1 How To Do A Federico Mohara Perfume Consultation First a bit about how the brain decodes and understands the real world and how what we perceive is often quite different from reality. 1

2 Our Senses do not always correspond to the real world For example, this is the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Nicely divided up into colours. Note that this is linear, there is more above and below that we cannot see with our eyes and there is no way the top of the visual spectrum, the blue end, matches the bottom, the red end 2

3 The Colour Wheel But although Red and Violet are at opposite ends of the visible spectrum, to our eyes they are next to each other and a small change to one changes it to the other. Now that s why we talk about the colour WHEEL, where a small change to one colour will convert it to the adjacent colour. The colour wheel on the left has 3 options for each primary colour mixing to give 12 shades. The one on the right is the one we use with computers which has 256 options for each primary colour. So this Colour Wheel is a representation of the real world that is a better match to the way we perceive colours 3

4 The Fragrance Wheel The fragrance wheel, devised by Michael Edwards is a similar way of showing how our noses perceive scents. 4 Categories, 14 Families and about 500 groups are arranged on a wheel so that changing one family slightly will move you to the next family. For example, adding orange blossom and sweet spices to the Soft Floral family changes it to the Floral Oriental family. Here we have an internationally recognised coding system for perfumes where perfumes in the same family and group have similar fragrances. This system has been used by perfume consultants for the last 30 years. 4

5 Want to be a Perfume Salesperson or a Perfume Consultant You ve all seen perfume salespersons in the department stores, spraying people with their tester perfumes trying to make sales. Some people approach FM Perfumes that way, give the customer a sniff of one of our best selling brands and ask if they want to buy. It s how we all start out, with our mini-kit of perfumes. There is another approach. FM has 150 perfumes spread across the Fragrance Wheel. The FM perfume consultant asks the customer what perfumes they like, identifies their favourite sections of the fragrance wheel and recommends FM perfumes from that section of the wheel. 5

6 Step 1:- Get the Client to tell you the names of perfumes they have enjoyed wearing I use this A6 Pocket Card and give them out to people. The Birthdate is only needed if you are using the Fragrance Consult packages. These give both a Zodiac and a Chinese horoscope just for fun and suggest Fragrance Families that the Client should like. Why 3 favourites? It helps show if they have a particular fragrance family they like 6

7 Step 2:- Identify the Fragrance Families of those perfumes 1. Look up the perfume name in the Identifying Families list. 2. If it is not among the top 400 perfumes, look it up in Fragrances of the World, or get someone to look it up for you The full guide is quite expensive, costing about 180 a year and of course new distributors cannot afford it, so we have produced a mini-list of 430 most frequently requested perfumes for you to use. You ll find it in the Perfume Consultants MiniKit. I offer the client this list to browse, it helps remind them of perfumes they have loved. If the perfume they love is among the 19,000 high street perfumes that are not in Identifying Families, you will need to look it up in Fragrances of the World, or ask someone to look it up for you. The facebook group FM Tools was set up for this purpose, you can search the group for that elusive perfume or ask for it s Fragrance Wheel group. 7

8 The Identifying Fragrance Wheel Families Booklet The client has said they like, let s say, Euphoria so look down the list and say ah yes, Euphoria by Calvin Klein, that s about 35 for 50ml of EDP, Eau de Parfum. The fragrance family for that is Woody Oriental Green Fresh and we have 1 FM Perfume in that group. Now note that Fragrance Family and Group and do the same for the next perfume name. 8

9 Step 3:- Select an FM perfume Using the Selecting Fragrances booklet, select an FM Perfume to match each fragrance group You will usually find all three choices come from the same or close groups, so look for those groups and identify which FM perfumes are closest. For Example, Euphoria was Woody Oriental Green Fresh, so we can say something like Based on your Fragrance Profile, I think you would love our FM14, a parfum from our Classic range for Continue with the other 2 choices and you have your fragrance consultation which will look like this 9

10 Step 4:- Give them a Consultation Card From Your Fragrance Profile we recommend these FM Perfumes FM224 Men s Classic Range ml EDP FM326 Luxury Men ml EDP FM65 Men s Classic Range ml EDP Ring us on for samples of these perfumes I give them a card to take away with my contact details and also ask them which they would like to try first. 10

11 Didn t t like FM14? Offer them other perfumes from close by, for example the citrussy 297 or the gourmand 32 If they didn t like any perfume, try offering them another from close by on the fragrance wheel, for instance 30 & 311. Or if you want something a bit different try 297 & 32, which are top ten bestsellers. 11

13 My Consultation Card inside This is the printout from my consultation spreadsheet which is on the Toolkit DVDROM. As you can see it s personalised with the clients name and gives the two horoscopes and three recommendations. If I m doing this for a boyfriend or husband who has no idea about perfumes, I leave the perfumes blank and go with the horoscope choices. The right hand side gives a full description of each of the perfumes recommended. 13
