2 M. Tech. Nanotechnology Nanotechnology courses offer knowledge and training on the development and modification of devices with atomic precision where the dimension of the systems is less than 100 nanometers. It is an interdisciplinary subject that integrates the study of Bioinformatics Biotechnology, Physics, Chemistry as well as other disciplines. There is a huge demand for students who have done Nanotechnology Courses in a good number of industries and laboratories in India and abroad. The scope and application of nanotechnology is wide ranging and therefore many institutes are now introducing degree courses in this field at the graduate and post graduate level. Being an interdisciplinary subject, students with a degree in Nanotechnology can find employment opportunities in a number of fields. The areas where a nano-technologist can seek employment include electronics, chemical, agriculture, food and beverage, genetics, biotechnology, Space research, forensic science, environment industry and medicine. Prof. M. Husain, Hony. Director, Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology The most important feature in the field of Nanotechnology that has attracted worldwide researchers is the discovery of Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs). Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) are currently very attractive materials for a diverse range of applications because of their extraordinary mechanical and electrical properties. Their applications have already been demonstrated in field emission displays, nanoscale electronic devices, biosensors and hydrogen storage mediums. The proposed applications of CNTs are in micro-electronics/semiconductors, conducting composites, controlled drug delivery/release, artificial muscles, batteries, field effect transistors, nano-lithography, nanoelectronics, data storage, magnetic nanotube, molecular quantum wires, photovoltaic, electromagnetic shielding, cancer treatment, thermal protection, nanotube reinforced composites, AFM tip, super capacitor, catalysts support for fuel cells, polymer composites and sensors. At the nanoscale the surface to volume ratio becomes very large which radically change the physical and chemical properties of the system. Relevance of this course in Jamia Keeping in view of the importance of Nanotechnology and the infrastructure available in Jamia, the Department of Physics started a two-year M. Tech Nanotechnology course in 2007 with an initial intake of 15 students, which has been enhanced to 20 students with effect from the academic year This innovative Masters level course is designed so as to produce highly knowledgeable and specially trained post graduates in fast developing area of nanotechnology which is already making major economic contributions, impacting on products ranging from satellite TV, biomedical implants, structural and highend avionics to sunscreens and even car dashboards. The course would equip the students with the special experimental skills to make a successful career in the new emerging industries where reduced dimensionality plays a critical role in their products. It is designed as a series of lecture modules covering the technologies used to design, realize and analyze nanoscale devices, materials and systems, coupled with the general and technology
3 management. Apart from the lecture modules, the course is designed to provide hands on training by way of experiments through the specially procured nano fabrication equipments commissioned in the Nanotechnology laboratory. The students are also given exposure to the latest process design and development technologies through project work, undertaken on both group and individual basis and conducted in close collaboration with industries. The Material Science Laboratory of the Department of Physics, Jamia Millia Islamia during the last decade has been focusing its research activity mainly in the area of Nano-materials and Devices with close collaboration with national laboratories of the country, which has resulted in to the creation of the Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. The Centre will continue to have significant collaboration with the National Laboratories like SSPL (DRDO), LASTEC, NPL, DIT, IUAC and other CSIR laboratories apart from Academic Institutions like IIT-Delhi, Delhi University (South Campus), IIT-Roorkee, IIT-Kanpur. This academia national laboratory interaction and exposure ensures that this M Tech course in Nanotechnology combines the necessary scientific rigour with industrial relevance.
