Efforts by the food industry using packaging to help reduce food waste David Bellamy, Confederation of the Food and Drink Industries of the EU (CIAA) Green Week, 24 May 2011
Who is the CIAA? The CIAA represents the food and drink industries of the EU, the largest manufacturing sector in the EU: It has an annual turnover of 954 billion; It directly employs 4.2 million people; It covers 310,000 food and drink companies (99.1 % SMEs); It processes 70% of EU agricultural production; It exports 68.5 billion in food and drink products to third countries; and CIAA members are 26 national federations (including three observers), 26 EU sector associations and 19 large food and drink companies. 24 May,
Environmental sustainability in the food chain The CIAA is taking action to: Continuously improve the food and drink industry s sustainability through cooperative action; Spread best practice; Increase R&D and innovation; Provide reliable information to consumers; and Improve the industry s knowledge base. 24 May,

CASE STUDY IN THE UK: WRAP Courtauld Commitment The Commitment includes a target to reduce UK household food and drink wastes by 4% by end 2012 against 2009 baseline 49 signatories (brands and retailers) Signatories help WRAP meet its target through support for LFHW campaign and other joint initiatives that help consumers buy right amount of food and get most out of what they buy The Commitment delivered food waste savings of 270,000 tonnes per year by March May,
CASE STUDY IN NORWAY: ForMat-project 2010 Joint project between Norwegian Food & Drink Industries, Retailers & Suppliers to the retailers. Supported by the Ministries for Food & Agriculture & the Environment Aims to reduce food waste by 25% by 2015 in Norway Fresh bakery products, fresh fruits & vegetables contribute most to waste (monetary value and tonnage) Big potential for food waste reduction in the retail sector Most frequent reason for food waste: exceeded the expiry date (60%), loss of quality (35%), too large units in packaging (32%) & packaging with low functionality (27%) Consumers difficulty differentiating between expiry date labeling & quality loss 21
Conclusions Priority should be prevention at all stages of the supply chain Households are responsible for greatest proportion of avoidable food waste Industry has put in place practices to minimise waste and maximize utilisation of raw material Several options to tackle the issue: raising consumer awareness; increasing consumer knowledge regarding date labelling, storage & preparation, consumer shopping & meal planning Packaging also plays a key role in preventing food waste along with wastage of all the embedded resources Apply more uniform categorisation and reporting procedures to Member States to improve data quality The polluter pays principle should be enforced 24 May,
