4 1. UNPACKING SPAA-214-R1 1.1 PROCEDURE 1. UNPACKING 1.1 PROCEDURE 1. Open the Carton. 2. Take out the TRST-A15 printer and remove the polyfoam. 3. Take both the TRST-A15 Quick Reference manual and TRST-A1X Safety manual out of the bottom of the carton. 4. Place the TRST-A15 printer on a level surface. Confirm that the TRST-A15 Quick Reference Manual and TRST-1X Safety Manual is not missing. NOTE: Keep the original carton and Polyfoam for future transportation of the TRST-A15 printer. 1-1
5 1. UNPACKING SPAA-214-R1 1.3 POWER CORD 1.3 POWER CORD As the power cord is not supplied with this printer, locally purchase the power cord which meets the following standard. For USA and Canada: Power Supply Cord UL and CSA approved, type SVT, 18/3AWG, rated min. 125V, 10A Attached Plug and Appliance Coupler UL and CSA approved, molded on type. The plug is parallel-blade grounding type, NEMA 5-15P configuration. The appliance coupler is Female configuration. Both attachment plug and appliance coupler are rated minimum 125V, 10A. For European countries: Power Supply Cord HAR or domestic approved where the equipment is used, Type H05VV-F, rated minimum 250V, 10A Attachment Plug and Appliance Coupler Domestic approved where the equipment is used, molded on type, having grounding terminal rated minimum 250V, 10A. The appliance coupler is Female configuration. For the other countries: Domestic approved, having suitable electrical ratings and characteristics for the end-product specifications and use. The table below shows the sample of domestic safety approval markings. Major safety approval marking (as of June, 2003) 1-2
6 2. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE SPAA-214-R1 2.1 CONNECTING THE TRST-A15 TO THE POS TERMINAL 2. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE WARNING! 1. Turn the POS terminal OFF before connecting the TRST-A15 printer. 2. Plug the TRST-A15 power cord into the AC outlet on the wall for power supply. Do not obtain the AC power from the AC outlet of the POS terminal such as ST-A10, ST-7000, etc., because the rush current at the TRST-A15 power on may exceed the rating of the power switch of the POS terminal. Failure to do this may shorten the life of the power switch of the POS terminal. 2.1 CONNECTING THE TRST-A15 TO THE POS TERMINAL CAUTION! 1. Use a locally purchased power cord which meets the standard. 2. Firmly plug the AC adapter cable and the power cord. 1. Turn the printer power OFF. 2. Insert the power cord into the AC inlet. 7 2. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE SPAA-214-R1 2.1 CONNECTING THE TRST-A15 TO THE POS TERMINAL 3. Connect and secure the interface cable to the interface connector in the correct orientation. Serial interface: Secure the connector with the screws. USB interface: Securely insert the connector until a positive click is heard. Parallel interface: Secure the connector with the locking tabs. Connect the interface cable to the TOSHIBA POS terminal or Personal Computer, and then plug in the power cord to the AC outlet. Carton Interface Cable 2-2
8 2. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE SPAA-214-R1 2.2 CONNECTING THE DRAWER 2.2 CONNECTING THE DRAWER WARNING! 1. The solenoid included in the drawer to be connected should have the minimum of 36 ohm resistance. Under-specified solenoid may cause a machine failure. 2. The output current of the drawer should not exceed 0.8A, as there is a risk of a machine failure. 3. The drawer interface connector is exclusively for connecting a drawer. Do not connect a phone line or any other cables than the specified drawer cable. Doing so may cause a failure of the phone line and the printer. Connectable drawers must meet the following conditions. The drawer which includes the Drawer Drive Circuit (DC 24V specification). The drawer which has 6-pin modular connector. 9 3. DISASSEMBLY AND REASSEMBLY SPAA-214-R1 3.1 MAINTENANCE TOOLS 3. DISASSEMBLY AND REASSEMBLY WARNING! 1. Disconnect the power cord before disassembling the printer. 2. The print head becomes very hot while printing. Never touch the print head to avoid getting burned. CAUTION! 1. Do not disassemble or adjust the machine as far as it functions properly. Particularly, do not loosen any screws unless it is necessary. 2. After the printer is disassembled and reassembled, be sure to check that there is no abnormality before turning the power ON. 3. During maintenance, be careful not to leave the parts uninstalled or the screws un-tightened inside the printer. 4. When handling the thermal head or electronic components, do not use gloves or other aids, which may build up static electricity. 5. When disassembling or reassembling the printer, check the wires and cables for any damage. Do not run them into a narrow space or set them in improper positions. 3.1 MAINTENANCE TOOLS Philips-head screwdrivers Any small flat object (For example: tweezers or a metal ruler) 3-1

NOTE: When removing the screw, be careful not to touch the print head elements with the screwdriver. M3x8 double sems screw Cover Top 2. Remove the hopper by lifting it upwards. Hopper 3-5

The connecting tabs in the front will snap open allowing you to slide the Cover Top out. NOTE: Be gentle when removing the Cover Top as the connecting tabs may break if excessive force is used. 15 3. DISASSEMBLY AND REASSEMBLY SPAA-214-R1 3.2 DISASSEMBLING THE MAIN BODY Removing the Interface Card 1. Move the 2 screws which secure the Interface card to the Cover Bottom. Interface Card 3x8 s-tite screw Cover Bottom 3x6 s-tite screw 2. Use a small flat object (for example: tweezers or metal ruler) to lift the Interface Card out from the Cover Bottom. Pull upwards at the other end of the interface card bracket simultaneously to lift the interface card out. Lift up 3-7

This step is only possible after completion of section Do not attempt to remove the Main PCB Cage before removing the Interface Card. Doing so may cause serious damage to both the Main PCB and interface card. 1. Remove the four 3x6 s-tite screws which secure the PCB Cage to the Print Block x6 s-tite screws 1 Print Block PCB Cage Switch Sheet NOTE: When reassembling the PCB Cage, do not forget to attach the Switch Sheet. 2. Tilt the PCB Cage around 20 degrees to access the connectors. PCB Cage Print Block 3-8

Unplug the wire connecting the Print Block to the Paper Low Sensor. You may now proceed to remove the Silver Earth Wire by unscrewing the 3x6 s-tite screw connected to the earth plate. NOTE: When removing the screw, be careful not to touch the print head elements with the screwdriver. M3x8 double sems screws 3. Tilt the Print Block approximately 20 degrees forward to release it from the catch connecting it to the Cover Bottom. You may then slide the Print Block from the Cover Bottom. The PCB Stay may now be removed from the Print Block in the direction indicated by the arrow. 3x6 p-tite NOTE: PCB Stay 3x6 p-tite Print Block Please note the following when reassembling the Print Block. After attaching the Print Block to the Cover Bottom, make sure the Cutter Arm is at the position where it blocks the Cutter Home Position Sensor. Otherwise, the Cover may not be firmly closed and the Upper Platen may damage the Cutter Blade. If the Cutter Arm is not at the position as shown in the photo, rotate the Cutter Gear to adjust the Cutter Arm position. Cutter Blade Cutter Arm Cutter Gear Cutter Home Position Sensor 3-11

22 3. DISASSEMBLY AND REASSEMBLY SPAA-214-R1 3.2 DISASSEMBLING THE MAIN BODY Disassembling the Bottom Frame 1. Remove the Earth Plate and Earth Wires (x2) by lifting it upwards. Remove the Power switch block from the Cover Bottom by using any small flat object (for example: tweezers or metal ruler) to bend it slightly above the emboss as shown in the picture below. 23 3. DISASSEMBLY AND REASSEMBLY SPAA-214-R1 3.3 REASSEMBLY PROCEDURE 3. Gently remove the wire from the wire holder before removing the Power Button Block. Slide the Power Button Block in the direction shown. The Power Button Block can then be removed from the Cover Bottom. Wire Holder 4. Turn the Cover Bottom around with the base facing upwards and release the Cable Holder by removing a 3X8 p-tite screw. 5. Remove the two 3X8 p-tite screws to release the Water Guide from the Cover Bottom. 24 4. DIP SWITCH FUNCTION SPAA-214-R1 4.1 DIP SWITCH SETTINGS 4. DIP SWITCH FUNCTION 4.1 DIP SWITCH SETTINGS The DIP switches are located on the PC board at the bottom of the printer. They are used to set the RS-232C parameters as shown in the following tables. The switches are used to put the printer into various modes for printer configuration set up. 25 4. DIP SWITCH FUNCTION SPAA-214-R1 4.2 DATASCOPE MODE 4.2 DATASCOPE MODE Datascope Mode allows the user to test the printer s communications. When in Datascope Mode the printer receives all communications, but instead of executing the commands it prints them out on receipt paper as hexadecimal numbers in the order received. For example, the ASCII character A is printed as the hexadecimal number 41 an so on. To run the Datascope Mode: 1. After you have enabled the Datascope Mode through the Configuration Menu, exit the Configuration Menu. 6. Run a transaction from the host computer. All commands and data sent from the host computer will be printed as hexadecimal numbers as shown in the illustration : A : A B C D E F G H I J K L To exit the Datascope Mode: 1. Enter the Configuration Menu again 2. Disable the Datascope Mode 3. Exit the Configuration Menu The printer is in Normal Mode and can communicate with the host computer. 4-2
26 5. SELF TEST PRINT SPAA-214-R1 5.1 SELF TEST 5. SELF TEST PRINT 5.1 SELF TEST To perform the printer self test, use the Mfg Adjustment menu feature. This feature prints instructions on the receipt for selecting any type of print pattern needed. CAUTION! Be extremely careful when changing any of the printer settings to avoid changing other settings that might affect the performance of the printer. 1. Set DIP switch 1 to ON, DIP switch 2 to ON. DIP Switch O N 1 2 Switch 2 is shown in the OFF position 2. Power on the printer while holding the Paper Feed Button. The printer will print the Current Setting Form, then cuts the paper to print the Mfg Adjustment Menu. 3. If you do not hold the Paper Feed Button while power up the printer, it will go to Online Mode. The printer prints the resident character set in standard pitch continuously. When Rolling ASCII Print (Rcpt) is selected, printer prints the following menu. After selection of the printing side, test print will start. ** SELECT PRINTING SIDE? Front Side Only > 1 Click Back Side Only > 2 Click Double Side > 3 Click Enter code, then hold Button DOWN at least 1 second to validate Press the Paper Feed Button to stop the test. Press the Paper Feed Button to start or stop the test. ** SELECT PRINTING SIDE? The printer prints the 12.5%, 25%, 50% and 100% duty original pattern. When Duty Check Print (Rcpt) is selected, printer prints the following menu. After selection of the printing side, test print will start. Press the Paper Feed Button to start or stop the test. ** SELECT PRINTING SIDE? Front Side Only > 1 Click Back Side Only > 2 Click Double Side > 3 Click Enter code, then hold Button DOWN at least 1 second to validate. Press the Paper Feed Button to continue or stop the test. TROUBLESHOOTING 6.1 TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURE When trouble occurs, confirm it s phenomenon, locate a defective part in accordance with Section 6.2 of the Troubleshooting Guide, and troubleshoot as described below. Phenomenon: Find the corresponding phenomenon from this column. If there are Multiple phenomena, take all the corresponding items into consideration. This may indicate a hidden faulty part. Cause: Listing the probable causes as many as possible. Guess the cause Of the problem out of them and take check method to find the cause. Check Method: Describing the check methods to specify the cause of the problem. Solution: Follow the solution described in this column. Following the above-mentioned procedure allows for more efficient troubleshooting with fewer errors in judgment. 6.2 TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE Power Supply Failure Phenomenon Cause Check method Solution The AC adapter is not connected Connect the specified AC adapter. No power is supplied. (Power lamp does not light.) The fuse has blown. Check whether any unspecified AC adapter is used. Use the specified AC adapter, and replace the Main PCB. Printing Failure Phenomenon Cause Check method Solution No Printing Faulty connection of the print head connector. Void Printing (Paper comes out, but no characters are printed on the paper) Blurred or uneven print Faulty connection of the print head connector. Foreign object is attached to the print head. Check the connection of the print head connector. Check the connection of the print head connector. Check whether any foreign objects are attached to the print head. Connect the print head connector properly. Or replace the Main PCB and/or Print Block. Connect the print head connector properly. Or replace the Main PCB and/or Print Block. Clean print head with cotton swab or soft cloth slightly moistened with ethyl alcohol. Faulty print head Replace the Print Block. 6-1

Check whether any foreign objects are attached to the Paper Low sensor. Check the connection of the Paper Low Sensor connector. Remove the foreign objects. Connect the connector correctly. Remove the foreign objects. Connect the connector correctly. Phenomenon Cause Check method Solution Faulty connection of the Cutter Home Sensor. Paper feed failure (Paper jam) Check the Connection of the Cutter Home Sensor s connector Check whether or not the paper is jammed or torn and caught in the paper path. Connect the connector correctly. Remove the jammed paper from the paper path and set the paper properly. If no paper condition is not detected when the receipt paper is used up, the printer will continue to print without paper, causing damage to the print head or other problems. 6-3
34 7.PERIODIC MAINTENANCE SPAA-214-R1 7.1 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE 7. PERIODIC MAINTENANCE To retain the quality and performance of this machine and to prevent unexpected troubles, the following maintenance should be performed periodically. 7.1 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE PROCEDUE Be sure to perform the following cleaning and checks every six months.
