Azores: The Region of Renewables Porto, May 2012
Some history Although not mentioning Renewables, the use of energy has always been environmentally friendly in the Azores; The direct uses (biomass and geothermal in kitchen, water and wind in mills) proliferated for many years;
Some History 110 years of experience in the exploitation of small and isolated electric systems and in the use of renewable energy; The first electric power plant was a hydro plant and appeared in 1899, as an initiative of Eng. José Cordeiro and was the third in the country; Cidade Hydro Plant, Terceira (1954)
Some History The first geothermal power plant started operation in 1980, at the location of the current (2006) Geothermal Plant of Pico Vermelho;
Some History The first wind farms in Portugal were built in the Azores and in Madeira, in our case at the island of Santa Maria, in 1988*, on the scope of a wind energy support program for developing countries, promoted by Germany and financing, nonrefundable, 85% of the investment. *Azores: September; Madeira: May
Some History 55% 19% 26%
Some History The first wave energy power plant appeared in the Azores, in Pico Island, in 1999, after around ten years of studies, project and construction. Based on the principle OWC (oscillating water column) and with no industrial character, it ended up being transferred to the Wave Energy Centre for investigation purposes.
Some History For a few dozens of years, the Island of São Miguel was exclusively supplied with hydroelectric energy; Only in 1950, and to satisfy the increase in consumption, the first thermal generator was installed at the Hydro Plant of Fajã Redonda, which therefore became the first mixed power plant of the Azores.
Electricity Production Electric Energy Production Total 296 GWh x 2,9 850 GWh Renewable 20 GWh x 11,9 239 GWh Since 1996: the production of wind energy increased by 1300% the production of geothermal energy increased by 300%
Electricity Production (Renewable)
Electricity Production Azores São Miguel Island Flores Island
Some Recent Facts In 2010, the five wind turbines of Terceira Island wind farm were classified in 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, 6 th and 7 th of the world s top ten in the E44 wind turbines production rank! The wind turbine which was classified in the 1 st place had 4268 hours of nominal power use in 2010! (one year has 8760 hours)
Renewables in the Azores Contrary to what happens in the mainland and in the majority of the world, renewables are economic in the Azores; In the Azores, year 2011, the average selling price of renewables (except micro-generation) to the public network was 88,4 /MWh and only the cost of fuel for thermal production was 126 /MWh (117 /MWh in heavy fuel oil and 198 /MWh in diesel)
Horizon 2016
Horizon 2016 Renewable Energy 415 GWh (259 GWh in 2011) Renewable Energy Share 50%. Avoided heavy fuel oil (tons) Avoided diesel (litres) Avoided CO 2 emissions (tons)
Technological Limit The current technological state of the art doesn t allow, in the case of the small isolated electric systems of the Azores, to attain renewable shares superior to around 50%/year; Our goal of 75% until 2018 implies significant changes in the configuration of our current electric systems.
