Division Reports to (title) Location base WS Languages Planning Editor London W1A Organisation structure WS Languages is a key provider of content for the BBC s news operation delivering content 41 languages across all platforms for both UK and international audiences. The central Planning team produces high impact content. It works with language services to bring their most engaging stories to the BBC s 320 million global audiences. The team also helps Languages have access to high quality content produced by other parts of the BBC to ensure efficiency and compliance. The Planning team is looking for a News Assistant Editor to help lead the delivery of innovative original journalism and production, for TV and Radio, but in particular for digital. All candidates will be expected to demonstrate a clear understanding of our remit to provide outstanding journalism to our global audience. You will need a detailed understanding of WS Languages and the key stakeholders and be familiar with W2020 developments as well as the future strategy of BBC News. The overall purpose of this role is: To support the Planning Editor across a range of editorial and management responsibilities. To help deliver strategic and management decisions to the Planning, Innovations and 100 Women team. To support the leadership in Planning & Deployments team and Central Services department to achieve its goals. To build and sustain close relationships with colleagues across World Service as well as with Newsgathering, Business, Sport and Languages and other relevant teams across the BBC. To adequately deploy journalists and field producers when needed to meet the demands of breaking and developing news, ensuring the editorial interests of the BBC World Service Languages department and those of the wider BBC News. Additional job specific responsibilities and accountabilities Additional responsibilities include: - Manage the flow of built material from services to the wider language services as well as global and domestic output. - Manage co-commissions with bilinguals for news and feature material and joint team deployments with Newsgathering, by closely liaising with the Hub Planning Editor and Page 3 of 5

4 TVU/DigiHub to ensure smooth roll-out - You will originate and deliver high impact journalism from the language services to BBC News outlets. - You will direct and deploy the senior field producers when necessary to support language services ambitions - Briefing the Languages WDEs on managing the offers from the various language services to the wider BBC, ensuring content from concept to delivery. - Negotiate and shape multimedia content from all Language services - BAU as well as new W2020 languages. - You will play a key role in encouraging the creation of original journalism and innovative treatments in line with changing audience needs. - Following up with senior editorial staff to clarify news priorities - Liaise and direct where appropriate, the TVU and DigiHub to ensure coverage of key stories for languages - You should help develop the next day planning responsibilities, refresh and commission language-originated multimedia material for big ongoing news stories. - You will be required to chair (as and when needed) and attend daily, weekly and monthly meetings and represent World Service Languages at a wide BBC News level. Additional Required Skills/Knowledge 1. Substantial experience of live and developing journalism, with appropriate production experience and proven editorial judgement. 2. A deep understanding of what the Central Services can do to support language services and to bring the best of services to English-speaking audiences. 3. An excellent knowledge of BBC editorial policy and practice, and an appetite for creative solutions. 4. Demonstrable experience in managing, directing and motivating staff, including in challenging and high pressured environments. 5. Experience in the logistics of deployment such as in high risk environments: risk assessments, budget management and staff safety.
