2 CIRCULAR ECONOMY. THE ULTIMATUM OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. Given the present state of economic development, resource scarcity and security are two important topics discussed with heightening intensity in the sustainable development arena worldwide. In light of that, efficiency and sufficiency measures of water, energy and other vital resources in particular are viewed as necessary first steps towards a sustainable future in both developed and developing economies. Energy resources being one of the most complex issues in an economy, it is understood that solving for sustainable energy supplies resolve a raft of other interlinked resource issues that breaks the inertia of sustainable development and set the economic development on a sustainable trajectory. Evident from one of the greenest and resource efficient economies in the world; the German economy, renewable energy development coupled with material and energy recovery from formally branded waste streams such as municipal/industrial waste and waste water have played a pivotal role in the sustainable growth of the German industrial and manufacturing sectors while relieving the nation from the burden of greenhouse gas emissions. The challenges of our time provide great opportunities to change, innovate, and achieve growth sustainably by employing appropriate technologies and management concepts, such as Material Flow Management, ultimately leading to Circular Economies. A Circular Economy is characterized by regional cross-sectorial networks, regional development strategies sustained by renewable energy solutions, and value-adding policies providing the backbone of sustainable societies of the future. The annual International Circular Economy Week, having Creating Value as its central theme, aims to bring together like-minded professionals, academia and businesses from all over the world to one unique place on earth the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld for weeklong activities to showcase, demonstrate and share knowledge on the latest advancements in the application of Circular Economy concept, the practical means of tackling global economic and technological challenges of energy transition policies towards 100% renewable energy systems, and sustainable resource management (including water, sanitation and waste management strategies) paying special attention to the sustainable business aspect of the initiatives. In a nutshell, this program is about facing the resource challenge of our time and create the future we want... Prof. Dr. Peter Heck Managing Director - IfaS CIRCULAR ECONOMY. A PRIMER. In general terms, CE describes an industrial economy (although not limited to), by design, which is characterized by two flows. They are the biological nutrient flow and the technical nutrient flow. Biological nutrients are designed to reenter the biosphere safely whilst the technical nutrients are designed to circulate in the technosphere at high quality without entering the biosphere [1]. This model is broadly based on the sustainable thinking of resource utilization, environmental protection, technology paradigm, and economic growth. CE aims at increasing the efficiency of resource utilization and improving (if not preserving) the environmental quality in keeping with the ecological and economic principles. Thus, reduce, reuse and recycle form the basic principles of the CE concept and its strategies. Closed material loops are a key characteristic in CE where waste from one process is used as raw material for another in an interconnected system. In doing so, CE emphasizes on the maximum amount of material and energy recovery to increase the resource efficiency in any given system. Furthermore, it synergizes with the concepts of cleaner production, eco-design, and sustainable consumption and production in a broader perspective [2]

3 PROGRAM: 7 th INTERNATIONAL CIRCULAR ECONOMY WEEK Focus of the 7th International Circular Economy Week (7ICEW) will be Zero Emission strategies and technologies towards Circular Economy. Thematic technology site visits throughout the week, speeches and presentations at the 7th International Circular Economy Conference (7ICEC) will cover the topics on energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies, water and waste water management, waste management, sustainable soil and agricultural management. These events are highly recommended for practitioners, policy makers, academics/researchers in the relevant domains. We will you an invoice including the bank account details for the payment of participation fee. Do kindly notify the conference secretariat, by , once the transaction has been completed. Upon the reception of the full payment by the registration deadline: 25th August 2016, we shall send you a personalized invitation letter, should you require one for the purpose of procuring a visa. No registration will be processed unless the full payment of the participation fee is completed by the registration deadline. CANCELLATION OF REGESTRATION POLICY Registration cancellations must be made in writing. Cancellation notices should be sent via fax to +49 (0) or via to ICEW2016@umwelt-campus.de. Cancellation requests received on or before September 25, 2016, will be refunded in full, less a EUR administrative fee. Cancellation requests received between September 26, 2016 and October 01, 2016, will be refunded at 50% of the participation fee. Refunds will not be made for cancellations after October 02, 2016, or for participants who register but do not attend. No exceptions to this policy can be considered as funds will then be fully committed to the production of the conference.
