10 BRINGING COMPETENCES TO THE NUCLEAR SECTOR The UK Nuclear Landscape 37 Nuclear Sites - UK FACT The UK has only 15 operating reactors across 8 sites with a generation capacity totalling 9.5 GWe. France has 58 generating 63.2 GWe 21% of its electricity but almost half of this capacity is to be retired by France produces 75% of electricity from Nuclear The country has full fuel cycle facilities including major reprocessing plants. EDF Energy spends about 600 million per year on upgrades to the eight plants (15 reactors) to enable ongoing operation In 2012 the UK government passed a house of commons bill to increase the UK nuclear capacity The government aims to have 16 GWe of new nuclear capacity operating by

18 BRINGING COMPETENCES TO THE NUCLEAR SECTOR Magnox Fuel Retrieval & Export Facility Scope of work: 10m Design proposals, detail design, substantiation of mechanical handling plant and equipment, associated control systems, building services, fire alarm systems - for the retrieval and export of Magnox fuel skips stored under water within the First Generation Magnox Storage Pond. The equipment comprises: Skip bogie system, Skip hoist system, Flask filling and emptying equipment Flask de-lidding/ lidding station, Flask bogie system, Flask wash system Antechamber doors, Shield doors, Mechanised access systems, Lifting equipment Complete drive and control system, Fire Alarm system, Lighting and emergency lighting system, Communications system, CCTV system Safety systems, Power distribution, Access control system 18
19 BRINGING COMPETENCES TO THE NUCLEAR SECTOR Sellafield Product and Residue Store (SPRS) Scope of work: Assystem were contracted to design an encapsulation flask to contain product cans which may have become contaminated or pressurised during storage. The vessel must be designed as a pressure vessel whilst simultaneously being able to stop leakage during drop (impact) events.. The design brief was simply load cases and a design space, both internal and external. The Assystem design and analysis team produced 8 fully analysed iterations, each one tested using FEA for compatibility with pressure vessels as well as leakage during impact. The design and movement of the seals proved to be a key aspect in the design process: Civil Nuclear Advanced Analysis Mechanical Design Impact design / analysis Pressure Vessel Optioneering Robustness studies Safety / Risk PD5500 FEA (RADIOSS, DYNA) 19
20 BRINGING COMPETENCES TO THE NUCLEAR SECTOR Defence: Working in Partnership Rolls-Royce Engineering Resource Alliance Partnership with Rolls Royce Best Athlete principles 50m per annum 3 year duration Providing continuity of resources postcontract A partnership of 4 companies, trusted to provide Rolls-Royce with the most cost-effective, intelligent solution to multidisciplined projects. Assystem remain uniquely the only partner approved by Rolls- Royce for sub-tier work delegation and approval. 20
21 BRINGING COMPETENCES TO THE NUCLEAR SECTOR Test Rigs Programme Rolls-Royce Assystem were contracted to design a suite of test rigs which are used in the testing of naval nuclear propulsion components. The rigs were manufactured from stainless steel and deliver hot and pressurised demin/de-ox water to the test components. Assystem provided engineering services, including mechanical design, substantiation, EC&I and safety from concept design phase to installation and commissioning. The CAE department was responsible for conducting a range of assessments, including:- Thermodynamic calculation to inform heat and cooler selection and manufacture Flow analysis to determine pump and valve requirements Pipe stress analysis to ensure code compliance against pressure temperature and thermal expansion Civil assessments of both the concrete floor and pipe support structures. Naval Nuclear Fluid Systems Civil Structural Mechanical Design Safety / Risk Piping systems Pressure Vessel Flow analysis Pipe stress ASME B31.3 CAESARII Fluid Flow STAAD Pro 21

Elastic and limit load analysis was undertaken. Assystem also performed FE analysis on the ITER beam line vessel and beam source vessels, to substantiate the design to RCC-MR. Additional consideration of the vacuum effect on a square section was required. A seismic assessment was also conducted. ITER Vacuum Vessel Assessment ITER Neutron Beam Vessel Assessment 28
29 BRINGING COMPETENCES TO THE NUCLEAR SECTOR Tokomak FEA Applications Outboard First Wall Optimisation Nuclear Fusion Advanced Analysis Fluid Systems CFD Flow analysis Thermal analysis Stress analysis Optimisation Assystem Sunderland provided thermo-hydraulic and thermo-mechanical analysis and optimisation of an outboard first wall panel for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). The first phase of the project involved initial optimisation of the cooling system based on scoping calculations, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of the cooling system to test the modifications, detailed Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of a section of the component, and further recommendations from optimisation based on the results of these activities. For the second phase of the project a revised model was supplied by the client, incorporating Assystem recommendations. Assystem performed Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) analysis and FEA to verify the integrity of the optimised Outboard First Wall assembly. 29
