2 Our House Diversion Dam Page 2 of 5 Item 2: GREAT GREY OWL PROTECTION MEASURES PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 RELATED DOCUMENTS: A. The general provisions of the Contract, including the Owner s Terms and Conditions and all other Exhibits, apply to the Work specified in this Section of these Specifications RELATED REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE: A. Summary of Work: Section B. Sediment Excavation and Stockpiling: Section DESCRIPTION OF WORK A. Great grey owls are known to be active and forage along a segment of Ridge Road. In order to reduce the potential for collisions between owls and haul vehicles, a temporary barrier shall be installed prior to the start of hauling along the downslope edge of Ridge Road as specified herein. B. The barrier shall be installed at a hair-pin turn located approximately 2.4 miles (as measured along Ridge Road) east of the intersection of Ridge Road and State Route 49 (see Figure 1 below). The barrier is to start at the intersection of Ridge Road and a Forest Service Road (Point A on Figure 1) and follow the road around the curve to Point B for a total approximate length of 800 feet.

There are no quality control requirements of the Contractor other than to maintain the barrier throughout the period of sediment hauling as specified herein. B. Required documentation by the Contractor will include notification of YCWA of any and all owl sightings during the course of the work as specified herein SUBMITTALS A. The Contractor shall submit a list of materials that will be used in the barrier construction. B. The Contractor shall also include the installation and removal of the barrier relative to the start and end date of sediment hauling in the Schedule required in Section 5.29 of the General Conditions. PART 2 - PRODUCTS The barrier material shall be orange polypropylene safety fencing (Cordova Safety Products SF1201 or approved equal) a minimum of 4 feet in height (but installed to create barrier with a minimum height as specified in Paragraph 3.0x of this specification section The barrier posts shall be 1.5 inch by 1.5 inch steel fence T-posts (HDX Heavy Duty Steel Green Painted T-Post, or approved equal) a minimum of 7 feet in height).
4 Our House Diversion Dam Page 4 of The perching deterrents shall be a segment of #3 reinforcing steel, a minimum of 18 inches in length, affixed to the top end of the barrier post as specified herein Miscellaneous items to complete the barrier include ties or clips to affix the barrier material and the perching deterrents to the posts and are up to the Contractor s discretion to determine the appropriate materials to successfully construct and deliver the intent of these protection measures over the course of the hauling operations with maintenance to be provided by the Contractor. PART 3 - EXECUTION The barrier shall be installed at the location described in Paragraph 1.03.B of this specification section The barrier shall be installed a minimum of 4 feet, measured horizontally, from the edge of the existing pavement, or, where it occurs, immediately behind (downslope side) of the existing guardrail system Posts shall be installed vertically a maximum of 8 feet apart, measured horizontally The barrier material shall be installed on the posts such that the top of the barrier material is a minimum of 6 feet above the ground surface and that the bottom is a minimum of 18 inches above the ground surface, both measured vertically Perch deterrents shall be installed vertically at the top of each barrier post such that the top of the deterrent extends a minimum of 6 inches, vertically, above the top of the post The Contractor shall complete erection of the barrier a minimum of 24 hours prior to the start of sediment hauling operations and maintain its effectiveness throughout the course of hauling operations The Contractor, and its employees and sub-contractors, shall be informed of the presence of Great Grey Owls by YCWA, including issuance of identification cards All sightings by the Contractor, and its employees and sub-contractors, shall be reported as soon as possible but no later than the end of shift to YCWA, or its representatives, on the project site who, in turn, shall report said sightings to the Tahoe National Forest and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. PART 4 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT The cost of the Great Owl Protection Measures specified herein shall be included in the unit price stated in the BID SCHEDULE for the item listed as follows: Item No. 3 Sediment Excavation and Stockpiling. No additional payment will be made.
