Key responsibilities and accountabilities Leading software engineering teams in the design and development of high-performance software systems and consumer facing products Recruit, mentor, coach and manage staff, ensuring the quality of their work and professional development. Provide technical leadership and direction to peers and colleagues Accountable for ensuring the software is properly monitored, supported and maintained, including maintaining resources and skills for resolving issues throughout the lifecycle Working with other technical leaders in the broader organisation to define and implement the operating environment Working with other technical leaders in the broader organisation to define, document and distribute best practice and standards Work with the project management team to ensure teams operate effective development and delivery processes that support the timely delivery of their roadmaps Own contracts with vendors, negotiate and influence to hold them accountable for the terms of the agreement Maintain knowledge of industry and competitor developments Lead the team to have an effective vision, strategy and business case that supports their product and wider divisional and BBC strategies Clearly communicate the product strategy, plans, objectives and performance measures, progress against plans and budget to all interested and invested parties tailoring communication as appropriate to ensure relevance to the audience Knowledge, skills, training and experience Essential Significant experience in management of software engineering teams, including recruitment, mentoring and development, deal with multiple priorities, manage conflict and influence to ensure that projects / assignments are properly commissioned and delivered into the business Extensive knowledge of designing and writing robust software for large scale applications in a fast changing environment with rapid release cycles Expertise in developing for operational concerns (monitoring integration, performance testing, security considerations) Knowledge of development processes, including agile Expertise in test driven development Leadership experience of project working and professional software Expertise in translating product requirements into technical solutions Page 1 of 5
2 Experience of choosing and applying design patterns Significant experience of representing the company at working groups, speaking at conferences or publishing well respected articles, books or blogs Able to deliver to deadlines and demonstrate resilience to ensure the correct technical solution is selected with a full understanding of the costs, timescales and risk involved Well-developed influencing skills and ability to communicate complex technology solutions in a clear and coherent way Technical Knowledge & Experience: An ability to lead discussion, direction and support team members in decisions relating to: Mainstream development and deployment tool chains. (IDE, SCCS, CI) Web architecture and key technologies (HTTP, DNS, distributed design) Database design and use in software applications Multiple mainstream development frameworks Open source practices and licenses Desirable: Computer Science Degree Job impact Decision making Reports to Head of Product or Head of Software Engineering (or equivalent) Lead software engineering teams in the design and development of software. Ensuring products are monitored, supported and maintained throughout the product lifecycle Negotiates contracts with 3rd party providers, dealing with issues and ensuring that deliverables are realised within agreed terms The role holder will be expected to prioritise deliverables and balance resources to meet multiple objectives in a fast changing environment Decisions or actions have a substantial impact on the direction and/or achievement of departmental objectives because they determine success or failure and timeliness of audience experiences from that department Scope Finance: Typically between 250k to 2m It will be expected that the post holder of will have a good understanding and oversight of the finances associated with their assigned teams and deliverables including regular monthly forecasting, actuals and general performance reporting. The post holder is responsible for maintaining staff levels to budget, cloud infrastructure to budget and forecast and actual spend against supplier contracts. Page 2 of 5
3 Line Management: The role will lead and manage their resources (either permanent or project based) as appropriate, with responsibility for staff performance management and communication and the performance and success of the software they build. Division Reports to (title) Location base Design & Engineering Content Production Workflows Head of Data Solutions London Organisation structure Data Solutions a cross-functional team of engineers, data scientists and product managers that is leading the efforts to improve the BBC s content production workflows with data. We are part of the BBC s new Content, Production and Workflow division and work alongside teams responsible for all of the BBC s production systems. We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced manager to lead our teams of software engineers. The ideal candidate will be an experienced team leader with a background in software engineering and agile project delivery. But first and foremost we are looking for a people person, not a tech guru. You will have proactively decided to move from engineering into team management, because you love building amazing, resilient engineering teams that deliver ground-breaking, data driven, large scale applications. We mainly code in modern JavaScript (client and server) and Python. Familiarity with these programming languages would be an advantage, as would a grasp of fundamentals of machine learning and experience of collaborating with Data Scientists on software design and implementation. Additional job specific responsibilities and accountabilities Line management of senior engineers in the Data Solutions team, working with them with defining measurable objectives, personal development plans and helping them manage their teams as required. Specific duties would include: team building and development, including recruitment, coaching and weekly catchups with your direct reports and your manager being very present in the team, making the team your priority, proactively looking to the future - has the team got what it needs to grow? setting OKRs for the engineers and reviewing them on a regular basis, including getting 360 feedback for peers and stakeholders outreach activities to help with recruitment and promotion - coordinating blogging, conference speaking and attendance at recruitment fairs Page 4 of 5
