Qualifications Alumni of UConn, In the Industry for 46 Years, Brass Mill, Tubing Mill, and Re-roll Mill Experience, and Metallurgical training. I have had 2 Metal Warehouses and now have an International Metal Sales Office.
Copper and Brass Alloys Copper 101 Known also as OFE (Oxygen Free) It is % copper Primarily used for electrical contacts, Modern technology has made this use minimal. Copper 110 Composed of % Copper and very small trace elements making up the other 5% It is also referred to on some specifications as Electrical Tough Pitch (ETP). Copper 110 is most commonly used in Copper Bus Bar.
What Happens when we add different Elements to basic materials? Add 90.00% Copper with 10 % Zinc. And this results in our having RED Brass. 70% Copper and 30% Zinc to make Yellow Brass. This is use for many products, what are they? You may all have some Yellow Brass in your pocket right now Your car keys, yes, even house keys, lock sets, instruments, radiators, We are glad we have Yellow Brass.
Other Bronzes: What happens if we take out the Zinc and add Tin in its place? Now we have Phosphor Bronze, this is used primarily for spring contacts. Now if we add 18% Nickel and 18% Zinc to Copper we come up with a material that is a silver color. used for again for spring contacts, in addition jewelry, musical instruments and fancy western belt buckles. Brass Rod It s a tasty metal made up of 60%copper, 3% Lead and the balance is
Basic Metals and Elements We have just covered that if we take a basic metal and add different elements to it, it becomes what you might say a different animal.
What about Refractory Metals Beryllium, Molybdenum, Niobium, Zirconium, and I could mention many more. Why Called Refractory? These are called Refractory Metals because of the high degree of heat needed to melt, 2200 C. or 4000F. We find these small quantities in many Steel Alloys, Stainless Steel, High Nickel Alloys, and Aircraft Metals. These serve as a hardening agent, resistant to corrosion, as an example even mercury corrosion. Refractory Metals are also used by NASA for the Space Shuttles, and Space exploration, where there is extreme heat and corrosion.
Titanium It is one of the Elements. On the Periodic Scale it is #22 and one of the most popular element names, so popular that Marketers apply it to thousands of products whether it contains actual Titanium or not. It is 45% lighter than Steel. Commercially pure, it is used in Marine and Chemical applications because of its excellent corrosion prevention. The workhorse of the Titanium group 50% or more is the 6AL/4V grade. This is used for Aircraft and Watercraft and other apps, where high strength and high performance is necessary. The 6AL/4V ELI has higher purity and is the metal of choice for Dental and Medical applications, this comes in wire, bar, sheet and plate.
High Temperature Alloys Can be used for Chemical use equipment, Any Caustic resistant requirements, as well as Electronic and Aerospace parts. One limitation is most of these alloys are produced in round bar. Note on your card: Nickel 200 is the purest of all the listed alloys in this section being 99% Nickel. We can highlight Nickel 400, if you Add Chromium or Carbon, you now have a metal good for Marine parts that are: shafts, fasteners, gears.
High Temp Alloys Incoloy 909 is a good application for gas turbines, combustion cans, and flame holders. Inconel 718 To base Nickel add Chromium, Iron, Molybdenum, and Tantalum this results in a metal that can be used for Jet engines, Rockets, and such applications requiring very high temperatures.
Stainless Steel Stainless 304 best used for food, cookware, dairy processing equipment, sterilizers, photo chemical equipment and some surgical apparatus, a new ASTM Spec. F-899 gives you 304-V use in surgical implants.
Stainless Steel In the 400 series, these are a high temperature stainless, 420 Stainless is used for Dental and Surgical tools, plus gears, and Shafts. We all know Alloy 440- C is used for cutlery, and surgical instruments.
Nitronic Alloys Often these are used where there is galling and wear. Used on Valve stems, roller bearings, and such.
Aircraft Metals Alloy 4130 Chromium and Molybdenum have been added to a base Steel.this results in metal with the strength to be used in aircraft frames, large boat shafts and piston rods. Harder Metals If we were to take Alloy 4130 just above there and add a percentage of Nickel we have a metal that can be used in gears, axle shafts, or Mine drilling, yes we have Alloy And Alloy was designed to be used in the manufacturing of roller bearings, and ball bearings but the market does not feature it in all sizes and form; this is also true with some of the other Aircraft Alloys.
Aluminum Ranging from the 1100 series which is pure aluminum to 7075 which is pure Aluminum along with copper, silicon, magnesium, and chromium added and you have one of the strongest and hardest Aluminums available to the market. Its use is in Truck bodies, Sailboats, Aircraft, Anti-corrosive containers and electronic parts. At Alloy 2024 you have pure Aluminum 93%, 4 ½% Copper, and 1 ½% Magnesium now we have the first heat-treatable Aluminum, with strength capable to be used for Aircraft parts, Frames and the skin of the Aircraft. The 500 series that you see there 5052 Sheet metal, 5083,5086, and 5454 are known as Marine Alloys and used in fresh and salt water applications.
