5 This project has received funding from the European Union s Horizon 22 research and innovation programme H&C energy by energy carriers Italy accounts for of the EU28 s total delivered H&C demand. Compared to the EU28, it uses more gas and electricity, but less oil, coal and district. 8% 1% % % Gas Oil 4% Biomass Electricity District Coal 6% 4% 5% 1% 1% % 9% 42% Others (fossil) Heat pumps Solar thermal Others (RES) 6% 1% 52% Italy H&C (735 TWh) 15% EU28 H&C (6352 TWh) Sectors by purposes and energy carriers Italian industries are overwhelmingly dominated by process, other sectors by space. Italian industry, residential and service sectors use a varied mix of fuels. 6 This project has received funding from the European Union s Horizon 22 research and innovation programme Industry sub-sectors by H&C purposes Italy s industry is dominated by higher temperature processes. Most of this is used for the metals industry, (petro-)chemicals and nonmetallic minerals. Space and lower temperature process are also substantial and used in most sectors. 2% 2% 1% 1% 1% 14% 46% Process >5 C Space Process 1-2 C Process <1 C Process 2-5 C Process cooling -15 C Process cooling <-3 C Process cooling-3- C Italian industry (247 TWh) Industry sub-sectors by energy carriers To attain the high temperatures, Italy s industry relies mostly on fossil fuels, mainly gas and coal.
