3 Why China China the world s fastest growing wind energy market A booming market in China can be predicted due to the enactment of the nation s renewable energy law on Jan.1, 2006 and 11th Five-Year-Plan which attaches greater importance on wind energy. It is estimated that China possesses 1,000 GW reserve of exploitable wind energy (250 GW on land 750 GW off shore). China has become the world s fastest growing wind-energy market with an average growth rate of 56% for the past 7 years. At the end of 2008, China s installed capacity was above 10 GW, ranking the fourth in the world. According to the Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association (CREIA), the capacity is expected to reach 100 GW by In particular, China nowadays needs badly the import of advanced technology, products and services to improve the sound development of the industry. National Energy Administration has considered removing the restric- tion of 70% domestic-built wind turbines for China s market. As a result, international key players such as Vestas and Siemens have expanded their investment in China market. Therefore, it is high time for well- qualified foreign enterpr ises to step into the boosting market. Offshore: large scale projects gears up China is regarded as one of the richest countries in offshore wind resources, whose mainland coastline is about 18,000 kilometers the fourth longest coastline in the world. At 10 meters height, the offshore wind resource is estimated to be 750 million KW, among which 100 million KW is in the 10 meter depth waters. With the nation s 40% population, the coastal area is the most developed area in China and also the largest consuming market for electricity. The first Chinese offshore wind farm in Shanghai went online in 2009 as a demonstration project, followed by further ambitious plans to build more offshore wind farms in the costal provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong and Shandong. It is estimated that Jiangsu province will establish the offshore wind farm with the total capacity of 7GW and Zhejiang province of 2.7 GW by the year of The development of offshore wind power has a huge potential in China.
