest speakers. The Thermo King team focused on key products of interest for the Asian region namely the MAGNUM PLUS container reefer, our specialty, deep-freeze SUPERFREEZER container reefer, and our SG Series of generator sets including the clip-on model. There were also several customers who featured our MAGNUM PLUS unit with their refrigerated containers in their own booths, so we had extra visibility throughout the show, said Karen Chan, sales coordinator. Taking advantage of the close proximity to Thermo King s Wujiang marine product manufacturing facility, the team hosted a customer tour to highlight our class-leading, quality production processes. 07 SEPTEMBER TIMELINE

APRIL Intermodal South America H ong Kong, Asia s World City and gateway to China, once again played host to the Asia Fruit Logistica show. The annual exhibition, held in conjunction with Cool Logistics Asia brings together growers, traders, importers, and shippers of fruits from all over the world and nearly doubled in size over We have noticed participation from a growing number of shipping companies at this tradeshow to support the cold chain logistics for moving perishables, said JJ Foo, sales director, Asia Pacific. 08 T he Intermodal South America tradeshow has been a tradition for more than 20 years for logistics and shipping operators in Latin America. Held in São Paulo, Brazil, Thermo King Marine highlighted its SGSM-3000 generator set. This genset, part of the SG Series range, is helping to maintain the cold chain of products that are exported and imported in marine refrigerated containers, said Rafael Gonzalez, Thermo King field service and parts manager for Latin America. Participants are equally represented from fruit growing regions throughout the world. We are there to meet with our customers, gain a better understanding of the challenges they face in transporting certain fruits, and also lend our support on any technical questions that may arise from using our equipment for the perishable cold chain. Attending the Asia Fruit Logistica exhibition from Thermo King Marine were: JJ Foo, Duygu Seker, Michel Gadron, Karen Chan, Johnny Chi, Horace Lao, Arlo Eslinger, and Andrew Cooper. The product is now being sold directly from our offices in Brazil. It is getting much interest from customers in the animal protein market, which is growing fast in Brazil. 9 LATE SEPTEMBER Cool Logistics Global S everal Thermo King Marine delegates participated in the annual Cool Logistics Global conference in late September. Designed to connect perishable cargo owners with cold chain logistics and transport professionals from around the world, Cool Logistics Global always attracts a nice crowd. This conference provides an opportunity to see key market trends and operation best practices for the international movement of chilled and frozen cargoes by air, land and sea, said Gulsah Metinoz, sales manager for Thermo King Marine. SEPTEMBER IANA Intermodal Expo O rganized by the Intermodal Association of North America and held in Long Beach, California, the IANA EXPO brought the industry together around dialogue, education and connections that move intermodal forward. Demonstrating its global capabilities across product lines, Thermo King Marine collaborated with our North American truck and trailer team to showcase our generator set platform, specifically the SG-4000 range. Our gensets provides independent, dependable electrical power needed to keep refrigeration units up-and-running during intermodal transit, said Mike Stark, sales director North America and global training manager, Thermo King Marine. The SG-4000 is fully Tier IV compliant without any modifications and its compliancy exceeds the toughest global regulations, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in North America, the California Air Resource Board (CARB), Environment Canada, and the European Environmental Agency (EEA). 09 The backdrop for this year s conference was Spain s Port of Algeciraz, the largest reefer port in Spain and the gateway to and from Africa. And Morocco is only 35 minutes away by ship. It proved to be a nice setting to meet with customer and the industry while discussing market conditions, which continue to be complex and unpredictable, said Metinoz. More importantly, it was a chance for our team to discuss how Thermo King products and services are poised to offer real solutions for developing Mega Trends such as population growth, food safety, extreme weather, and global connectivity. 10 TRAINING AND EXPANDING NETWORK OF SUPPORT T hermo King has always travelled far and wide to ensure customers have the training and service needed to be successful. From risk management, to equipment operation and best practice sharing, our team has done it all, said Arlo Eslinger, Thermo King Marine Global Service manager. They travel the world, to places many people have not heard of, to help our customers run an efficient, problem-free fleet that ensures proper temperatures to protect cargo no matter what type of product is being hauled. It s what we do because we know that our customers success is our success, explained Arlo, a 45-year veteran on the Thermo King team. 10 One recent example involved customer Swire Shipping, which ships tuna out of Honiara, the capital city of the Solomon Islands, a country in Oceania located east of Papua New Guinea in the Solomon Sea. Honiara sits on Guadalcanal, one of the largest islands in the country. This is a remote area, making it difficult to get trained service representatives on location to maintain the reefer equipment, said Andrew Cooper, sales and service manager for Thermo King Marine. Our MAGNUM PLUS reefer is very popular in the region due to the low temperatures it can achieve in the high ambient temperatures of the Pacific According to Andrew, The low temperatures are vital for Swire, which loads the tuna directly into their shipping containers that are positioned on the wharf adjacent to incoming fishing boats. To ensure the product was loaded properly and kept at required temperatures, the Thermo King team offered training to Swire s local staff on MAGNUM PLUS operation as well as loading procedures and best practices. We split the training into two days in order to keep class size down; we had 24 students the first day, and 23 students the next, said Andrew.

11 New Thermo King Marine Dealer/Service Centre W hile customer training in remote areas is key to growing markets as it ensures proper use of equipment, safe transport of temperature-sensitive loads, economic success for our customers, and ultimately, happy end customers throughout the world. The Honiara training for Swire has resulted in additional training for one company which will get them one stop closer to becoming an approved Thermo King Marine Dealer and Service Centre. We are very excited to welcome an official Thermo King Marine dealer to our network as it will offer further support in this region for customers like Swire Shipping, said Andrew. Swire Shipping is the brand name for all liner shipping services operated by The China Navigation Company Pte Ltd (CNCo). Swire Shipping has provided niche, regional, multipurpose shipping services since 1883 when CNCo established liner services in Australia. There are more than certified Thermo King Marine service dealers throughout the world. The Thermo King Marine team conducts an average of customer trainings each year, and has held sessions on every continent and more than different countries.
