Background African GWADI The Arid and Semi-arid Regions of the World
Sub-Saharan African G-WADI 1 st Workshop: consultative meeting in Dakar in 2010 G-WADI Workshop April 2010 Dakar, Senegal 35 participants from 12 countries
G-WADI-SSA : Outputs from consultative meeting Build on the existing expertise and know how (involvement of three sub-regional centres (AGRHYMET, ICPAC, SADC-DMC) Stakeholder mapping to identify key stakeholders and their intervention areas within arid and semi-arid zones in SSA Work in synergy with the other UNESCO-IHP networks in SSA such as FRIEND, ISARM, GRAPHIC and the network of HELP basins. After extensive discussions on the relevance of the G-WADI network in Sub-Saharan Africa, the participants agreed to formally establish a G- WADI network in Sub-Saharan Africa.
G-WADI-SSA: outputs from the consultative meeting: key topics Water augmentation techniques including rain water harvesting and aquifer recharge Soil-water management techniques Monitoring tools including early warning and drought monitor and flood Experimental basins and modeling Data, particularly rainfall data
Formal creation of G-WADI Sub Saharan Africa Paris - 9th December 2010 in a meeting at UNESCO headquarter An expert group is suggested (composed of, but not limited to, ICPAC, AGRHYMET, SADC, UCAD and UNESCO, and is chaired by Prof. Cheikh Gaye from the university of Dakar The Secretariat is hosted by AGRHYMET (AGRrométéorologie, HYdrologie, METéorologie) Regional Center, Niamey, Niger
Achievements: Transfer and validation of a drought and flood monitoring tool in West and East Africa One of the main achievement of G- WADI Sub-Sahara African is the transfer, validation and use of the AFDM Collaboration between UNESCO PRINCETON UNIVERSITY and Regional Centers
Soil moisture Daily rainfall Daily discharge Evapotranspiration Radiation Validations with At the Nigerian hydrological service Senegal River basin At the Volta- HYCOS At the Mali water resource service. AGRHYMET The system is used operationally by AGRHYMET on 10-day basis By the Nigerian hydrological service (NISHA) weekly report
G-WADI Capacity building on the AFDM in West-Africa
Training in East-Africa (ICPAC), on DM 10
Validation: dry and wet years
