How to Get Elected? Be imaginative (but stay within the rules)! Talk to students as much as possible about yourself, your campaign and your manifesto Talk to students in the halls of residences Go to student events and talk to people Focus on main entrances of buildings with computing facilities Get noticed!
Campaigning Tips Lecture shout-outs. You should ask the lecturer for permission first Keep flyers and manifestos with you at all times, as you never know when a canvassing opportunity may appear. But remember not to litter Remember, don t harass students you may lose a vote instead of gaining one Be friendly and genuine; listen and respond to your voters Check out the Candidates Campaigning Guide
Get a Campaign Team
Campaigning Rules Here are some key points to remember: Encourage students to vote but harassment or intimidation of voters will not be tolerated. You are free to put publicity on open boards or with express permission from the relevant authorities for other poster boards. Always think: can your activity create an unfair advantage over all other candidates. You can endorse other candidates but you should not share campaign resources. Critique your opponent s stance on issues but be careful not to get personal.
Campaigning Rules You cannot be endorsed by clubs and societies including the student media. Make sure you don t abuse your current or previous privileges which are available to you and not other candidates. Don t refer to Union staff in your campaign materials. Union student staff are free to campaign for you, but must not campaign whilst on duty or in uniform. If in doubt, check with the Returning Officer.
Posters and Banners Banners: Portico railings Don t clamber around in the dark Posters steer clear of stairs and fire routes/exits Take everything down when campaigning is over
Social Networks Candidates may set up their own Campaign Group for campaigning but not before the start of campaigning. You may not use existing administrator privileges to mass message group members or post updates. You may only do so on your Campaign Group. Your Campaign Group must invite the Union profile Dermot O Cracy to join your group.
Your Publicity If you wish to use publicity in your campaign, you are responsible for the publicity and making sure it is within the rules. Publicity is not pre-approved. You can seek advice and guidance at the Candidates Breakfast Briefings. More on this in a bit.
13 25 October Candidates Breakfast Weekdays, am The Study, Floor 2, 25 Gordon Street
Elections Budget You can t spend more than 100 on your election campaign. You can claim your expenditure back as long as you have valid receipts. All candidates must submit their Elections Budget to the Room 405, 4 th floor, 25 Gordon Street by 10am on Wednesday 25 October. If you have spent 0, you still need to submit a budget or su.elections@ucl.ac.uk by the deadline. Failure to do this may result in election disciplinary action.
Elections Budget Funding All campaign expenditure needs to be listed on your elections budget and, where available, receipts should be attached. Items received free of charge will count towards your budget, unless freely available to all candidates equally. Where no receipts are provided, the cost must reflect market value. Checks may be made on the internet. Check your pack for an Elections Budget Form!
The Voting System The Union uses the Transferable Vote system in elections. It can be quite a confusing system if you have not come across it before and even if you have you may find that you need to explain it to those who might vote for you. The purpose of this part is to ensure that you understand the system and to make sure you know how every vote counts. Parliamentary Elections use the first past the post system, which gives you one vote. The Transferable Vote system allows each voter the fullest freedom of choice between candidates and the maximum use of their vote.
Transferable Vote
Campaigning under STV In order to make sure you can exhaust all votes cast, you should: For your voters: encourage them to vote first preference for you For confirmed voters of opponents: encourage them to vote for you as their second preference
The Election Results will be announced at 6pm on studentsunionucl.org
Declaration of Nominations
What next? Get your publicity designed Kick start your campaign (from Friday 13 October) Talk to students Get students to vote for you Vote October 2017
