7 Introduction The aim of this manual is to provide a survey of vehicle refinishing. Glasurit offers a comprehen sive range of products for the repair trade which allows bodyshops to select the ideal refinishing process by choosing fast or slow hardeners, thin ners and additives. Only by the selection of and specialisation in certain materials, can efficient and economic paint jobs be achieved. What is most important for a good result is to stick to the recommended application data in respect of mixing ratios, film thickness, viscosity and dry ing time etc. For all the products mentioned in the individual refinishing processes, we have enclosed, in section >G<, technical data sheets (sub-divided into primers/fillers, topcoats etc.), in which you will find the application data needed and other useful in formation. Please note in particular the details on faster and slower thinners and hardeners, by means of which you can tailor the chosen product to the working conditions in your own shop. The amount of labour involved in a paint job depends on the condition of the old paintwork and the customer s demands. A high quality refinishing job, for example on a virtually new car, must result in a very good finish quality, which means that comprehensive body-filling and priming work with careful fine sanding will be required. Water-based refinishing, which allows to achieve the same quality level as solvent-based paint materials, involves the use of appropriate water-based products. The most important advantage of this environ mentally acceptable process is that solvent con sumption can be reduced by up to 80% compared to solvent-based refinishing systems. A-0 In plastics refinishing, the paint materials to be used must be specially adjusted to the properties, for example the elasticity, of the plastics to be refinished. The recommended refinishing processes are detailed in section >C< (C-4). Defects (cracks, holes etc.) in plastic hang-on parts should be repaired using the Teroson Plastic Repair Kit (see also SI98.20-N-0001A of ). Contact details: Henkel Teroson GmbH Peter B.J. Hasel Automotive Aftermarket TLI Tel.: +49 / Fax.: +49 / Hotline: +49 / peter.hasel@henkel.com Blending-in is necessary or recommended when the refinishing of a part (panel repair) would result in a visible colour difference. Spot repair is possi ble only in the case of small damage in rather hidden areas and is usually more time-consuming and more expensive than blending in. In case of vehicles originally coated with a scratchresistant clear, a scratch-resistant clear must also be used when repairing these vehicles. For further information please refer to sections >A< (A 4) and >F< (F-6-10). In the case of Warranty Refinishing (repairs done under guaranty or warranty agreements, e.g. repair of construction-related damage due to corrosion on the body or chassis of a vehicle), only the repair processes specified in section >D< (D-1 and/or D-1-1) may be used! These are also the processes to be applied when refinishing Vito and Viano models, and vans in general. An economical repair is a time-saving and economical process in which the amount of labour involved should just meet the customer s demands as regards the appearance of the refin ished areas. This is the process recommended for older vehicles. For details, please see section >C< (C-6) Page 1 of 1

28 Checking the colour Checking the colour To do a good repair job, it is sometimes necessary to match the colour by tinting, blending in, or polishing the old paintwork. Therefore, careful comparison between the new paint and the original finish is essential. Any variation in colour must be modified before application. The mixing formula shown on the microfiche can assist in this. You should use only the mixing bases contained in the mixing formula for tinting, or the reduced bases indicated in the tinting guide. An adequate colour comparison can only be carried out on a sprayed (not handpainted) dry paint film (including the clear coat in the case of metallic finishes) and must be done in daylight, or under a daylight lamp. 22 Line HS 2K topcoat can be compared already after a few minutes drying. With metallic colours, the spray-out (sample) as well as the actual spraying should be done by the same person. Due to weathering, age and washing, almost all paint finishes are subject to changes in appearance and colour. This is caused by the absorption of dirt or by external influences (temperature, humidity, UV radiation, acid rain etc.). These effects can in most cases be removed by polishing. Repairing basecoats is more difficult as the colour and the brightness of the metallic effect strongly depend on the application method used. B-1 1. On the diameter of the spray gun nozzle and the spraying pressure. With a small nozzle and high spraying pressure, the atomisation is finer. This produces a lighter colour. 2. On the reducer and the spraying viscosity. With a rather fast reducer, the silver effect achieved is usually more brilliant than that obtained with a rather slow reducer. The higher the viscosity, the coarser the spray pattern, which increases the risk of clouding. 3. On the spraying method. When you spray rather dry, or apply a dust coat, this makes the colour lighter and more metallic. When you spray rather wet, the colour appears fuller and darker. Within these variants, you find the full range of nuances as regards metallic effect and colour. 4. On the distance of the spray gun from the object to be painted. A short distance between the spray gun and the object being painted produces a rather wet film and a rather dark and chromatic shade. A wider distance results in a drier film and a lighter and more metallic colour. Colour alterations It may happen that OEM colours are slightly altered for technical or styling reasons, without the colour code and/or name being changed. Furthermore, production-related colour fluctuations can occur (for example with paints from different production plants or of different quality etc.). information purpose only; they may change without prior information and do not constitute the agreed contractual quality of the products (product specification). 33 Cleaning / Sanding / Sanding equipment B-2 First wash the old paintwork thoroughly. Then clean with Glasurit Wax and Silicone Remover or with Glasurit Degreasing and Cleansing Agent (with a VOC level of 200 g/l or below) to remove all traces of tar, wax and silicones. Then sand with paper, wet or dry. For plastic substrates, use Glasurit Universal Cleaner for Plastics or Glasurit Degreasing and Cleansing Agent Badly weathered or cracked paintwork must be sanded down to a sound surface. All dust must be completely removed from the area after sanding. After dry sanding, remove dust with compressed air, then wipe down with a dust-absorbent cloth. After wet sanding, rinse with clean water and wipe thoroughly dry, including edges and seams. Allow residual moisture to evaporate entirely. Inadequate cleaning can mean that the remaining dust particles will cause blistering and loss of adhesion. Rust patches must be sanded down to the bare metal. Areas where the metal has rusted through should be covered with tin. In the case of larger areas new metal must be welded in or new parts fitted. Welding and tinning residues as well as traces of mould release agents must be completely removed. New electro-coated (EC) parts, if not damaged, are dry sanded with P 320 sanding paper and primed. Damaged areas should be sanded with a random orbital sander and P 240 paper. The surface treatment of aluminium components (bonnets, doors etc.) is especially important. It is essential to observe the following points for occupational health and safety reasons: Abrasives - Abrasives must be used either for aluminium or for steel, but not both. - Abrasives which have already been used on steel substrates must not be used to sand aluminium substrates because of the danger of galvanic corrosion. Explosion protection - Aluminium particles must be extracted separately from steel particles. - The particles must be disposed of immediately because of the danger of an explosion. - The use of compressed air to clean the bodyshop floor is prohibited. - Aluminium substrates may not be sanded with a grit of less than P 400 since this can produce fine dusts which are an explosion hazard. Tools: - The use of sharp-edged tools must be avoided since these can cause deep grooves and scratches. - Extraction systems, sanding and parting tools must be used either for aluminium or steel, but not both. Any steel fines which are generated must not be allowed to come into contact with tools which are used when working with aluminium Page 1 of 3

36 an VOC legislation B-3 Decorative Paint Directive 2004/42/EC In addition to the above-mentioned EC VOC Directive to limit VOCs in paints, the an Union has adopted a new directive. The Decorative Paint Directive, which must be incorporated into national legislation by all member states of the an Union, aims to limit VOCs in automotive refinishing products. The major points of the directive are: Takes effect starting January 1, 2007 After this date, in the member states of the an Union, only paints may be sold for automotive refinishing that do not exceed the maximum limit of VOCs (e.g. solvents) provided by law At the same time, the container labels, Technical Data Sheets, and Material Safety Data Sheets for the relevant refinishing products must list the following information: 2004/42/IIB(d)(420) /42 = Decorative Paint Directive IIB = Annex IIB (d) = Subcategory (420) = VOC limit value g/l (relevant for topcoats in this case) 410 = VOC actual value g/l (ready to use form) The sales prohibition is valid in principle for all automotive refinish paints manufactured after January 1, Only the following exceptions apply: The exceptions to the prohibition continue to apply to automotive refinish paints applied in installations as long as the requirements of the Ordinance regarding the reduction of VOC emissions resulting from the use of organic solvents in specific installations (German Solvents Ordinance) are met. This ordinance transposes the EU Solvent Directive (1999/13/EC) into German law. Paints with a solvent content exceeding the limit value provided for by the Directive may continue to be sold if these paints are used exclusively for the repair of classic cars. Automotive repair paints are not subject to the sales prohibition if they are not used in the course of a repair of vehicles but for instance are used by operators of industrial body shops (including small industry). The sales prohibition is valid for manufacturer and at all levels of commerce. Violations of the prohibitions may be punished by fines or may be treated as a criminal offense. information purpose only; they may change without prior information and do not constitute the agreed contractual quality of the products (product specification). 38 B-4 Scratch-resistant clearcoats: Pre-treatment and finishing operations For some Mercedes Benz vehicles highly scratch-resistant clears are used in the production line coating process. The type label of the associated vehicles has a "C" in front of the paint code. Accordingly, for repairs, suitable more scratch-resistant clearcoat systems should also be used and the processes described below should be followed. Glasurit recommends the use of the following clears: Glasurit HS Clear scratch resistant VOC (VOC-compliant) Glasurit HS UV Clear, scratch resistant (non-voc-compliant) Pre-treatment of the original paintwork (as recommended by the supplier) Sanding of the original paintwork Pre-treatment of the blend-in surfaces Depending on the hardness of the paintwork sand the surface with a random orbital sander (orbit diameter: 3-5 mm) and 3M TM Hookit TM 255P Gold with P 320 P 500 grit (or: 3M TM Hookit TM Purple Premium). Sand the surface with a random orbital sander (orbit diameter: 3 5 mm) and 3M TM Hookit TM 260L with P 800 P 1200 grit. Finish-sand corners and edges using 3M TM Soft Pad ulftrafine. If the above procedure has been followed correctly, the surface treated will have a uniform mat appearance, and sanding marks will be clearly visible. Finishing operations: Sanding/removing of Runs Wet sand runs with a sanding block and P 800 sanding paper to produce an even surface. Then sand the surface with a random orbital sander (orbit diameter: 3-5 mm) and 3M TM Hook-it TM 260L (grit size: P 1500). Textured surface (orange peel) Sand the surface with a random orbital sander (orbit diameter: 3-5 mm) and 3M TM Hook-it TM 260L (grit size: P 1500). Remove dirt or dust inclusions with the red side of an E50199 Finesse-it TM sanding block and abrasive discs # (9 µ) or A. To reduce polishing times for all three types of paintwork defects finish sand the sanded surfaces with Trizact TM or fine finishing discs for 75 mm or 150 mm random orbital sanders. (For rather small paintwork defects you may also use Trizact TM abrasive discs fitted to the soft side of the Finesse-it TM sanding block). information purpose only; they may change without prior information and do not constitute the agreed contractual quality of the products (product specification). 39 B-4 Scratch-resistant clearcoats: Pre-treatment and finishing operations Polishing Quality check Fine polishing Polish the sanded areas at low speed using a lambswool pad and 3M TM Perfect-it TM sanding paste. Do not apply too much pressure to the machine. After having sanded the surface for approx. 15 seconds slightly increase the speed and further reduce the pressure on the machine (to the point where the machine is moved over the surface carrying only its own weight). Once the polished surface has cooled down, apply finish control spray and remove it again instantly from the surface. If the repaired areas can no longer be distinguished from the original paintwork, continue with the fine polishing operations. If the repaired area is still visible, repeat the operations specified in the Polishing section. The orange Compounding Pad and Fine Sanding Paste (or Perfect it III Extra Fine Sanding Paste for scratch-resistant finishes) should be used at this stage to restore the original deep gloss of the finish. At low speed and exerting little pressure, buff all the areas previously polished with the lambswool pad. Thanks to the properties of the clear used, the result of these last two working steps will be of such good quality that no further buffing of the surface with Machine Polish will be necessary. It is of course possible to complete repair jobs with this working step when critical colours such as black or dark mica colours are involved. For additional protection, the surfaces treated can be sealed with Finishing Glaze. information purpose only; they may change without prior information and do not constitute the agreed contractual quality of the products (product specification). 40 Finishing operations and care of mat clearcoat finishes B-5 As part of its designo programme, Mercedes-Benz offers its customers individualised, top-quality items of trim or finish such as high-grade wood varieties or finest leather for the vehicle interior and fascinating, exclusive exterior colours. Mercedes-Benz is now extending its designo programme to include a mat clearcoat that gives the vehicles a special visual touch, as can be seen from the example of the SL model. SL Designo Crystal Silver mat Here, the mat finish is not only an eye-catcher. It also stands out on account of its good scratch resistance and dirt repellent properties. Pre-treatment of OEM finishes No special measures are necessary as regards abrasives and sanding processes. Refinish paintwork The automotive refinish paint system is applied in the familiar manner except for the type of mat clear to be used (e.g. D-1-1). e.g. Glasurit MS Clear, extra mat (for details with regard to application: see F-6-2) For different gloss levels, see G-1-2 Mat Clear System. information purpose only; they may change without prior information and do not constitute the agreed contractual quality of the products (product specification). 41 Finishing operations and care of mat clearcoat finishes B-5 Finishing operations (refinish paintwork) As defects visible on the surface of the clearcoat, such as dust inclusions, runs, etc., can no longer be removed so as to render them invisible, great care is to be taken when applying the paint materials and meticulous cleanliness is to be observed. Polishing is not possible, as this produces changes in the gloss level! Care of the paintwork It is absolutely necessary to avoid: Polishing the clearcoat surface Using waxes and polishes Using sponges that produce scratches (e.g. domestic sponges, cloths, etc.) Using a car wash Using any aggressive media (cleaners, oils, greases, etc.) Cleaning (washing the vehicle): You should always avoid washing the vehicle when it is directly exposed to sunlight. Before washing the vehicle, dirt that is not firmly attached (dust, leaves, etc.) should be removed with compressed air. Insects, bird droppings, etc. adhering to the paintwork are to be well soaked in water before being removed with a high-pressure cleaner. The vehicle should preferably be washed by hand, using a soft sponge, a neutral cleaning agent and plenty of water. The vehicle should preferably be dried by blowing off the moisture with compressed air and then using a soft chamois leather. information purpose only; they may change without prior information and do not constitute the agreed contractual quality of the products (product specification). 144 700-7 Coagulating Powder X Application: When using water-borne products such as: - Glasurit 90 Line Basecoat, Metallics/Solids - Glasurit K Primer Filler - Glasurit Stone Chip and Underbody Protection - Glasurit Texture Finish the water used to clean working tools should be collected in suitable containers. These containers must not get in touch with solvents. Use of Coagulating Powder: Add 2 or 3 scoops of Coagulating Powder (approx. 75 g) per about 10 litres waste water (scatter the powder to distribute the particles evenly and to increase efficiency) and stir briefly. After a short interval, the solids will start to coagulate and can then be separated from the liquid by filtering, for example through filter mats or appropriate sieves (with a mesh size of about microns). When the contaminant concentration in the waste water is very high (i.e., when the water has not become clear after about 15 minutes), add more Coagulating Powder. There is no risk of overdosing with The coagulated substance must be disposed of in the same way as solvent-borne paint waste. The clear, aqueous phase may be discharged into the public sewage system subject to local waste-water regulations. When you are not sure, consult the competent local authorities. Properties: Glasurit Coagulating Powder is used to precipitate solids from the water used to clean working tools with which water-based products were processed. Remarks: Once the coagulated substance has been separated, the clear, aqueous phase can be used again for pre-cleaning sprayguns, which are finally rinsed with fresh tap water. 162 Glasurit Mat Clear System G-1-2 G Properties: Substrates: Remarks: Refinishing process for 90 Line basecoat/clearcoat systems with Glasurit MS Clear extra mat and Glasurit MS Clear mat elastified. Please see e.g. >C-3< for the refinishing steps up to the application of 90 Line. Due to the different mixing ratio ratios of the clears to be used, you may achieve a gloss level between units (at an angle of 60 ). The gloss level may be higher for light and pure silver colours. Additionally, car bodies may show gloss level differences between vertically and horizontally coated panels. Therefore, we recommend to produce a spray-out sample before each refinishing job and to compare it with the area to be repaired. Stir the and clears well before use! In order to avoid any gloss deviation when refinishing mat clearcoats, it is important to observe the recommended film thicknesses for basecoat and clearcoat to apply staggered overlaps to produce consistent basecoat and clearcoat film thicknesses. to allow the clear to flash off until completely mat after each spraycoat. (Generally, after the first spraycoat min and after the second spraycoat min. That depends on air speed and spraybooth temperature.) With mat surfaces it is not possible to remove dust inclusions by polishing because polishing changes the gloss level. Therefore, it is very important to work very carefully during cleaning and application. to fade out the clear because the film thickness in the blending area varies, which changes the gloss level. Therefore, always apply the clear to the whole panel!
