2 Minister s Greeting On behalf of the Government of Ontario, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2014 FONOM/MMAH Northeastern Municipal Conference. The ministry is pleased to partner with the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities and the City of Sault Ste. Marie to bring you this year s conference. In keeping with the conference theme, Northern by Nature, this is an opportunity to share perspectives on the specific needs of northern Ontario while highlighting the importance of the provincialmunicipal relationship. As a former municipal councillor from northern Ontario, I have seen first-hand how collaboration between different levels of government can help build prosperous communities. Strong relationships and open communication are the foundation for creating strong and sustainable communities. As the newly appointed Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, I am committed to working with all of you. 3 President s Message On behalf of the Board of Directors of FONOM, it is a pleasure to welcome delegates, sponsors and exhibitors to our 54 th Annual Conference that is being held in Sault Ste. Marie. The theme of this year s conference is Northern by Nature. In conjunction with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and the City of Sault Ste. Marie, delegates will benefit from a wide variety of speakers and informative sessions focused on strategies to build long-term sustainable communities. This year s conference will deliver current and relevant information to municipalities, enhance the ability to be strong and effective community leaders and provide an opportunity for delegates to network, share ideas of best practices and discuss future development objectives. We encourage you all to visit our exhibitors and sponsors because without their support, this conference would not be possible. We thank them for their interest in our conference and their commitment to northern Ontario through their presence here this week. We also want to sincerely thank the City of Sault Ste.
