learning, interaction and WEB
web 2.0 means using the web the way it's meant to be used. the trends we're seeing now are the inherent nature of the web emerging however, changing dramatically the way we see enterprises, work and learning 2
let s see what is going on 3

blogging is something people do themselves, for free, because they enjoy it. like open source hackers, bloggers compete with people working for money, and often win 9
the good stuff spreads, and the bad gets ignored. and in both cases, feedback from the audience, interaction with peers, improves the work 10
AM A TEUR somebody doing something for pleasure Encarta dictionary 11
EM PLOY MENT the condition of working for pay Encarta dictionary 12
PEOPLE WORK A LOT HARDER ON STUFF THEY LIKE. THAT'S NEWS TO NO ONE. BUT THE STRUCTURE OF BUSINESS AND LEARNING DONT REFLECT IT 13
THE STRUCTURES OF BUSINESS AND LEARNING ARE ABOUT CHANNELS, PLACES, HOURS, ROLE HIERACHIES AND EMPLOYMENT RELATIONSHIPS WEB 2.0 ISN T 14
15
IN ORDER TO SUCCEED YOU NEEDED TO GET INTO AND MASTER THE CHANNELS 16
it was the limited number and narrowness of channels that made professionals seem so superior to amateurs. there were only a few jobs as professional journalists, for example, so competition ensured the average journalist was fairly good whereas anyone can express opinions about current events in a bar 17
18
those in the print media who dismiss the writing online because of its low average quality are missing an important point: no one reads the average blog. the average quality of writing online isn't what the print media are competing against. they're competing against the best writing online, outside the channels. and they're losing 19
BLOGGING IS A FAD, BUT 20
on which side there is more interesting information? 21
MARGINAL TRANSACTION COSTS MEAN FREEDOM FROM CHANNELS 22
another thing blogs and open source software have in common is that they're often made by people working AND LEARNING anywhere. that may not seem surprising. but it should be. companies spend millions to build office buildings for a single purpose: to be a place to work. yet people working in their own homes, which aren't even designed to be workplaces end up being more productive 23
24
25
26
27
28
the most demoralizing aspect of the traditional office is that you're supposed to be there at certain times. there are usually a few people in a company who really have to, but the reason most employees work fixed hours is that the company can't measure their productivity 29
the basic idea behind office hours is that if you can't make people work, you can at least prevent them from not working. thus people spend a large portion of their time in the grey area between work and non-work 30
31
WEB 2.0 IS ABOUT BOTTOM UP AND FROM THE MARGINS INWARDS 32
the big lesson we can learn from open source and blogging is that ideas can bubble up from the bottom, instead of flowing down from the top. open source and blogging both work bottom-up: people make what they want, and the best stuff prevails 33
it's the principle of a market economy. ironically, though open source and blogs are done for free, those worlds resemble market economies, while most companies, for all their talk about the value of free markets, are run internally like communist states 34
COMPANIES ENSURE QUALITY THROUGH RULES AND HIERARCHIES TO PREVENT EMPLOYEES FROM SCREWING UP. YOU DON'T NEED THAT WHEN PEOPLE COMMUNICATE WITH ONE ANOTHER 35
ideas and even the enforcement of quality can flow bottom-up. and in both cases the results are not merely acceptable, but better. for example, open source software is more reliable precisely because it's open source; anyone can find mistakes 36
the big obstacle preventing us from seeing the future of business is the assumption that people creating value together (for you) have to be employees and inside the channels 37
one reason so many good ideas come from the margins is simply because there's so much of it. there have to be more outsiders than insiders. if the number of outsiders is huge it will always seem as if a lot of ideas come from them, even if few do per capita. this is often called open innovation 38
some advanced companies give employees who do great work, not managers only, large grants of stock to simulate the rewards of a start up. they even let hackers spend 20% of their time on their own projects 39
why not let people spend 100% of their time on their own projects, and instead of trying to approximate the value of what they create, give them the actual market value? impossible? that is in fact what venture capitalists do
at the moment, even the smartest students leave school thinking they have to get a job. actually what they need to do is make something valuable. a job is only one way to do that. the more ambitious ones will ordinarily be better off taking money from an investor than an employer
